THERE really ought to be a law against concentrating media attention on too many grotesque Christians all at the same time. It makes it so difficult for bloggers like us to keep up – and this week it’s been a real headache.

But let’s try with a weekend round-up, shall we? First, we have Stephen “Birdshit” Green pitting the tattered remains of his wits against the organisers of the Atheist Bus Campaign.

By now the entire country must be aware of his fatuous complaint to the Advertising Standards Authority against the ABC, but it’s a sure bet that not many have paused to consider the ramifications of his latest foray against the forces of reason.

Fortunately, we have the likes of Nullifidian to peer forensically into the affair and point out precisely  where Green’s efforts might lead. Go there and be both edified and amused.

While Green was still hogging the headlines and prompting peals of laughter, another ghastly Christian came flapping into the limelight. We really think that Andrea Minichiello Williams, Director of the Christian Legal Centre, should be exposed only at Hallowe’en. Look at her picture – I rest my case.

What brought this crazy bat down from the rafters was the case of Gary McFarlane, who lost his job with Relate because his homophobia – er, religious convictions – came into conflict with his duties.

An employment tribunal this week rejected his claim of religious discrimination, although he won his wrongful dismissal claim.

Ms Minichiello had lots to say on the subject. This is just some of it:

It is important to note that Mr McFarlane has never refused to counsel a same sex couple; he merely raised the potential conflict between his Christian faith and homosexual conduct. It is deeply disturbing that the mere expression of religious belief with an inability to give unqualified support to sexual orientation issues means that a Christian can be dismissed with no attempt to provide suitable accommodation for his or her beliefs. The law preventing religious discrimination against Christians is in danger of becoming a dead letter.

Terry Sanderson,  President of the National Secular Society countered:

This is the right outcome for this case. The fundamentalists who are mounting one challenge after another to Employment Tribunals are trying hard to overturn the laws that protect gay people from discrimination. They are seeking to place Christian dogma over the rights of people to fair treatment. They must not succeed.

Finally, over to the US where we learn with a mixture of astonishment and amusement that man who spawned one of America’s most useless Presidents  – the born-again Christian imbecile and English language assassin George Dubya –  wants to see another Bush in the Whitehouse!

According to this report, Bush’s father, former President George H W Bush said he would like to see his second son, Jeb, become president some day. Christ on a stick, is the man insane?

Interviewed on Fox News Sunday, Bush said his second son, a former governor of Florida, had all the qualifications to serve in the White House. Jeb Bush is a pro-life convert to Catholicism who oversaw 21 executions as Governor and never agreed to commute any sentence.

Said Bush Sr, who served as President from 1989-1993:

I’d like to see him run. I’d like to see him be president one day, or senator, whatever, yes I would.

More sensibly, he added:

Right now is probably a bad time. We’ve had enough Bushes in there.

For the record, Bush and the current incumbent, George W, are the second father and son in US history to serve as President. John Adams was the second president and his son, John Quincy Adams, the sixth.

No father has ever been followed by two sons into the White House.

Dubya will leave office on January 20 with approval ratings hovering just below 30 percent in many polls, some of the lowest of any president in history.

  1. Nice little bit of fatwa envy going on over at that christian law place.

Mr. McFarlane said that: ‘If I were a Muslim, this would not have happened. But Christians seem to have fewer and fewer rights’

    • Muslim prisoners for sex offences may opt out of therapy (Times 9 April 2008)
    • Non Muslim father banned from Swimming Pool (Telegraph 18/4/08)
    • Magistrate investigated for refusing evidence in veil (BBC 8/1/08)
    • Betts Awards ‘Three Little Pigs’ too offensive (BBC)

  2. Cases like this do not show that Christians ‘have fewer and fewer rights’ just that their requests to ignore the law regarding the rights of gay people are more likely to be turned down, which is not the same thing.
I have a feeling that Ms Minichiello will get a real taste for the limelight in 2009.
