THE good folk of Northern Ireland, who have had more than their fair share of Christian bigotry over the years, have just been treated a dose of full-on religious lunacy from Stephen “Birdshit” Green, of Christian Voice.
The irrepressible pipsqueak today concluded five “Christian meetings” in the province, where he exhorted people to “lift up your voice like a trumpet” and imparted the message that:
These are new and demanding times for Northern Ireland. The old certainties, it seems to me, are changing, and Christians need to be aware where the new threats are coming from. Who would have thought, for instance, that the first civil partnership would be registered in Northern Ireland, or that Ulster’s primary school children would be the first in the UK to have their innocence destroyed through mandatory sex education? There are moves afoot to impose the horrors of legal abortion on the Province. Will the Church have the conviction to stand against that?
No-one seems to have reported on Green’s visit, but, given that the “old certainties” produced a sectarian-ridden, deeply dysfunctional society infamous for its terrorism and religious hatred, we guess that Green was given the bum’s rush by everyone except a handful delusional loons – like the swivel-eyed Iris Robinson.
Green says on the CV website:
I have a vision of a society where God’s law is preferred to secular ideas, and where there is peace and tranquillity. In such a society, individuals have responsibilities, married couples stay married, they bring up Godly children, perversion is not paraded through the streets, the State wields the sword of true justice, and God’s blessing is poured out.
Novelist Ira Levin had a similar vision in the early 70s, and translated it into a horror classic called The Stepford Wives.

Yes, but will that get IRA drug dealers off the streets?

He reminds me of Fred Phelps- that idiot in the USA who pickets soldier’s funerals – just as mad and just as obnoxious – he should be ignored- actively

Some chutzpah – visit the scene of sectarian hate and explain why religion is good for society. For his next trick he could visit Belsen and slag off the Jews.

If he ‘d been more clued up or honest he could have said ‘Who would have thought, for instance, that civil partnerships still cannot be registered in some towns in Northern Ireland due to members of ’swivel eye’ Robinson’s party running the Town Hall, or that Belfast primary school children would be the first in the UK to need a military escort to get to school because parents of the ‘other’ Christian community think they should use a door in the next street?’

Reading between the lines, he is just desperate beyond words to prove to critics that he can become a force to be reckoned with, having failed to garner a following in England and Wales after many years of fame-seeking.

“…a society where God’s law is preferred to secular ideas, and where there is peace and tranquillity…”
Aren’t those mutually exclusive ideas?

With refernce to Roger’s comment, I exchanged some emails with Stephen Green a couple of years ago after he invited me (by some ghastly mistake) to attend one of his protests.
I asked him about his degree from Cambridge University, but the final answer was that it was none of my business and that further emails from me would be directed to the junk folder.
Thus it was amusing to receive an email last July seeking a donation to help him avoid possible bankruptcy. I haven’t replied so far, but, err… the power of prayer ??
