I see now that it’s C.S.Lewis who is being quoted here (I thought it might have been): a very cunning wordsmith, highly respected by “intellectuals” amongst the evangelical brotherhood, but whose arguments, when closely examined, have little substance. He was no philosopher.

That’s a very good point that Winker Watson makes there, though I notice that he’s actually quoting someone else! “I know that God is not a figment of my imagination because He’s not at all the way that I imagined that He would be.” I don’t consider that my Christian belief was the result of any mental illness, as some propose, as I never imagined that “God” really appeared to me, or “spoke to me” in any discernible way, other than by influencing my thought processes by various means (and that should be a doddle for someone who had created the Universe!). I was merely choosing to believe in the existence of a being whom I had been told about. However, you do have to ask whether it makes any more sense to believe in someone who is the figment of another person’s imagination!!
