SCOTLAND’S annual celebration of gay culture, Glasgay!, is scheduled to take place in Glasgow between October 8 and November 8 this year – and the Christian Institute is less than ecstatic over a play in the festival portraying Jesus as a transsexual called Jesus, Queen of Heaven.
Publicity for the show describes it thus:
Jesus is a transsexual woman. And it is now she walks the earth. This is a play with music that presents her sayings, her miracles, and her testimony. And she does not condemn the gays or the queers or the trans women or the trans men, and no, not the straight women nor the straight men neither.
Because she is the Daughter of God, most certainly, and almost as certainly the son also. And God’s child condemns nobody. She can only love …
Trannie Jesus is played by performer and poet Jo Clifford.

Predictably, the Christian Institute (and others) went nuts over the news.
The CI pointed out that:
The festival has already provoked worldwide outrage at an exhibition which encouraged the public to graffiti a Bible. Many obscene and offensive messages were scrawled before public outcry resulted in the Bible’s enclosure in a secure transparent case.
The play is being part funded by Culture and Sport Glasgow but the sums involved have not been revealed.
The CI’s Simon Calvert said:
If Glasgow’s council taxpayers were consulted, I doubt they would consider this was a good use of their money. What with this and the Bible defacing exhibit, you have to wonder what is the next outrage Glasgow City Council has planned.
Gordon Macdonald of Christian group CARE for Scotland added:
Organisers of these events are trying to placate the gay rights lobby while riding roughshod over everyone else – at public expense.
And a spokesman for the Roman Catholic Church said:
Coming in the wake of the outrageous Bible exhibition, which encouraged the defacing of the Bible in the name of gay rights, the funding of another production with the provocative title Jesus, Queen of Heaven will leave most citizens of Glasgow aghast. Serious questions must now be raised about the agenda being pursued by CSG.

Ooh, dear!"Outrage" and "offence": I love it already!!

Whatever your beliefs, it is a weird thing to do. If outrage and offence is the required effect, this is the way to do it. Perhaps a bunch of students would have done it for free, though.
Who on earth would go and see this?

Makes a change from trying to placate the xtains/muslim/catholic/jewish lobby while riding roughshod over everyone else – at public expense.

But you haven't actually seen her act, OurSally, so how can you condemn it out of hand like that? It might be very entertaining and thought-provoking. At least give her a chance!

It really does tell you all you need to know about these major "faiths" that they get so absolutely incandescent with rage the minute someone suggests that there might be a feminine aspect to their gods (as surely there would be if they really did exist)! It's all about exercising power really, and keeping people in their ("rightful") place!!
August 27th, 2009 at 1:28 pm
BTW There's nothing on the News about any major disasters in Florida, so it looks as though all those prayers are still working!

It does appear that the show has no other purpose to it than to poke the godly with a pointy stick. They never ever fail to rise to the bait though do they? Why oh why can't they just shrug and ignore it, surely they can see that it is just a deliberate attempt to wind them up. I wonder if the people quoted in the article are maybe a little bit stupid?
August 27th, 2009 at 7:03 pm
Yes – we wouldn't have even heard about it if it weren't for their pathetic bleatings again, and now they've virtually guaranteed a full house! In any case, what possible harm to their "faith" could a comedy act cause?

My reply to OurSally has disappeared into the ether again, but if you click onto my name you can read it amongst all the other items from this "Bermuda Triangle of Comments"! (Does this only happen to me?)

It's back again, but the reply I have just posted to Stoneyground has obviously taken its place – aaaargh!!!

If Alanis Morissette could be God then why not a transgender female Jesus? Other than the fact that the perpetually outraged will be outraged, that is?

I WISH TO POINT OUT A FACTUAL INACCURACY IN THIS QUOTE.
“The CI pointed out that:The festival has already provoked worldwide outrage at an exhibition which encouraged the public to graffiti a Bible. Many obscene and offensive messages were scrawled before public outcry resulted in the Bible’s enclosure in a secure transparent case”
THE GLASGAY FESTIVAL WAS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE EXHIBITION REFERRED TO AS “MADE IN GOD’S IMAGE”. THIS IS AN INACCURATE ATTRIBUTION AND READERS SHOULD TAKE CARE. The work was produced by artist funded by Culture & Sport Glasgow and such artists did not feature in or have anything to do with the Glasgay festival.
