LINCOLN USA – A legislator who filed a lawsuit against God has received something he may not have expected: a response from the deity, according to an AP report.
According to John Friend, clerk of the Douglas County District Court in Omaha, “God” filed a response to a suit brought against him last week By Democrat State Senator Ernie Chambers.
Chambers sought a permanent injunction against the Almighty for making terroristic threats, inspiring fear and causing “widespread death, destruction and terrorization of millions upon millions of the Earth’s inhabitants.”
Referring to “God’s” response, John Friend said:
It miraculously appeared on the counter. It just all of a sudden was here – poof!
Chambers, a self-proclaimed agnostic who often criticizes Christians, said his filing was triggered by a federal lawsuit he considered frivolous. He said he was trying to makes the point that anybody can sue anybody.
Not so, says “God”. His response argues that the defendant is immune from some earthly laws and the court lacks jurisdiction.
Playing the slippery eel, “God” – in his defence – adds that blaming him for human oppression and suffering misses an important point:
I created man and woman with free will and next to the promise of immortal life, free will is My greatest gift to you.
There was no contact information on the filing, although St Michael the Archangel is listed as a witness, Friend said.
Chambers is distinctive … and does not attempt to blend in. He wears sweatshirts and jeans amid a forest of suits and ties; his gray beard contrasts with the clean chins of most of his brethren. He’s been described as “left of San Francisco” in a state that for decades has been tightly tucked under the blanket of conservative Republicanism. And, also, he’s black, the lone African American in the Legislature.
