AT the weekend, we learn today, 430 people  – wow, as many as that? – spent 48 hours beseeching the Almighty to put another evangelical basket case in the White House.

Credit crunch? What credit crunch, you penniless suckers?

But that pales in comparison to the $150,000 spent by the Republican National Committee on tarting up Sarah Palin and her family to make them more appealing to US voters.

According to Politico, RNC financial disclosures show that Palin’s excessive accessorising began in early September, and included bills from Saks Fifth Avenue in St Louis and New York for a combined $49,425.74.

The records also document a couple of big-time shopping trips to Neiman Marcus in Minneapolis, including one $75,062.63 spree in early September.

The RNC also spent $4,716.49 on hair and makeup in September

Politico’s scoop, quickly seized upon by the mainstream media, stung the RNC’s spokeswoman Tracey Schmitt into making this defensive statement:

With all of the important issues facing the country right now, it’s remarkable that we’re spending time talking about pantsuits and blouses It was always the intent that the clothing go to a charitable purpose after the campaign.

Seven-year-old Piper Palin carries a Louis Vuitton bag on 9/11. Will she have to surrender it to charity after the election?

If $2,500 Valentino jackets don’t do for Palin, then surely God must.

According to this report, Palin – in a slick belt-and-braces manoeuvre – is also putting the outcome of the November 4 election “in God’s hands.”

Questioned by America’s bigot-in-chief James Dobson on his national radio programme about opinion polls that suggest the Republican ticket is trailing, John McCain’s running mate said she was “not discouraged at all.”

“It motivates us, makes us work that much harder,” the Alaska governor told Dobson, head of Focus on the Family, a homo-hating outfit popular among Christian conservatives in the United States.

She added, in a bit of sentence-mangling that would have made Dubya proud:

I’m going to know, at the end of the day, putting this in God’s hands, that the right thing for America will be done.

When Dobson told Palin that 430 people had prayed for her throughout the weekend, she replied:

It is that intercession that is so needed and so appreciated. I can feel the power of the prayer.

Check out how Palin has been transformed by the miracle of haut couture in this slide show over at The Huffington Post.
