It’s an outrage! Gay drag queen Big Mama Capretta is a Catholic priest by day

THERE is much wailing and gnashing of teeth in Roman Catholic circles in the US over the recent revelation that a Catholic priest, Father Anthony (aka Vincent Capretta), is a drag queen who performs as Big Mama Capretta.

Not only that, the gay priest, from Columbus, Ohio, has a single that is currently No 25 on Billboard’s Club Play dance chart called “Big Mama’s House.”

Said Capretta:

It’s Big Mama, y’all! And I am no longer afraid to come out of the closet as a gay Catholic priest! … I am enjoying my life being who I am and who God intended me to be! Now let’s dance, y’all!

He added:

Thank you everyone for buying, playing and charting ‘Big Mama’s House’. I am living proof that a person can do anything they set their mind to. We have to love and enjoy ourselves in this world.

Catholic Online is beside itself with rage – and insists that Capretta is not a “real” Catholic priest.

The media … is not reporting that the man, Vincent Capretta who also calls himself ‘Father Anthony’, is actually part of an Independent Old Catholic Church – not the Roman Catholic Church.

Capretta said that he ‘came out of the closet’ in honor of Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual and Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month proclaimed by President Obama.

To set the record straight, Capretta is actually listed as rector of the Community of Charity, an Independent Old Catholic Church that describes itself as all-inclusive. That definition includes ‘sexual orientation’ in this group. He is not a part of the Roman Catholic Church and his church is not in communion with the See of Rome. The man, Vincent Capretta, is not a Roman Catholic. He is a member of the schismatic Old Catholic Church.

The term ‘Old Catholic Church’ actually describes a grouping of autonomous bishops and jurisdictions that began to form in the mid-19th century. They rejected Papal authority and numerous Catholic doctrines, depending upon the group. Several of the groups have become strong supporters and participants in what is now called the ‘LGBT (lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender) movement.

Most of these groups tend to embrace a more ‘liberal’, often heretical, view of Christianity. Their clergy can normally be male or female and married or celibate. Some, such as the group which Vincent Capretta belongs to, not only endorse active homosexual practices and the homosexual lifestyle but ordain practicing homosexuals.

Gay Blogs and entertainment sites on the web are gloating with headlines such as, ‘Priest Comes Out as Drag Queen with Hit Single’ and ‘Priest Looks Like a Lady’, again portraying the man as a Roman Catholic priest.

The news of this ‘Drag Queen-Priest’ has also produced a new torrent of negative comments toward the Catholic Church by the activist gay community. In addition, a backlash by Christians, both Catholics and Protestants, has been felt, as people remain unaware that this person is not really a Roman Catholic priest.

Faithful Catholics need to help set the record straight. Vincent Capretta may be a famous drag queen, he may have a hit single and he may even have ordination in an independent Old Catholic line; but, he is most certainly NOT a Roman Catholic priest. Rather, he is being used by those within a portion of the activist homosexual community to harm the Catholic Church and promote their agenda of cultural revolution.

Y'know, while I've always found anti-gay organisations (such as the church) to be… odd, in that I just don't understand where they're coming from, I've also found it incredibly odd that a gay person would want to willingly join one of them. Just doesn't make sense to me.

  2. Sean says:

This is absolutely fantastic; both his bravery and fierce acceptance of himself, and the backlash against him. He'll be defrocked, though, if you'll pardon the pun! =P

  3. Cardea says:

Why would he be defrocked? His church is all-inclusive.

  4. Jmf says:

Yep, Sean, this guy is fantastic…in an aberrant sort of way. This guy is totally lost…why do we celebrate his goofiness?

  5. Daniel says:

    Meee,
Do you imagine that people turn 18, get the right to vote and smoke cigarettes, and then are given a list of churches they can join? Most people aren't active participants in the church that they wish to join. They're indoctrinated (aka brainwashed) when they're far too young to make those decisions. It's called brainwashing for a reason. The church does EVERYTHING it can to use guilt, shame, and fear to make leaving the church a terrifying prospect. Most people who are GLBT never leave their church. It's a huge step to go from being a religious person to being non-religious. Also, religion has very little to do with one's sexuality. If a person can manage to rationalize their sexuality in the context of their religion, they have no reason to face the emotional pain of leaving their church.

  6. Daniel says:

Of course, some of us, myself included, couldn't buy into a church that hated gay people. That's why I left the Baptist faith, because the bible was supposed to be perfect and true, but there was this part about gay people being bad. I also knew that I was born gay. So why would God create me as gay, if he was against homosexuality? Did not compute. Further examination showed that the whole thing was BS. Not many people are strong enough to examine religion on that level…

  7. Zedge says:

The self loathing hypocrites are just Jealous. Long live Queen Anthony!

  8. Urmensch says:

His costume is certainly more colourful than Big Papa Ratswinger.

  9. Erp says:

He won’t be defrocked by the Roman Catholic Church because he belongs to a church that the Roman Catholics consider ‘schismatic’. However if ordained by an Old Catholic bishop which presumably he was, he would be considered to have legit priestly orders by the Roman Catholic church abet irregular (in other words if he joined the Roman Catholic church, proclaimed himself ‘cured’ of gayness, etc., he could become a fully recognized working priest without being ordained again).

The Old Catholics split from the Roman Catholic church in large part because of the proclamation of papal infallibility at Vatican 1. Since they included a bishop or two they can continue to make new priests and bishops and have done so. They in turn have also split leading to denominations with a wide range of views (and also of probity).

His own church has a web page which indicates it is quite inclusive but also seemingly independent of any hierarchy. I haven’t the faintest idea why is meets in a place named after Lady Jane Grey, a staunch protestant.

According to one blog (which has a lot of information though accuracy is unknown), he was ordained in what is now the United Ecumenical Catholic Church though he and his church are no longer apparently with them. The blog also states he served 3 years for mail fraud which seems to be accurate (also see this news article from 1989).

At least this guy is honest about the fact that he enjoys dressing up in frocks. Let's give him bonus points for that!

  11. William Harwood says:

Let us imagine that "God" exists and its bible authors tried to write exactly what it told them. We must then conclude that it proved totally incompetent in conveying its intended meaning, since different authors passed on very different messages. For example, Leviticus (18:22 & 20:13) shows the god declaring that homosexual men are to be executed. But the author of Deuteronomy (13:6) legitimated the man who had "a male lover who means as much to you as your own breath."
Pharisee books and all Christian books depicted death as a prequel to eternal life. Sadducee books (Ecclesiastes 9:56; Job 7:9-10) were adamant that life-after death was a gentile superstition.

  12. William Harwood says:

CONTinued: Jewish Testament books were unanimous that eating pork or lobster was as sinful and forbidden as raping the wife of a fellow Jew. Acts (11:6-9) abolished those prohibitions, at the same time that Matthew (5:17) was declaring that Jesus had pronounced the Torah permanent and unchangeable. The "Commandment" of Exodus 20:17 specifically legitimized the owning of private property. But Acts (5:1-10) shows that Christians must be communists, and a convert who retained some of the proceeds of the sale of his house was promptly snuffed.
There are approximately 1,000 similar situations where bible passage A directly contradicts bible passage B. But those quoted above are more than any True Believer has ever tried to answer.

  13. Nick says:

    No true Scotsmen..

they say no christian would do such a thing, and then one does, they twist reality to insist he's not a *real* christian.

I particularly liked the bit where the response likened liberty to heresy.

  14. Phil E. Drifter says:

LOL Look at all the homophobes frothing at the mouth because this guy is happy being who he is and making money doing it.

  15. Callisto says:

Nah, I think he should be totally ashamed of himself for coming out…as a catholic priest. How disgusting, and what an abomination to society. He should go get some therapy. I'm sure there are plenty of churches where he can go to get cured of his catholicism, maybe an exorcism would do it?

  16. T.S. says:

    Hhhmmm…

If his church is generally all-inclusive with loads of females as well as men as "priests", married and celibate and it's all part of this LGBT group… WHY did it take him so long to come out of the closet?

  17. Jim says:

The catholic church (the whole thing) is on the verge of breaking apart. It reminds one of the late Soviet Union at the time Gorbachev took over. I think the pope is afraid of that and plays a pre-Gorbachev game.
Concerning the current schismatics I think it is just a harbinger of things inevitably to snowball.
The sooner the healthier. The Catholics then can stay what they are and choose for themselves without being excommunicated or feeling irrelevant.

  18. barriejohn says:

    There's a priest in Ohio who's dressed

In a frock, with a bra not a vest!

    Now those Catholics Online

    Have begun to opine

That this "Father" was not truly blessed!!

  19. kumbucket says:

Because he's not lost. He's happy. You're lost.

  20. Danielle says:

Am I the only one who thought his bra looked fabulous?

  21. mike says:

He'll probably be thrown out of the church now. Shame, if he wanted to stay in it all he needed to do was wear a dress inside the church and only sleep with boys under, preferably, 13.

  22. Kiore says:

Because aside from the issue of being raised as a member of a faith, many LGBT naturally hold certain beliefs just like heterosexuals, and the fact they're denied by many other people of faith doesn't change that. What else can they do but either deny one, or actively try to change things?

  23. Aaron says:

He would be defrocked because Sean didn't read the entire article.
