Atifa Bibi, 14, the victim of an acid attack
IS MISOGYNY so deeply imbedded in the Religion of Peace that teenage Muslim girls seeking an education should be punished by having acid thrown in their faces?
The horrifying burns on the face of Atifa Bibi, 14, are the result of an attack in Afghanistan yesterday when her assailants – two men on motorbikes – removed her headscarf and poured acid on her face. Her sister Shamia, 16, suffered similar injuries.
According to this report, it is not yet known if any damage was done to their sight in the attack, but both girls could be scarred for life.
The motive for the attack outside their Kandahar school is unknown, but it is assumed that the attackers were motivated by the Taliban’s belief that girls should not attend school.
Before they were overthrown in Afghanistan, the Taliban – under their strict interpretation of Islam – had banned girls from receiving education.
Four other girls walking to school with them at the time managed to escape with lighter injuries and have already been released from hospital.

I’m sure there’ll be a long list of people – not all Muslims – making excuses for religion on the grounds that this is an abberation. But it’s not. It’s an extreme example of the misogyny that all major faiths uphold. Until religious apologists face up to this obvious political and historical truth they’re not worthy of respect.

Religious zealots can’t allow girls an education in case they grow up and become reasonable, tolerant people, instead of malleable baby factories and punch-bags.
The men who committed this revolting act need a well placed bullet in brain.
