AN Orthodox Jewish couple are suing their neighbours in a block of Bournemouth flats over motion sensors which automatically turn on the lights in the communal hallway.

Dena Coleman
The pair of religious dolts – Dena and Gordon Coleman – insist that the system, installed to cut down lighting costs at Embassy Court, makes them prisoners in their own flat between Friday evenings and Saturday nights.
According to the Times, like many Orthodox Jews, the Colemans will not use electricity between sundown on Friday and Saturday night, which they regard as a day of rest. But since the sensors were installed, the lights come on as soon as they set foot outside their front door – which they say makes them “responsible” for switching them on and therefore prohibits them from leaving the building.
The couple say that their human rights have been breached, and are claiming up to £5,000 damages. If their claim is successful, the owners of the 35 flats in the seafront building will be liable to pay the couple’s costs as well as any damages.
Dr Coleman, 56, a head teacher at a Jewish Orthodox school in Borehamwood, and her husband have owned the apartment at Embassy Court for six years and spend most weekends there. The lights were installed six months ago by the building’s management company to save energy and reduce the electricity bills.
The couple’s offer to install a manual override for use on the sabbath was turned down by the Embassy Court Management Company on the grounds that it would set an “unacceptable precedent”.
In a letter to the owners of the other flats, the Colemans wrote:
Faced with a situation where we could never again have full use of our flat, we were left with no alternative but to seek legal advice. We consulted solicitors and a caseworker at the Equality and Human Rights Commission and were advised that we had a strong claim.
One resident, who did not want to be named, said that the couple’s action has caused “quite a stir”, adding:
There has been a meeting about it and many of the residents aren’t happy. There’s a feeling that things shouldn’t be changed just to suit people in one flat when everyone else is happy.
The county court writ against the three directors of Embassy Court Management Company, who all live in the building, accuses them of breaching the couple’s rights under the Equality Act 2006 and Human Rights Act 1998.
In a statement the company said:
The directors believe that almost all lessees at Embassy Court support the actions taken by the management company to reduce communal lighting costs. Although other lessees are innocent parties in this legal dispute, in accordance with the lease expenses reasonably incurred in these legal proceedings will be recoverable from all lessees in the service charge.
The case is due to be heard at Bournemouth County County later this year.
Leslie Bunder, the editor the Jewish community website somethingjewish.com, claimed that the Colemans were over-reacting. He said:
As long as they are not physically doing the act of turning the light on, it’s actually not against the rules. They should not be putting the onus on their neighbours to change. It’s a bit arrogant really. It’s an embarrassment, it’s giving reasonable Jews a bad name.
But Chanie Alperowitz, the director of Bournemouth Chabad, an Orthodox Jewish group, disagreed:
On the sabbath there are 39 forms of creative activity which are forbidden. Among them is the prohibition of lighting a fire. When using electricity, one causes a fire as there are sparks created by the electricity. If the light is switched on by someone stepping outside their door, their actions have caused it to happen.
I think the neighbours and management company should revisit their decision and accommodate their beliefs. It is not going to inconvenience anybody, especially if [the Colemans] have offered to pay for the override switch themselves. A small consideration offered in an atmosphere of give and take would help to make the world a better place.
Among the 39 prohibition, I was tickled to learn, was EXTINGUISHING a fire on the sabbath – unless it was life-threatening!

Someone has obviously failed to inform her that a spark isn't the same as fire. A spark is a discharge of electrons. Fire is generally the cuombustions of another material, causing it to release energy in the form of light and heat, turning the original material into another form of material.
Anyway, if they are unable to use electricity, why on earth would they want to be going out on a Friday night in Bournemouth? For the night life? Go out for a meal? A restaurant with no lighting that serves raw food?
June 17th, 2009 at 9:40 am
and if they install an override switch for their use they would probably forget to turn it back on for others maybe the managment company should suggest that they move and change their policies
June 17th, 2009 at 9:53 am
Orthodox Jews often recruit gentile neighbours to switch things on (or off )during the Sabbath. Here the neighbours have made the process automatic, and instead of being grateful this couple are being really stupid about it. I hope they lose a great deal of money to our wonderful legal profession and our world-beating court system.
June 17th, 2009 at 10:03 am
Honestly, these two-fridgers really get by back up. I've really got nothing but contempt for them. A perfect example example of "If you don't want me to mock your beliefs then you shouldn't have such fucking stupid beliefs".
It reminds me of the story about those ultra-orthodox Jews in Israel who pelted cars with stones for driving on the sabbath…apparently driving counts as 'work' but picking up and hurling stones doesn't. Now, if they'd been gathering sticks…
June 17th, 2009 at 11:24 am
Dr Coleman, 56, a head teacher at a Jewish Orthodox school in Borhamwood…..
Isn't this the place that applied for an eruv a couple of years back. No surprise this bloody crackpot is working at a school there then!
Some flats near to Manchester have recently been built with jewish OCD in mind and the lighting is timed so that it's on or off for the sabbath etc. seems as though we have a no win situation.
June 17th, 2009 at 11:28 am
Dave_L, I think you're under the slightly mistaken impression that religious wingnuts like this are concerned with that little thing the rest of us like to call "reality".
June 17th, 2009 at 12:00 pm
I really do hope this pair of twats lose their case lest a precedent be set, opening the doors for more vexatious claims. And they allow these people to teach children!
June 17th, 2009 at 12:01 pm
Why religion is given so much attention and "love"? Does religion even deserve this? I'm tired of religion getting preferential treatment.
June 17th, 2009 at 12:20 pm
Funny no one has mentioned the "unacceptable precedent" line. True, these folks are wingnuts, but they tried to accommodate the management company at their own expense and were refused. In the absence of further elucidation of this canned non-explanation, I am forced into the view that the management company are being somewhat arbitrary in their refusal. Orthodox restrictions–irrational as they are–have been around for a very long time. They are usually harmless to the rest of us. They are not "news" to any informed person. And religious Jews are not going to abandon their practices just because they seem "weird" to the rest of us. Pluralistic, liberal democracies can accommodate this sort of thing without breaking stride.
It's too easy to gang up on people like the Colemans. Save it for real issues, and let 'em have their light switch.
June 17th, 2009 at 12:21 pm
And wouldn't the override switch cause a spark like all switches do completely nullifying their argument?
June 17th, 2009 at 12:29 pm
Tim those ultra -ortthodox Jews are still revolting every week in Israel -They also force the busses to seat woman at the back and are curently protesting over the building of a carpark –i wish they would all bugger off to Iran–then again that would probably be unfair to Secular people in Iran
June 17th, 2009 at 12:34 pm
Clearly the solution is to tag this couple with an RFID device so the lights can detect them and leave them in the dark.
June 17th, 2009 at 12:56 pm
I wonder do these folks unplug the refrigerator on friday morning? How do they get from Borehamwood to Bournemouth? By Car? Doesn't that use sparks? do they take care to only walk along dark streets on friday nights? If they eat at a restaurant aren't they by ordering a meal causing someone to use sparks/fire/electricity to cook it? Do people seriously expect these beliefs to be respected? so many questions – are there any answers?
June 17th, 2009 at 1:41 pm
I live not far from Bournemouth, and there is a BIG Jewish community in the vicinity. I read about htis on a local news site yesterday and just fell about laughing! No wonder it is tagged You Couldn`t Make It Up!!

June 17th, 2009 at 2:16 pm
Yeah, it’s not technology that makes them prisoners. It ridiculously outdated beliefs.
June 17th, 2009 at 2:31 pm
It sounds like you're over there, then? If so, you have my deepest sympathies…
June 17th, 2009 at 2:36 pm
Actually, Anik, that would be 'the refrigerators': most orthodox jews have two, one for meat, one for dairy, in order to comply with the commandment about "Thou shalt not seethe a kid in its mother's milk".
Judaism causes global warming.

I dont live here but members of my family do -so i get to hear about it
June 17th, 2009 at 5:54 pm
I don't get the manual override. What's it supposed to do? Keep the lights on throughout the Sabbath, or keep the lights off? Either way, how can that not be an inconvenience to everyone else in the building? Doesn't matter whose paying for it, it's a stupid attempt at a compromise.
June 17th, 2009 at 6:08 pm
The first thing to say about this is that without religion there would be no conflict whatsoever. It is one thing to have a dispute about a constantly barking dog, an excessively large tree or a cat that craps in other people's gardens, but this dispute would not even exist without these people's constantly barking beliefs. I would really love to know about the tortured logic that led to a ban on the use of electricity based on rules laid down in an ancient religious text.
The second thing is that these people as well as those at the Equality and human rights commision should hang their heads in shame. I thought that such organisations were set up as a reaction to really terrible human rights abuses rather than petty matters such as this and it seems to me that Jews, of all people, should be aware of that. What an insult it is, to Jewish people of only a couple of generations ago who were gassed or starved or worked to death in labour camps, to misuse human rights laws over an automatic light switch. The lot of them are beneath contempt.
June 17th, 2009 at 6:16 pm
Since when has "Coleman" been a Jewish name?
June 17th, 2009 at 6:32 pm
When people claim 'theistards are too ignorant for words' they are 100% correct!!
What Fire??? What Spark???? There is no spark when the auto-light comes on or off.
The auto -lights use a semiconductor control there is NO SPARK.
These people are so stupid dont suggest to them what I put on another blog…..
Breathing is more WORK then turning the light on/off.
So STOP doing it by the command of your own BS.
June 17th, 2009 at 6:39 pm
Brings to mind Richard Feynman's tale of when he stayed at a Jewish theological seminary: http://bit.ly/HayJh Feynman suggested putting a condensor across the switch to suppress the spark, but for some reason the rabbinical students didn't like that idea.
June 17th, 2009 at 6:49 pm
The other lessees are not responsible for this couple's wacky beliefs, so they shouldn't be liable for any of their expenses – expenses that the couple choose to incur in order to comply with their beliefs.
On another thread somewhere I suggested that my religion demands that I wear a metre high head-dress when I go out in public, and therefore I demand that the entrance doors to all the public buildings I visit be altered to accommodate my enhanced height. If this is not done I shall sue the city fathers for disrespecting my religion.
June 17th, 2009 at 7:53 pm
I suggest a denial of service attack. Each of their neighbors buys a flashlight, and each time he spots them moving on sabbath he turns it on. So they will not be able to move at all unless they cause some electricity to be turned on. I think it is just a matter of time before they either give up, or the courts ban flashlights and subsequently force country wide blackout on sabbath on all other folks, causing a massive backlash, and passing of laws against ridiculous religious demands of religious loons.
June 17th, 2009 at 8:26 pm
If people want to live in some kind of Middle Ages, they should move to a country where everyone is as barmy as they are. I'm sure that even the Colemans are cherry-picking their 'holy' book, just as all religious nuts do.
June 17th, 2009 at 8:37 pm
"Faced with a situation where we could never again have full use of our flat, we were left with no alternative but to seek legal advice."
Of course there is an aternative – abandon an absurd belief.
June 17th, 2009 at 9:54 pm
Sabbath services.
June 17th, 2009 at 10:09 pm
Or move to another apartment building or house.
June 17th, 2009 at 10:57 pm
I an a Christian. I do accept however that time has moved on since the original rules were written. We are now so modernised that we no longer use the jawbones of asses to subdue our enemies. We now use baseball bats. How modern is that? We also try to apply common sense to it all. Maybe these two should do the same?
June 17th, 2009 at 11:12 pm
or move to isreal?
June 17th, 2009 at 11:30 pm
It actually has similarities to Adolf Hitler`s attitude – "these people are harmlessly going about their lives, so they leave me with no alternative but to attack them"!
June 17th, 2009 at 11:32 pm
A lot of this does not even come from the Bible – it is based on Rabbinical Codes which were added to what Moses supposedly taught.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:46 am
or a cave…no electricity there and it would suit their mentality.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:53 am
Always religious types are seeking special rights for their chosen beliefs.
Ask yourself this. If a person with schizophrenia were asking the building to turn the lights off because they attracted aliens would his wish be accommodated? So why should this be considered just because instead of the lights attracting aliens somebody is claiming their use pisses off their sky-daddy?
June 18th, 2009 at 7:21 am
I wonder what would happen if other residents were to receive a divine revelation stating that override switches were an abomination unto the Lord?
This override idea will create a health and safety issue, due to the possibility of residents having to walk around in the dark. That alone is reason enough to disregard their request.
June 18th, 2009 at 1:47 pm
They stay in Bournemouth from before the Sabbath until after, the fridge is not unplugged, but light bulbs are removed, (Tim – Orthodox Jews do not all have two fridges). They don't eat in restaurants, but go out to pray at the synagogue (the lights are on timeswitches) and maybe go to friends to eat where everything is cooked before the Sabbath, streetlights are on anyway and are not a problem, there are so many answers out there, you just need to look in the right places and not just dismiss it because you live differently.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:34 pm
I love how these nuts are willing to put people in harm's way (i.e.- walking down a dark hallway can lead to tripping or running into things that can cause serious injury), but they are so self-righteous that they put their absurd, outdated beliefs before the welfare of their fellow man. That's religion for you.
Luckily Orthodox Judaism is a dying religion, maybe because it's so obviously ridiculous?
June 18th, 2009 at 4:54 pm
What I should like to know is what they do about lighting in their flat between Friday and Saturday nights, especially in winter. Do they sit in the dark or leave the lights on for the duration. Now, that would not go down well with the Greens, would it. Perhaps they should employ a person of a different religious persuasion or even an atheist to do this chore for them. I am sure that there are lots of unemployed people in Bournemouth.
June 18th, 2009 at 6:06 pm
And your point is …………. ??
June 18th, 2009 at 6:10 pm
I used to mix with Christians who would not cook meals, drive their cars, or use public transport, etc, on the Sabbath (Sunday in their case). However, although they were not trying to avoid causing "sparks" (am I really writing this rubbish?), they couldn`t possibly get round the fact that by using any form of electricity or gas, for heating or lighting, they were necessitating the employment of people on a Sunday. These rules were quite enforceable in primitive societies, but have no place in the modern world.
June 18th, 2009 at 6:15 pm
As I see it, the lights could be left ON on the Sabbath – it is the "spark" caused when they are switched on that causes all the trouble! (They`re still loopy, though!!)
June 18th, 2009 at 6:18 pm
See my reply to Sean. They are not objecting to the use of electricity on the Sabbath, as Christians might! (I wonder whether God has difficulty keeping up with all the rules and regulations which His followers have come up with!!)
June 18th, 2009 at 6:36 pm
That's true. Good point.
June 18th, 2009 at 8:12 pm
I wondered that, as well, but I didn`t like to ask!
June 18th, 2009 at 9:15 pm
Actually, there will be a spark. The PIR's will detect movement and will then most probably energize a contactor which will cause a spark when it pulls in and again when it drops out after the sensors timeout. That doesn't excuse these morons though. If their invisible friend in the sky really was omniscient, he would have thought about this situation and written the rules for them way back when he was instructing them to stone people to death for having fun. They are just making this garbage up as they go along but it proves that those who made up the original garbage had no idea of what lay in the future.

I once phoned a jew who lived below me in a block of flats to tell him that some scrotes were breaking into his car as I watched them through my window. He wouldn't answer the phone because it was the sabbath. So I just went on watching them. Sad really but if you choose to live by the code etc.
June 19th, 2009 at 1:57 pm
As I said before, "Moses" only forbade the lighting of fires on the Sabbath, which does make some sense, I suppose, if you want the day reserved for religious observances. (It doesn`t make any sense if you live in Alaska, of course!) It is the Rabbis, when "interpreting" the Law, who have come up with all these ridiculous prohibitions, which just make people`s lives needlessly complicated, but give them the sense that they are "doing all the things that God commands". The Muslims are just the same, and many Christians, too, delight in carrying out rituals of all sorts in the mistaken belief that they are somehow earning Brownie Points with their Creator! All this nonsense belongs to a bygone age, and I just can`t see how any intelligent person, in this day and age, can possibly believe that it has any validity whatsoever.
June 19th, 2009 at 8:06 pm
There is a discussion on the Dawkins website about this story with many profound comments, particularly this one from "Wetbread".
"This is such a great example of the absurdity of religious logic. A day of rest is one of the few ideas in the bible I can actually get behind, but the religious then go and turn it into a self imposed burden AND push that burden onto others. Truly screwed up.

I found freethinker.co.uk very informative. The article is professionally written and I feel like the author knows the subject very well. freethinker.co.uk keep it that way.

Codswallop, you are completely stupid and don't understand the reason why the management company refuses the override switch. If I was a tenant in the apartment block, I wouldn't want myself being put at harm due to some idiots not wanting a light to be turned on. If I were to be injured, it would be ending in bloodshed for these 2 scumbags.
July 19th, 2009 at 12:27 am
What are they doing leaving their flat on the sabbath anyway?
July 21st, 2009 at 7:43 pm
I am jewish but atheist. However if a solution can be found when a situation like this occurs, without costs to the community, we should apply it. If a mechanical gadget can satisfy their demand, then let's do it. I mean we leave in a pluralistic society, and as long as the demand is dooable and reasonable, then why not let them have it. In this case they are not asking to go back to the previous system altogether.

I also wonder if they unplug their fridge. I would think they have no legal argument. But things today never surprise me, only shock me. Archaic laws invented before electricity, let alone the fact they're based on mythology, don't belong in the modern world. They seem to be a superstitous psychotic couple that want to be troublesome. "We can't leave the house cause the light comes on." Hahaha, "Help! We're trapped!" This is cracking me up!! Visualize it. Hahaha – rolling on the floor!

This is how resolving our energy crisis will fail…again through religion. Why do we still give court to the crazies?
July 26th, 2009 at 9:44 pm
My religion forbids me from seeing other people on Saturdays. Therefor I have decided that other people should ock themselves up in their house on Saturdays so I can go out into the sun.
July 29th, 2009 at 2:56 am
I think most of you are ignorant assholes. Have you ever bothered to open a book? I'm not Jewish and alas I know how the Sabbath works.
They are opening the door thus turning on the light, I get this why don't you? Also, use of the timer for your lights that's technically breaking the Mitzvah, oh and asking a gentile to do something for you on the Sabbath is a no-no too. The torah says something like: any task a Jew cannot perform on the high holy days or Sabbath cannot be performed by a gentile at a Jew's request. It's been a while since my Torah days.
Why is this custom crazy and contrary to "common sense?" Everyone has the right to their beliefs, if their beliefs are not hurting you nor being forced on you then such is life. Chuckle about it and get over it.
July 29th, 2009 at 11:55 am
Most names are Jewish names, for your info.
July 29th, 2009 at 11:58 am
Yeah, but I don't see the pain in installing a manual override for the Sabbath.
This could only happen in America, the land of the ignorant.
Instead of mocking their beliefs, let's just say that America's most popular belief (Pay the Church and God will forgive) is far more ridiculous.
They offered to pay for the override, just because you people are too lazy to FLICK A SWITCH one day a week, you deserve a slap in the face.
July 29th, 2009 at 12:02 pm
Religious nuts? How do you define religious nuts?
They are by no means religious nuts.
I live here right be the biggest Orthodox community (Bnei Brak in Israel) and I think I'm able to recognize Jewish religious nuts (which is almost unthinkable, Judaism is not a religion which in general allows 'religious nuts') when I see them.
July 29th, 2009 at 12:06 pm
No, here is "they are denying us our human rights based on our religion, and when we offer to pay for our convenience (Oh, you might have to flick a switch once a week), but that is also denied, so we're left with no other alternative."
Which, ironically, "deny human rights based on religion" is what Hitler did, not sue because he was denied HIS human rights.
Jews, gays, etc' did nothing to Hitler,
But he decided they must all die.
Your pathetic attempt is sickening.
July 29th, 2009 at 12:08 pm
The Christian religion is in essence non-compatible with common sense.
A just God will not make up a huge, overpowered, corrupt organization to take money from people who have apparently sinned, so that they do not suffer for the rest of eternity.
Phew, any Christians posting here sure set the bar for themselves. Dissing Judaism? That's the LAST thing Christians can do.
July 29th, 2009 at 12:10 pm
Actually here in Israel, Orthodox or Conservative Jews just set up FULLY automatic systems for the Sabbath, so that they do not have to do anything.
The same exact thing can be applied in USA, and is.
But being ignorant, intolerant and extremely lazy, you guys are afraid to FLICK A SWITCH, ONCE A WEEK.
Damn it people, what the hell is wrong with you?
August 9th, 2009 at 11:33 pm
You're really stupid, aren't you?
August 12th, 2009 at 4:09 am
These lights were clearly installed to increase security in the first place – so that people don't have to get their keys out in the dark etc. To have them off on the night when the most people would be coming back late is pointless and ridiculous.
September 11th, 2009 at 2:50 pm
If a person with schizophrenia were asking the building to turn the lights off because they attracted aliens would his wish be accommodated? Yes. Being a reasonable person and wanting to be friendly to my fellow man. Yes. It would not effect me in the slightest, so why not. Obviously, people out there wouldn't lift a finger to help anyone, unless there is something in it for them. In fact it seems, they wouldn't lift a finger even if it didn't effect them.

YOU CAN’T REASON WITH RELIGIOUS PEOPLE, BECAUSE IF YOU COULD THERE WOULDN’T BE ANY!! LOL
November 11th, 2009 at 11:49 pm
As usual, the religious reich thinks everyone else should change to suit them. But suggest that they compromise even a little, and they scream “Discrimination! Our rights are being violated!” Apparently, no one else has any rights.
Most of the problems of the world are, and always have been caused by religion.
Mankind will never truly be free until the black yoke of religion is lifted by the clear light of truth and logic.

but I am sorry to say that my reaction is one of sheer dismay.
these people and their damned RELIGION(S)!!!!
they should be making the world better by healing hurts and giving all they can to those with nothing…… I am saddened by the continuing pursuit of the religious and self righteous; it keeps us all on the hamster wheel, arguing, bickering, fighting, hating and binding us to the meaningless.
the fact that someone could ACTUALLY be so concerned with something as petty as an automatic sensor, is simply REPULSIVE.
