A RECENT report from Lucknow in India  reveals that “a supreme forum of the Sunnis” has issued a fatwa that colouring the hair black is un-Islamic.

The fatwa, issued by the Darul Ifta of Deoband, says:

Applying black colour in hair is unlawful.

The fatwa was issued in response to a question posted at its official website, which read:

My brother is 26-year-old. His hair is turning white due to natural factors, please tell whether applying black colour in hair is permissible or not.

In reply, the Muftis said:

We have been sternly prohibited in Hadith ( the sayings of the Prophet) from doing so (colouring hair). Therefore, it is unlawful.

A prominent Sunni cleric, Maulana Khalid Rasheed, said:

As colouring of hair amounts to deception, the fatwa has been issued against using the colour.

Shia clerics, however, have voiced their objections against the fatwa.

Maulana Yasoob Abbas, spokesperson for the All India Shia Personal Law Board, said:

Fatwas must be issued in religious matters and not social.

A quick investigation into the issue reveals that  Muhammad was partial to a bit of hair-dying himself, but he used henna to turn it RED. In his book, The Truth About Muhammad, Robert Spencer says:

Later in life, when his hair and beard started to turn grey, he began to dye them with henna, telling his followers:

Verily, the best thing with which you can change the colour of hair is al-henna and indigo … dye your grey hair but do not resemble the Jews and the Christians.

This was because Jews and Christians used black dye. “It is not uncommon today for mujahidin to dye their beards with henna in imitation of the Prophet,” wrote Spencer.

According to an article on the net entitled The Land of Men with Flaming Orange Beards, the use of henna among white-bearded Muslims in Pakistan has been fashionable for centuries. The photo above accompanied the article.

  1. What about green, blue and purple hair? Can a Muslim be a punk? And how about dreadlocks? Prophet Mo seems rather provincial in not covering these vital issues. Almost as if he was just some bloke who died a long time ago, and not a receptacle for divine wisdom at all.

Islam ‘submission’ – the faith requiring complete submission to the will of Allah and covering every aspect of life at every level of society.

  4. Completely off topic here, but am I the only one who finds that picture hilarious? It looks like a myspace shot. The angle of his shoulder even makes it look like he’s holding the camera himself.
