IF the world is as violent and irrational a place as ever in 2009, it might possible be because the sexually exuberant Raëlians were denied the opportunity to hold a mass orgy for world peace in Israel just before Christmas.

The plan was to hold World Orgasm Day on the winter solstice. But the event, due to take place in Tel Aviv, was cancelled after organisers received “multiple threats”, according to Haaretz.
Raëlian spokesperson in Israel, Kobi Drori, said that the orgy would welcome people of all orientations, so long as participants were over 18.
The orgy was intended to:
Try to bring world peace through mass orgasm, this by experiencing consensual sex and natural, uninterrupted pleasure.
It was to be the first of several events planned to take place in Tel Aviv. In January, a conference on sexuality and masturbation will feature experts and writers in the field.
Drori said the group will not be deterred by this setback.
We wanted to put into practice the saying ‘make love, not war’. Several years ago an Iraqi boy whose limbs were amputated was shown on TV and everybody treated this as if it was okay, but when Janet Jackson exposed her breast during the Superbowl the American nation was appalled.
The Raëlians – members of a cult started by a Frenchman called Raël (formerly Claude Vorilhon) – are known for their liberal attitudes towards sexuality.
They believe that mankind was created by a master race of aliens who arrived here thousands of years ago in UFOs.
Despite their opposition to Biblical attitudes towards sex they see the Bible as a book that bears witness to ancient alien visitors, and place particular emphasis on the Book of Ezekiel, which they see as an ancient account of a UFO visitation.
Why plan the event in Israel, and not, say Amsterdam, where an eyebrow would not have been raised?
Well, the Jewish people, says Drori, have a very special part to play in the aims of the Raëlian movement.
Everyone else was created in laboratories. But Jewish people are a combination of the Elohim (the aliens) and man. They are part Eloha, part human so they [the aliens] feel more emotional toward the Jewish people.
It was for this reason that the Elohim asked the Raëlians to construct an embassy for them in Jerusalem a few years back. But so far plans for the embassy have come to nought.

So now the Jews are no longer God’s chosen people, but the alien’s chosen people. Right…
Btw I’m from Amsterdam and still live near it, and I bet some eyebrows would have been raised. It’s not orgy city, you know. But yes, there’s a lot more freedom than in Tel Aviv.
