As a Dutchman who was 'married' to a Jakarta doctor and who has lived in Jakarta for some 5 years, I know all to well how pervasive Islam and its social contol are in Indonesia. I couldn't even discuss my atheism with her closest family members -- who also held university degrees.

So, kudos to these brave 'internet atheists' in Indonesia!

quote: 'If everyone knew that I’m an atheist, I could lose my job, my family would hate me and also some friends. It’s also more likely that I could be physically attacked or killed because I’m a kafir (unbeliever) and my blood is halal (allowed to be spilled) according to Islam.'

Oh dear, how silly of me, I thought it was the religious who were the ones being persecuted by evil 'militant' atheists and rampant secularist! What a fool I've been, as Bob keeps saying, you know, how Xians are always being persecuted for their Xianity. you know, the really bad persecution stuff like a Xian homophobic bigot having to hand out leaflets at a gay parade, or a Xian bus driver being persecuted into driving a bus with an atheist message on it. Terrible, terrible persecution THEY have to suffer...
yeah, pull the other one...

This is a prime example of why our political representatives should protect our hard fought for rights instead of which, they allow them to be eroded at the behest of a vocal, foreign minority. (And I'm not just talking about the bunch of corrupt clowns working in Brussels).

Hear, hear, David L. Atheists in a country like Indonesia must be in the same position as freethinkers were in this country centuries ago. You simply couldn't be honest and open for fear of reprisals. This gives the lie to the claim that Britain 'used to be a Christian country', when what people mean is a country where you couldn't be anything else - unless you were prepared to suffer for it. We should support freethinkers in the Muslim world and offer all the encouragement we can.

It should make athiests in the West realise just how good we have it and encourage us to offer as much support as we can.
