Catholic priest, 82, is a porn star

AN 82-year-old Catholic priest, father Marques Barbosa, became an unwitting porn star when he was shown on Brazilian TV last week having sex with a 19-year-old altar boy.

He was the “star turn” in a report on the SBT TV programme Conexao Reporter which also included charges by three former altar boys that they had been sexually abused by local priests.

Barbosa was caught on a hidden camera in the north-eastern state of Alagoas.

After the act, the priest’s face is identified as he looks toward the camera and says:

Who’s there? Who is it?

After the show was aired, Alagoas bishop Valerio Breda ordered the removal from church work of priests Barbosa, Edilson Duarte and Raimundo Gomes.

Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi told AFP:

One was removed from his parish and faces charges in the civil justice system.

He added that the other two had been suspended from their duties pending an investigation.

Graphic video of Marques Barbosa’s abuse a man identified as Fabiano is being sold on the streets of the town of Arapiraca, according to this report.

Elsewhere in Latin America, a Spanish religious instructor was reported to have been jailed in Chile for possession of pornographic images of children.

A prosecutor said the priest, Jose Arregui, 53, would be tried for child pornography possession on March 24.

The church sex abuse scandal unravelling at Roman Catholic-run schools and institutions across Europe has now reached Switzerland, where senior clergy admitted yesterday that 60 cases were under investigation.

Abbot Martin Werlen, of the Benedictine Abbey of Einsiedeln, said reports of abuse had been submitted to the Swiss church authorities in the wake of the disclosures in Ireland, Germany, Austria, Poland and Holland.

He said the Swiss Catholic Church was investigating the cases, but nvestigations still had to show whether all the allegations of abuse in Switzerland were genuine.

In Germany, priests holding a service in a Catholic church in the Bavarian town of Bad Tölz were shouted at by outraged members of the congregation on Sunday for defending a fellow priest who had been convicted of sexually abusing adolescents.

It emerged last week that the convicted priest had been on duty in the Pope’s then diocese of Munich-Freising during the 1980s.

Meanwhile, The Times has been accused of being “shockingly anti-Catholic” in its coverage of the sex abuse scandal. Damien Thompson, blog editor for the Telegraph Media Group, took particular exception to this Times headline:

Pope knew priest was a paedophile, but allowed him to continue with ministry.

Raged Thompson:

Let me quote my colleague Cristina Odone, former editor of The Catholic Herald: ‘I have been shocked by the Times’s anti-Catholic coverage, which verges on the hysterical and fanatical. And I want to know: why is this happening?’

What I’d like to do is put The Times’s elder statesman, Lord Rees-Mogg, on the spot. How can he, as a former editor of the paper and a devout and distinguished Catholic, stand by as the paper he loves traduces the Holy Father?

Prize for best quote of the week goes to Christopher Hitchens. Writing for Slate magazine, he said:

The Roman Catholic Church is headed by a mediocre Bavarian bureaucrat once tasked with the concealment of the foulest iniquity, whose ineptitude in that job now shows him to us as a man personally and professionally responsible for enabling a filthy wave of crime. Ratzinger himself may be banal, but his whole career has the stench of evil—a clinging and systematic evil that is beyond the power of exorcism to dispel. What is needed is not medieval incantation but the application of justice—and speedily at that.

Of course, it’s all a Gay plot, according to one comment in the Telegraph. After reading that I wasn’t much inclined to read the rest of the tripe. Stupid sad idiots.

  2. Stuart W says:

The past couple of years have not been a great time to be a Catholic Church spokesperson, have they? Presenting yourself as the holy leading light of the world is somewhat scuppered when damning allegations of widespread child abuse and its covering up are surfacing like molehills in a Springtime meadow.
All I have to say to Christina Odone is thank goodness for the ‘hysterics’ and ‘fanatics’!

  3. Marcus says:

You might have thought that rather than throwing a hissy fit because the press has the temerity to report child abuse by the clergy, people like Damien Thompson and Cristina Odone would be keeping their heads down. Or better still, hanging them in shame.

According to the CNN website, the whole affair is creeping ever closer to Ratty’s front door, too.

“In recent weeks allegations of abuse by priests have been accumulating fastest in Germany, Benedict’s home country. On Friday, the archdiocese of Munich revealed that it had allowed an abusive priest to continue pastoring in the early 1980s, when Pope Benedict — then known as Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger — was archbishop there.
It was the first incident of the handling of a case of priestly sexual abuse to possibly implicate the pontiff himself.” (Full article here: http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/europe/03/15/church.abuse/index.html)

Apparently some underling has been hung out to dry for it to protect Ratty. But you can’t help feeling/hoping that this is going to become really damaging for him and his legions of paedophiles.

I did read Thompson’s article and most of the comments as I wanted to see how abysmally servile they could get. It was the usual crop of mitigations split between the “the RCC is no worse than other organizations” and “the atheists are just out to attack the RCC for no reason”….One might think that an organization that claims to have a direct line to dog and a lock on morality that gives them the right to tell us all how to live, would not harbour any such criminals in its ranks. It is hardly a excuse to say “we’re no worse than the others”. Catholics would be a fertile field of research for anyone studying Stockholm syndrome.

  5. Angela_K says:

How I love to see the catholics shooting themselves in the foot! Every time they harp on about morals being the preserve of the religious, along comes another scandal to prove what a bunch hypocritical bastards they really are. The Torygraph has long been a catholic and bigots’ standard bearer and is timid in its criticism of religion. Everyone should read the comments on their online edition; it attracts loads of religious nutjobs like our Bob the bigot.

I think we need a definition of anti-catholic. It seems to include benign, not to say grovelling, reports from the BBC apparently wetting themselves at the possibility that Ratty might actually, truly, honestly if we asked properly deign to say a few words on Thought for the Day. It also includes £20 million tax payers cash to provide for a State Visit including the usually nonsense of Elizabeth Windsor being transported to Edinburgh – arse licking for Liz non stop also necessary as she does love feeling royal – to meet him. Then the amazing crap of Ratty taking the step for Cardinal Newman to be beatified on the way to becoming a Saint. No discussion of this nasty and bigotted man and his so destructive and cruel policies about homosexulaity, protecting paedo priests, wrecking people’s lives with his obssessions concerning euthanasiasia, contraception etc. Is this really anti-catholic?

  11. tony e says:

Here is a challenge – lets see if this planet can go a week without some priest being caught with his dick out.

  12. William Harwood says:

Broga mentioned Cardinal Newman’s gay-bashing policies, but omitted to mention that Newman was himself gay.
Is it “anti-Nazi” to say that Hitler was a monster and Nazism was a totalitarian tyranny? Then why pin a similar label on historians and reporters who recognize that the RC church is the world’s largest organized crime syndicate? The 60 million AIDS and starvation homicides perpetrated by Pope Ratzinazi and his down syndrome predecessor by their self-serving prohibition of sane birth control and sane disease control make them the most prolific serial killers in human history, surpassing even Adolf Hitler.
The UK government should refuse to grant Ratzinazi diplomatic immunity, and warn him that if he enters Mrs Mountbatten’s Land he will be arrested and handed over to the World Court to be tried for crimes against humanity.
Are the Telegraph hierarchs so insane that they believe covering up paedophilia is not evil when their Vatican Fuhrer does it?

  13. Broadsword Calling Danny Boy says:

How anyone can leave their child in care of a priest is beyond me.
I’m always on the lookout for dodgy characters and blokes in dogs collars are definitely on my radar.

  14. Broga says:

@William Harwood. I didn’t know Cardinal Newman was gay. Thanks for the information.

I heard this afternoon that Cardinal Brady (I hope I got the name right) has just preached a sermon saying that it is time to move on, sorry he did not take action against a paedo priest, many apologies to the victims, we all make mistakes but important to look to the future….. What he didn’t mention, but later one of the victims did, was that Brady had been present when the boys were asked to take a vow of silence.

These people have no shame and this is a shameless attempt to save his job.

  15. AngieRS says:

Sorry, William, but I thought Broga was talking about ratchatcher, not Newman.

  16. Broga says:

@Broadsword. Little story. Probably apocryphal but who can tell any more.

RC Church in Ireland desperate to find a priest after the old and knackered priest has to retire. They appoint in an inexperience and very underconfident young priest. He is taking confession and he soon encounters a problem. A man comes in and confesses to having sex with a young boy. Young priest is lost, no idea, how many Hail Marys or whatever and he does not want to reveal his ignorance. He grabs a young lad walking past the confessional and says, “Run over to Father O’Flaherty and ask him what he gives for sex with a young boy.”

Lad returns, “Father O’Flaherty says he usually gives two cans of coca cola, a bag of salted peanuts and a packet of crisps.”

  17. Broga says:

AngieRS I was. But I still found the Newman information fascinating.

My comments came after the reference to Newman and I can see, on rereading, how they might have been misunderstood. Sorry William or anyone else misled.

    The fault is mine.

  18. Broadsword Calling Danny Boy says:

    @Broga

Enjoyed your joke. I bet the Irish are coming up with plenty more in a similar vein at present.
In light of the paedo priest scandals maybe Father O’Flaherty would consider a name change to Father O’Friggery.

  19. barriejohn says:

Broga: I posted a link to that story regarding Brady above:

    “Still no resignation”:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/8572081.stm

  20. Broga says:

@barriejohn. Many thanks. I will read it now.

  21. Broadsword Calling Danny Boy says:

    @barriejohn

I saw that article on TV this afternoon. Part of the article included an interview with a lady who as a child was abused by Fr Smyth in 1974. She suffered a further four years of this because ,she says, Sean Brady covered it up. She went on to say that rape was the same crime in 1974 as it is now. As an Irish citizen Brady had a responsibility to report this to the police.

All we get now is an “apology” from a poor excuse for a man who probably wishes it would all just go away.

  22. Broga says:

@barriejohn I hope your link will be widely read. I picked up the news on my car radio on the way home. It is far worse than I realised. Brady was present when they victims were asked to sign vows of silence, not just agree verbally as I assumed. The number of victims is vast and the cover up commensurate with that in its deceit and contemptible insistence on putting priest before victim. I also read the victims’ responses and they said what you might expect that Brady’s words are claptrap, meaningless. The demand for him to resign continues. This scoundrel seems determined to cling to his job: head of the RC church in Ireland.

    Thanks again.

  23. Marcus says:

I find it incredible that Brady still can’t bring himself to do the decent thing. As I understand it, he has apologised to people who ‘feel’ have been let down by him. No, you perverted old fucker, they HAVE been let down by you. And by a great many of your kind. You should all be begging for forgiveness. And if there was any justice in the world you would all be doing time.

  24. Normand says:

One of the most hypocrite was cardinal Spellman who himself was gay and one of the most homophobic of all. He was notorious for bringing young gays to his “palace” and not worrying because after all, who would have believed that that saintly “Man of God” was gay!!! As a gay ex-catholic I feel like puking when I read about this bastard who made us feel like pariahs when we grew up with his sanctimonious bullshit ringing in our ears while all the time he was having his cake and eating it in more ways than one. Finally, maybe they will get what is coming to them!

  25. Lucy says:

Even my dear 90 year old catholic mother has not a good word to say for Ratty and his filthy crew.

It is a truly foul and corrupt organisation. Blair did indeed find his spiritual home…

  26. NeoWolfe says:

The conduct of the catholic church is, always has been, and always will be in the interest of preserving what is left of their power and influence, which of course, always translates into money. And, they always take care of their friends. With their help, Yoseph Mengele died of old age in Argentina, instead of a prison cell.

I will say it again, the sexual abuse of catholic priests that has come to light is just the scum on a very deep pond. This while they claim to be the guardians of morality. No condoms, no birth control pills, but buttfucking alterboys is cool if you wear a black robe with a collar.

  27. elainek123 says:

They had a phone in on BBC.five live and one caller had the check to say they should not be punished but they willbe judged when they meet their’Maker’. Shows just how stupid some can be.
They read out my text ‘I am so mad as abuse of any child is evil whoever it is.’
Will these evil men get away with this or is the CHurch untouchable.
I hope when the Pope visits we will be able to question him face to face afterall he is only a man in a dress.

  28. The waves of accumulating scandal hitting the roman catholic church will look a mere trifle compared to the ‘perfect storm’ that is shortly coming. For these growing, worldwide sexual scandals and endemic institutional corruption, having destroyed virtually any remaining ‘moral’ authority or presumption to understand human nature, are just setting the stage for the ‘churches’ worst nightmare: the questioning of it’s very origins! And that has already begun on the web. Not by any atheist ravings, but with first wholly new interpretation for 2000 years of the Gospel/moral teachings of Christ. Redefining all primary elements including Faith, the Word, Law, Baptism, the Trinity and the Resurrection. This is not reformation but revolution. We may very well come to ‘remember’ the church as two thousands years of hubris, intellectual, theological self deception, retailing a counterfeit copy of revealed truth. Check it at: http://www.energon.org.uk

  29. Ron Cameron says:

If the Catholic Church would allow a priest to have open sexual relationships then young boys might be a lot safer but the Catholics enjoy their heads up their asses and refuse to change with the times. Get a grip you people you make the rest of Christianity look bad.
