Even worse is the situation of someone whose partner gets "hooked" by some such organization. I saw this many times whilst an evangeical - the sheer bewilderment that this person whom they thought they knew had now transmogrified into a complete stranger with whom they had absolutely nothing in common, and who was prepared to make no effort at all to bridge the gap or make any concessions whatsoever.
