I agree with “Me” on the dismal state of modern journalism. The paper deserved all it got and it seems now to be the practice of papers in general to print celebrity drivel and stuff that they just made up.

As for enlightened Muslims, like moderate Christians they seem to understand deep down that it is all garbage but are unable to jettison the whole package.

What I was trying to say in my earlier, terribly written post, was that newspapers (or anything claiming to be a newspaper) have, in my mind, an obligation to tell the truth.

While I, and probably most people reading this article, think that holding muslim beliefs is pretty stupid to begin with (and thus people claiming you hold “non-muslim views” would be pretty much of a compliment), the fact is that:

1) What the “news”paper reported was (apparently), quite false and
2) It had the strong potential to damage Dr Hargey’s reputation in his community and in all probability, open him up to the threat of violent retribution from some groups.

If, for example, a local newspaper reported that I held strong muslim beliefs, I would be all up in their grill (legally, that is) demanding a printed apology and explanation as to why they claimed I do when I clearly don’t.

To be honest, I have my own axe to grind here; I am getting increasingly annoyed with newspapers of all kinds publishing things that aren’t news. They do it all the time, especially the usual suspects like the daily mail (which claimed they had found the garden of eden not too long ago; the sun had a front page story claiming they’d found atlantis about a month ago too).

The muslim angle of this story doesn’t matter to me. A paper published a false story with a total disregard for journalistic integrity, and for once, they got slapped the fuck down for it. That brings a smile to my heart.

Anyone who can describe the Quran as “enlightened, egalitarian and erudite” either has never read it or is certifiably insane. The Quran is a paean to evil to which only the Tanakh/Bible comes close, with Mein Kampf a far distant third.

Dr Hargey should be saluted for taking on and defeating Muslim McCarthyism. As the most progressive and enlightened Muslim imam and scholar in the UK, he has been in the forefront of promoting gender equality in Islam, opposing a disatrously partisan British foreign policy and working to create mutual tolerance with people of all other religions and those of no faith in the UK. Not only did he get a lump sum to prevent the smear tactics that his rightwing opponents deploy against him, but he has also obliged the offending newspaper to carry a front page apology for falsely accusing him what he clearly is not. Yesterday’s High Court victory is a big step forward for Muslim freedom and a massive defeat for Muslim fanaticism. Well done, Dr Hargey, we need more Muslims like you who advocate an enlightened, egalitarian and erudite Islam that is based on pristine Qur’anic principles instead of on secondary and medieval sources. Only when Muslims jettison all the rubbish that is contained in the hadith and the man-made Shari’ab and implement the lofty teachings of the divine text, will we be able to contribute positively to society and the world at large.
