The "nuclear family" is not, and has not always been, the only successful human social model, even though the religiots would have us believe that this is what "God" originally ordained for the human race. Of course, their explanation for facts which contradict this view is that those involved were or are "barbaric", "unenlightened", "primitive" and "ignorant", and acting in opposition to "God's plan"! That's an important point that you raise there.
