I couldn't even discuss my atheism with her closest family members -- who also held university degrees. So, kudos to these brave 'internet atheists' in Indonesia! As a Dutchman who was 'married' to a Jakarta doctor and who has lived in Jakarta for some 5 years, I know all to well how pervasive Islam and its social contol are in Indonesia. I couldn't even discuss my atheism with her closest family members — who also held university degrees.

So, kudos to these brave 'internet atheists' in Indonesia!

This gives the lie to the claim that Britain 'used to be a Christian country', when what people mean is a country where you couldn't be anything else - unless you were prepared to suffer for it. We should support freethinkers in the Muslim world and offer all the encouragement we can. Hear, hear, David L.
