PRESIDENT Barack Obama’s defence of the “just” war principle in Oslo this week, where he received the Nobel Peace Prize, has drawn praise from many Conservative Christian nutsters, including Sarah Palin.
She seized on the opportunity to plug her book, said to be a breathtakingly dishonest memoir called Going Rogue (see here and here).

I liked what he said. In fact, I thumbed through my book quickly this morning, saying, ‘Wow, that really sounded familiar.’ I talked in my book, too, about the fallen nature of man and why war is necessary at times, and history’s lessons when it comes to knowing when it is when we engage in warfare.
According to this report, Richard Land of the Southern Baptist Convention said Obama’s speech followed in the tradition of past presidents.
The president’s eloquent defense of America’s role in the world as chief defender and guarantor of freedom and human rights over the last six decades should be reassuring to every freedom-loving person in the world and gratifying to all of those men and women and their families who have served and sacrificed in our armed forces to make that defense of freedom possible.
Land added:
Further, the president’s trenchant defence of the fact that there is evil in the world that must be confronted by armed force should reassure all Americans as we confront a deadly worldwide terrorist threat from a death cult that has taken root within Islam.
It [the speech] could have been given by Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Reagan, Bush, Clinton or (G W] Bush. In other words, it was squarely in the bipartisan American tradition of defending freedom against totalitarianism that has united our foreign policy during the entire Cold War and beyond.
The President said in his acceptance speech that he admired the non-violence teachings of Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr but that he:
Cannot be guided by their examples alone. I face the world as it is, and cannot stand idle in the face of threats to the American people. For make no mistake: evil does exist in the world. A non-violent movement could not have halted Hitler’s armies. Negotiations cannot convince al-Qaida’s leaders to lay down their arms. To say that force may sometimes be necessary is not a call to cynicism – it is a recognition of history; the imperfections of man and the limits of reason.

Easy to talk the talk, but walking the walk? The speech could have been Adolf Hitler’s or Mahatma Ghandi’s, and we all should know who of those two may actually have meant his words. Obama was just selling his wars to a gullible audience; his surge and drones make clear he doesn’t have a clue of what’s happening in the world. The US is not a peace-loving country because there’s too much money to be made by producing, selling and using weapons. Without conflicts, the US economy would be in a worse state than it is right now. But considering your country the greatest in the world may mean believing you can get away with anything, even waging wars and receiving a peace prize.

Obama is doing quite well making the World a peaceful place so deserves his prize
North Korea and Iran are carrying on with their nuclear weapons project.
Israel/Palestinian peace talks: Obama demanded that Israel stop building settlements before the talks could start [never been required before]. Now they can’t get the talks started. Well done!
Iraq is slipping back into chaos. Another result!
Afghanistan: A complete mess of country where the conflict has reached impasse and US and Europeans soldiers are being slaughtered.
Well done Obama, the fundies must love you and you deserve the Nobel peace prize.

I like the fact that Sarah Palin has to re-read her own book just to remind herself what she thinks about stuff.
“That sounds familiar, now where did I hear that before… ah yes. I said something similar in that book I released less than a month ago. Good job I keep a copy on hand.”

I find the fact of the most powerful man in the world being given the nobel peace prize disturbing. What for exactly?
The nobel prize has a pretty good history of lack of political motivation (occasional errors) but on the whole fairly good, I think that is due to the fact the awards are, mostly, based on science.

There’s a difference between the fundies just happening to agree with Obama in this instance, and Obama agreeing with fundamentalism. So it’s silly to tar the man by association.
(PS I’m not an Obamaniac. I like the guy and I’m glad he won, but I’ve never thought he could change US policy in any profound way, and I think a lot of his admirers are going to be disappointed)

I’m a conservative atheist….it’s like being between a rock and a hard place finding a candidate that support the free-market system, while not being a religious idiot….
I think Palin could be a decent president when dealing with the economy….I’m just scared shitless of what she would do to the wall of separation between church and state. I can picture it now: 3 times daily (on the sound of church bells ringing through a speaker implanted into our ears), we must kneel on our government-issued kneelers, face east, and bow down to our messiah of the world sitting comfortably in his palace at the Vatican….being lip-serviced by missing little boys.

Barack Obama is godphuqt, so godphuqt that he has been Uncle Tom-ed into expelling Sky Fuhrers of his own colour from Cloud Cuckoo Land and accepting the status of the domesticated livestock of a god created by his ancestors’ white conquerors in their own image. That does not justify his treatment of nontheists and gays as less-than-equal, but it does explain it.
Like all persons infected with belief in Santa Claus and other fairy tale characters, Obama deludes himself that he is doing the uninfected a favor by maximizing their incentive to share his god-virus (the way vampires [*] believe they are doing the uninfected a favor when they bite them on the neck). And while his current war policies make him look like a ShicklBush clone, he is correct in identifying the Taliban and bin Laden as a threat to the survival of the human race. If we in the civilized world do not sterilize, or at least neutralize, the mad dogs trying to impose their tyranny on populations that do not want to be (their) mindslaves, they will exterminate us. Perhaps Obama does not fully grasp that reality. But he is nonetheless doing what must be done to forestall it.

I am a 74 year old Agnostic Atheist who has been an Atheist Activist for OVER FIFTY years. And I am damn well more experienced and knowledgeable than are most of those my age, much less anyone younger.
Plus I have a gifted level IQ with a tested AQ which is nearly double the national average. (AQ = Ability Quotient which is the ability to Effectively use the IQ one has)
