TWO Muslim clerics have hit the headlines this week with daft, hate-laden pronouncements.bakri-muhammad.jpg

Omar Bakri Mohammad – who left the UK to live in self-imposed exile in Lebanon – hit out at British featherweight champion boxer Amir Khan for wearing flag-embellished shorts and draping himself in the Union Flag; and Indonesian cleric, Abu Bakar Bashir, called tourists visiting Bali “worms, snakes, maggots”, and encouraged his followers to beat up Western visitors.

Mohammad, 49, a founder of the banned al-Muhajiroun organisation, called the 21-year-old boxing champion “jahil” (ignorant) and a “deviant person” for wearing the Union flag, and added:

I don’t think somebody should really look to Amir Khan as a good example for the youth – He wears shorts with the Union Jack. That is a sin. He should not be wearing the flag because sovereignty is for God. His only allegiance should be to the Prophet Mohammed. The ideal situation would be to have a Muslim team not registered to any state so he can represent the Islamic community.

amir_khan_2.jpgHazel Blears, the Communities Secretary, in an interview with the Scotsman, accused Mr Bakri of expressing “hate-fuelled nonsense”. She added:

Amir is a credit to this country and exactly the kind of role model our young people need. Like many people in this country, he is both proud to be British and proud to be a Muslim and his achievements are an inspiration to all.

In addition to inciting hatred against Western tourists, Abu Bakar Bashir, who was convicted of conspiracy over the 2002 Bali bombings that killed 202 people, including 88 Australians, but was later cleared and released from prison, encouraged young Muslims to die as martyrs.

The youth movement here must aspire to a martyrdom death. The young must be first at the front line – don’t hide at the back. You must be at the front, die as martyrs and all your sins will be forgiven. This is how to achieve forgiveness.
