WHEN P Z Myers drew attention yesterday to a poll asking whether an “offensive” billboard – erected by the Joliet Jackhammers, a baseball team in Illinois – should be removed, 56 percent said Yes, while 44 percent said No.

This morning the Yes poll has dwindled to  a miserable 11 percent.

This is the billboard:

Huffed Councilwoman Jan Hallums Quillman:

It’s in very poor taste. To have God tell you to buy tickets? Give me a break.

The sign, according to this report, went up last Saturday, and is part of an ad campaign where ten percent of December ticket sales will be donated to a church or charity of the customer’s choice. Said the team’s Executive Vice President/General Manager Jamie Toole:

We’re not trying to be blasphemous. The concept behind the billboard is to bring people back to the Web site where it clearly explains what we’re doing.

  1. It’s in very poor taste. To have God tell you to buy tickets? Give me a break.

But apparently, supplications to said god to influence the outcome of a baseball game are perfectly OK?

    I see.

  2. Quite right Tim. And let’s not forget all the crazy things ‘god’ tells his deluded followers to do.

  3. 104,000+ votes, 91% “No.” Well done, everybody.

  4. Tim said essentially what I was going to say.

  5. There’s one just down my street that has god telling me to go to church. It’s in very poor taste.

  6. God and sports, hmmmm, why would the creator of all things care??
