<i>"If everybody followed the logic of what their faith requires of them, they would all become extremists."</i>

I've said this many, many times. Only the "extremists" interpret their faith correctly!

A.C.Grayling is accurate when he refers to the need for "control" by religions. Most of these "controllers" don't even believe the stuff they vomit on to their ignorant flocks. I have been asked to prove this by a fundie in the past. I suggest that it is self evident. If, for example, a priest believed what he was spouting about truth, love, suffer little children and the rest of it to his flock and the concommitant that if you fall away from these standards you stand before god and end up in an infinity of hell how could they do what they do.

Let us remind ourselves what they do: rape little boys; steal; lie; brutalise children with clubs; force them to slave in their launderies for example and so much else. How could anyone, even the meanest, most ignorant, vicious sadist on the planet even approach these acts if they believed, really believed, that they flames of the furnaces of hell awaited and the agony would be for infinity.

They are self serving, on the make, con artists with some of the best acts ever. What could be better then extracting vast amounts of money, being ass licked by the flock, listened to as if you were Socrates in return for promising forgivness, by your special relationship to a god who is an invention. Admit it, readers, this is one sweet deal. The problem is you have to be a crook to benefit and many of us just could sucker that many poor and ignorant people.

Yay Peter! This is a cool piece! Wish Grayling had said more about combating religious extremism outside the topic of faith schools.
