EYEBROWS were raised – along with the collective fury of many Brits – when heir to the British throne Prince Charles this week exhorted the Western world to adopt Islamic principles in dealing with environmental issues.
Lecturing on “Islam and the Environment” at the Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford, on Wedsnesday, His Royal Barminess said that:

Prince Charles delivering his bone-headed lecture in Oxford this week
The Islamic world is a custodian … a priceless gift to the rest of world.
Oh really?
In an essay entitled Islam and Ecology, Marjorie Hope and James Young wrote:
Although many Muslims with whom we have talked are familiar with these broad Qur’anic principles, few see any need to move an ecological ethic to the center of their awareness.
True, some Muslims have become heads of national and international environmental organizations, but the average citizen is only vaguely aware of the extent of the crisis; most political and educational leaders perceive only a few of the problems, and those in isolation.
Moreover, many advance the common argument that ‘when we catch up with the technological superiority of the West, then we can begin to focus on this issue’. Not a few Muslims see environmentalism as still another form of Western control, intended to keep Islam from developing and Muslims from realizing their economic potential. Hence it is hardly surprising that, generally speaking, there is little discussion about actually applying Islamic principles to environmental practice.
Our future king blamed a lack of belief in the soul for environmental problems, and said that the planet will not be able to sustain a population likely to rise to 9 billion in 40 years.
He said that it was “baffling” that so many scientists claimed to have faith in God, and yet science was till used in a “damaging” way to exploit the natural world.

Charles audience were clearly riveted by his words of wisdom
Prince Charles even criticised the work of Galileo. Condemning the drive for profit behind scientific research, he said:
This imbalance, where mechanistic thinking is so predominant, goes back at least to Galileo’s assertion that there is nothing in nature but quantity and motion.
Charles, whose income last year was just over £19 million, also said:
We are clearly living beyond our means.
He argued that the current economic and environmental crisis is the result of a deeper crisis of the soul.
We need a recovery of the soul to the mainstream of our thinking. Only the sacred traditions have the capacity to do this.
Charles’ words – if comments posted under on-line reports of the lecture are anything to go by – sparked surprise, disbelief and outrage. Which, in itself, is surprising as his mad infatuation with the Religion of Peace goes back years.
For example, in 1996, the London Evening Standard, carried a story in which it was suggested by the Grand Mufti of Cyprus that the Prince had converted to Islam.
Did you know that Prince Charles has converted to Islam. Yes, yes. He is a Muslim. I can’t say more. But it happened in Turkey. Oh, yes, he converted all right. When you get home check on how often he travels to Turkey. You’ll find that your future king is a Muslim.
This, of course, was vehemently denied by Buck House officials.
The future Charles III, according to The Middle East Quarterly (September 1997) has made several strong public statements endorsing Islam as the solution to the spiritual and cultural ills of Britain and the West. His public advocacy of Islam appears to go back to 1989, when Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued an edict (fatwa) against Salman Rushdie, a British citizen, for blaspheming the Prophet Muhammad in his novel The Satanic Verses.
Rather than defend Rushdie’s freedom of speech, Charles reacted to the death decree by reflecting on the positive features that Islam has to offer the spiritually empty lives of his countrymen.
Charles first delivered a major address on Islam on October 27, 1993, at the Sheldonian Theatre at Oxford where he is a vice patron of the Centre for Islamic Studies. He declared that the usual attitude to Islam:
Suffers because the way we understand it has been hijacked by the extreme and the superficial. To many of us in the West, Islam is seen in terms of the tragic civil war in Lebanon, the killings and bombings perpetrated by extremist groups in the Middle East, and by what is commonly referred to as ‘Islamic fundamentalism’.
He then explained the causes for this distorted understanding:
Our judgement of Islam has been grossly distorted by taking the extremes to the norm. . . . For example, people in this country frequently argue that the Sharia law of the Islamic world is cruel, barbaric and unjust. Our newspapers, above all, love to peddle those unthinking prejudices. The truth is, of course, different and always more complex. My own understanding is that extremes, like the cutting off of hands, are rarely practised. The guiding principle and spirit of Islamic law, taken straight from the Qur’an, should be those of equity and compassion.
Charles suggested that European women may even find something to envy in the situation of their Muslim sisters:
Islamic countries like Turkey, Egypt and Syria gave women the vote as early as Europe did its women-and much earlier than in Switzerland! In those countries women have long enjoyed equal pay, and the opportunity to play a full working role in their societies.
Charles considers Christianity inadequate to the task of spiritual restoration and denigrates science for having caused the West to lose its spiritual moorings. Echoing a common Muslim theme, he declares that:
Western civilisation has become increasingly acquisitive and exploitive in defiance of our environmental responsibilities.
Instead, he praises the “Islamic revival” of the 1980s and portrays Islam as Britain’s salvation:
Islam can teach us today a way of understanding and living in the world which Christianity itself is poorer for having lost. At the heart of Islam is its preservation of an integral view of the Universe. Islam – like Buddhism and Hinduism – refuses to separate man and nature, religion and science, mind and matter, and has preserved a metaphysical and unified view of ourselves and the world around us. . . . But the West gradually lost this integrated vision of the world with Copernicus and Descartes and the coming of the scientific revolution. A comprehensive philosophy of nature is no longer part of our everyday beliefs.
He concludes by suggesting that:
There are things for us to learn in this system of belief which I suggest we ignore at our peril.
In a speech at the Foreign Office Conference Centre at Wilton Park in Sussex on December 13, 1996, he called on Islamic pedagogy and philosophy to help young Britons develop a healthier view of the world. Praising Islamic culture in its traditional form for trying to preserve an “integrated, spiritual view of the world in a way we have not seen fit to do in recent generations in the West,” he went on to say:
There is much we can learn from that Islamic world view in this respect. There are many ways in which mutual understanding and appreciation can be built. Perhaps, for instance, we could begin by having more Muslim teachers in British schools, or by encouraging exchanges of teachers. Everywhere in the world people want to learn English. But in the West, in turn, we need to be taught by Islamic teachers how to learn with our hearts, as well as our heads.
The results of this study will help Westerners:
To rethink, and for the better, our practical stewardship of man and his environment – in fields such as health-care, the natural environment and agriculture, as well as in architecture and urban planning.
In addition to these comments on Islam, Charles has taken steps to give that religion a special status. For example, he set up a panel of twelve “wise men” (in fact, eleven men and one woman) to advise him on Islamic religion and culture. This caused much talk, especially as the group was reported to have met in secret. Some noted that no comparable body exists to inform the crown prince about other faiths practiced in his future realm.
Some offices of the British government have found a practical use for the prince’s affection for Islam. In particular, the Foreign Office uses him as a point man for British business interests in Muslim countries, leading one journalist to comment that “the Charles of Arabia phenomenon is here to stay”, for it helps assure British commerce with the Muslim world.
Although some Britons may be bewildered at Prince Charles’s infatuation with Islam, he has become a hero among Muslims.
John Casey of Cambridge University, warned that the British public lacks a clear understanding of Charles’s standing in the Muslim world:
The extent to which the Prince is admired by Muslims – even to the point of hero-worship – has not yet sunk into the consciousness of the British public. When it does, that public may or may not be pleased.
Casey concludes that the prince of Wales’s “hero status” in the Arab world is permanent.
No other Western figure commands this sort of admiration.
Charles’ Muslim admirers can be generous in their gratitude. At a private dinner with prince Charles in May 1997, Prince Bandar bin Sultan of Saudi Arabia announced a donation by King Fahd of $33 million to Oxford University to construct a new Centre for Islamic Studies at Oxford, a gift designed “to establish Islamic studies at the heart of the British education system”.
The Middle East Quarterly‘s article concluded:
The denigration of the West at the expense of a foreign tradition that Charles engages in occurs quite commonly among the West’s intellectual elite. For some it is Islam, for others Tibetan Buddhism, Maoist thought, or American Indian spirituality. In all cases, the alien is assumed superior to the familiar. Arthur Schlesinger replies to this that there remains ‘a crucial difference between the Western tradition and the others. The crimes of the West have produced their own antidotes. They have provoked great movements to end slavery, to raise the status of women, to abolish torture, to combat racism, to defend freedom of inquiry and expression, to advance personal liberty and human rights.’
Should Charles persist in his admiration of Islam and defamation of his own culture, it could be, as The Independent puts it, that his accession to the throne will indeed usher in a ‘different kind of monarchy’.

Cause and effect I’d say. When you believe in a giant all-powerful being who won’t let you fuck up on a scale of global annihilation you stop worrying about fucking up on a scale of global annihilation.

“will not be able to sustain a population likely to rise to 9 billion in 40 years”
Did he also bother to mention who it was having more than the “replacement” level of children?
June 11th, 2010 at 10:17 am
Charles also wants “Defender of the Faith”, i.e. Church of England, to be “Defender of the Faiths”. An obvious move to try to secure his new religion’s stranglehold when the country should becoming more secular.
June 11th, 2010 at 10:17 am
So if you believe in a soul you won’t treat the environment like crap?
Uhmm… Lots of people still believe in souls. I would say a majority of people, even if not really religious, believe in stupid shit like souls. That obviously can’t be the reason for the poor treatment of our environment.
Oh, and Sharia law is cruel, barbaric and unjust.

well if this aint proof positive that this fuckwit aint fit to rule, then i dont know what is………

I have long regarded Charles Windsor as an ignorant, sanctimonious and hypocritical buffoon. This merely confirms that view. He is also dangerous as his opinions are listened to and he sticks his nose in when he is not wanted. This is a man who while whining about the environment is ready to see himself and his family swanning the planet of a Royal Yacht (now ended to much grief from his mother), using special trains and aircraft. He is a bad employer and ready to sell land when it suits him.
Then we have his “religious convictions” and devotion to the Church of England. Except, of course, when have bred with nubile Princess Diana he becomes very put out when he finds that she receives more attention than himself. Doesn’t like the fact that she recoils from the slaughter of wild animals. So, Di gets off loaded, famous phone call when he says he wants to be Camilla’s (said by friends to be the most idle woman in England) tampax, divorced Di and ties the know with Camilla. Camilla’s ex husband becomes the only non vetinerary surgeon to head up the army vetinerary service.
At his soirees those present are warned that Charlie boy, steeped in his own ignorance and vanity, does not like to be contracted. One episode involves him turning his back of a nobel prize winning scientist.
This man is a mess; a walking disaster; an enthusiast for daft New Age medicine he wants on the NHS. Treat him with the contempt he deserves.
June 11th, 2010 at 11:19 am
Moreover, many advance the common argument that ‘when we catch up with the technological superiority of the West, then we can begin to focus on this issue’.
I remember the Thatcherites voicing similar views to these: “Concentrate on making your profits first, and you will then be in a position to worry about the environment, and to put right any damage that you may have caused.” You can see the logic in their argument, but, sadly, the environment doesn’t work like that!
June 11th, 2010 at 11:57 am
Broga, I totally agree. This man is a complete and utter loon. If it wasn’t for his accident of birth, he would be unemployable. As it is, I think we should just ignore the ramblings of Mr. C. Windsor as he is a buffoon.
June 11th, 2010 at 12:00 pm
Well, considering his polygamous habits, it had to be either Islam or the Mormons, I suppose!
Of course, the royal family’s blitz of PR with wealthy Middle Eastern countries (see also Andy & trade missions to Saudi, Emirates this week becoming the world’s biggest purchaser of Airbuses, etc.) has nothing to do with flogging military and aviation hardware, has it?
Maybe just better to accept that he’s another lying, inbred shitbag who will do anything to preserve his useless existence, and then either laugh at or forget about him.
June 11th, 2010 at 12:11 pm
….”Islamic countries like Turkey, Egypt and Syria gave women the vote as early as Europe did its women-and much earlier than in Switzerland!”
At the time Syria was ruled by France, Egypt by Britain. Both societies had secular government as did Turkey under Ataturk when universal suffrage was introduced. However in nations with islamic governments women still do not have a vote. As for Switzerland is that relevant? Find the one really bad example and then say “see – we’re not as bad as those (fill in the blank)” – sounds like the same argument RCC PLC. has been using to defend their kiddie-fiddlers.
…..”My own understanding is that extremes, like the cutting off of hands, are rarely practised. The guiding principle and spirit of Islamic law, taken straight from the Qur’an, should be those of equity and compassion.”
So if “rarely practised” then not extreme and disgusting? This cutting off of hands is actually fairly common, esp. in Saudi Arabia….and this “equity and compassion”? where do you find that in islamic practice of sharia? Sharia is 7th century barbarism and needs to be condemned.
June 11th, 2010 at 12:30 pm
Lower your standards with these people, they’ve never been part of reality. Here in Holland we have a prince who married the daughter of an Argentine criminal (he was in Videla’s team while that ‘ruled’ Argentine, killing lots of undesirables) and we’re supposed to be happy about it. It’s all do as I say, not as I do: sanctimonious bull-shit on any subject, while jet-setting around the world and having the warmest of friendships with any kind of shady ruler.
June 11th, 2010 at 12:42 pm
I notice someone described old jug ears as a baffoon, surely you meant inbred, scrounging, parasite with a mental disorder. Jug ears obviously wants our freedoms taken away just as islam does, what a wanker, it really is a pity he has a son to take his place, another inbred, scrounging, parasite.
June 11th, 2010 at 12:54 pm
@Graham Martin-Royle. Another reason he is unemployable – he wouldn’t last an hour stacking shelves in a supermarket – is that he is seriously lazy. I recall an analysis of Charles Windsor a while back and he was found to “work” eight days a month. That work, of course, involves being transported around in splendour to shake a few hands. Servants run his bath, dance attendance and he is alleged to require a flunkey to put the paste on his toothbrush. Why this fool should be assumed to be adequate as a Head of State is beyond me. He has had a major row because his former paramour, now wife, was denied the title of Her Royal Highness. How immature and pointless can he get.
He wanted homeopathy and a range of daft New Age Treatments on the NHS. He, of course, does not rely on these and does not stand in line when he needs clinical treatment: this waster is straight to the top of the list. There is something for me particularly odious about this silly man. He lives in a fantasy world, separated from reality, and I guess he thinks he is a man of talent. His mum is currently trying to screw another £6 million from our taxes for the civil list.
When are we going to wake up? The muslim world Charles Windsor sees is a fairy tale version. He should take a look at muslim women being stoned to death (small pebbles only) for so called adultery; or nearer home have a look at some of the emergency cases in our hospitals (only the critical emerge) of baby girls with their clitorises sliced off by some muslim nutter (FGM).
June 11th, 2010 at 1:00 pm
When Charlie is not chatting to plants he is making pronouncements on subjects he doesn’t understand, probably due to the effects of his inbred ancestors and religion. I hope his Mum lives long enough to deny him the chance to be King.
June 11th, 2010 at 1:47 pm
Go on Charles!!!!
He’s a gift to republicans and disestablishmentarians alike
June 11th, 2010 at 2:09 pm
@rog Right! Charles and his freeloading family are well protected at the moment. We are supposed to live in a democracy – please, stop laughing at the back – and we can’t criticise the royals in Parliament. Brenda, aka Elizabeth Windsor, hands our titles and medals to her near kin the way Ratzinger creates saints. Imagine, she sticks an OBE or a “Sir” on someone and the love it. Meanwhile, her troup of layabout kids have so many high faluting titles the would fill a phone book.
Brenda, of course, is very religious and has a servant carrying around her kit of homeopathic junk. I don’t know if she has a lucky rabbit’s foot – probably shot by Camilla – as well. What I do know is that Brenda stated that only religion could solve the problems of the world in one of her speeches to her serfs (sorry, subjects.) (I seem to remember our esteemed editor being miffed by that.) This is fine for her, of course, as she is there at the behest of the great Fairy in the Sky.
June 11th, 2010 at 2:28 pm
Slobbering inbred chinless twat. If he wants to be a fucking Muslim he should go to Afghanistan and join the Taliban. I really object to having to subsidise this inbred dysfunctional family of vampires to the tune of £40 million per year.
How can anybody who married his horse be taken seriously
June 11th, 2010 at 2:41 pm
Clown.
We need a REPUBLIC.
June 11th, 2010 at 2:43 pm
Does anyone know what he does apart from slaughtering wildlife, pissing off the architecturial profession, really upsetting the doctors with his fuckwit theories so that patients try cure their cancer by homeopathy and leaving it too late to get clinical treatment when it would have helped, being a disastrous husband, hopeless parent, fantasist who thinks he knows every about everything when he is misguided and accepts the most arse licking sycophants on the planet to minister to his needs.
Rather reminds of the Duke of Windsor, great admirer of Hitler and useless playboy. When he got kicked out of the country by Churchill after shacking up with Mrs Simpson, they couldn’t find anything to occupy him. He didn’t want anything commensurate to his talents – sweeping the streets for example – and he was given a sinecure as governor of somewhere – Bahamas, I think. He was hopeless.
Charlie is hell bent on succeeding his mum. Thinks it is his destiny or whatever. Should be exciting. Muslim King.
The sad thing is that this pathetic man neither knows what he is saying or wants because he has lived on flattery and phony admires who keep telling him is a genius, great thinker, gift to the world. Charles: you are a fool.
June 11th, 2010 at 2:57 pm
Surely, this right old Charley should replace Bryan Fischer as loony of the week.
Bring on the Republic. Off with his head!
June 11th, 2010 at 3:14 pm
The Muslims must be pissing themselves laughing to think that people have been taken in like this!
June 11th, 2010 at 3:22 pm
Don’t hold back, Broga. Tell us what you REALLY think about Prince Charlie.
June 11th, 2010 at 4:23 pm
I did suggest, regarding Camilla’s honorary title, that as Prince Charles is The Heir Apparent, then she would surely be The Whore Apparent, but my words obviously fell on deaf ears!
June 11th, 2010 at 5:10 pm
Vivat Arnold!
June 11th, 2010 at 5:20 pm
@Barry Duke. Dear me, Barry, I couldn’t do that. There has to be some room for restraint in this sad world.
June 11th, 2010 at 5:26 pm
don’t forget that as a member of the pan-european royal family tree he can trace his ancestry right back to king david and therefore back to god. I guess that means he has to believe. If he didn’t then his only alternatives are that he himself doesn’t exist – nothing can come from nothing, right? Or that he’s just another monkey like the rest of us. Who’s up for a revolution?
June 11th, 2010 at 5:43 pm
@andrea. Well that’s the theory. But what’s the reality? They can’t trace their ancestery anywhere. Why? The royals males have always been infamously promiscuous and the women have a reputation also for “playing away from home.” When offering sex by an attractive woman, often someone’s wife, provides social and financial advantage the women are ready to cooperate. Particularly if being ostracised by the sad and bored aristos to whom being in the magic circle is felt important. Illegitimate children tended to end up as Dukes or whatever.
June 11th, 2010 at 6:41 pm
Prince Charles needs to do far more than study its holy writings to understand the nature of Islam. He needs to understand its history to see its track record in country after country. Cram all 1400 years free online anytime with the Historyscoper at http://go.to/islamhistory

Apparently, when Charlie did a stint in the RN (so he can insult real heroes by having a chestful of unearned medals) he couldn’t navigate and his mistakes were hushed up. He flounders about even today with his head up his arse. He’s no Prince of Wales, or even Welsh. I’ve never understood the mentality that must elevate other human beings to royal status. They’re all inbred parasites. If you’re looking for Uncle Dad or Mommy Sis, you’ll find them somewhere on the Windsor family tree. You may look down on chavs smoking, drinking, breeding and housed at the taxpayers expense, but are Liz et al any different?
June 12th, 2010 at 1:12 am
The passage on sharia is great – it’s exactly what Sholto Byrnes has been saying on The New Statesman blog for the past few days. Hey maybe the NS could get Chuck to write a column? That would be suitable! Having the future monarch telling people on the pages of the New Statesman to embrace Islam and sharia. The cognitive dissonance meters would be breaking all over the planet.
June 12th, 2010 at 1:51 am
What an excellent example of the term “useful idiot” or is it “useless idiot”? All HRH needs is a conical hat, some over-large shoes and an artificial flower that squirts water and the effect would be perfect.
June 12th, 2010 at 3:26 am
Prince Charles needs to live in a muslim country and see the way that the people treat the environment. Rubbish is thrown from car windows and dumped on the sides of roads. There is a joke that the national flower of Saudi Arabia is the blue plastic bag due to its proliferation in the desert. Their attitude is that they can have other people clean up after them so they do not bother.
The landscape is dotted with flare stacks that belch oil laden smoke across the whole of the horizon and looks reminiscent of the days when Saddam set the oilfields of Kuwait on fire.
Prince Charles is a prat who is unfit to take the place as head of any country. He views science as evil and has no knowlege of any thing that he pontificates about in public. At least his father is good for a laugh when he puts his foot in his mouth prince Charles is just pathetic.
June 13th, 2010 at 1:27 pm
I love the bored expressions on the faces of Charlie’s audience. It reminds me of the lecture by John Cleese’s schoolmaster character in Monty Python’s Meaning of Life,
“I’m afraid some boys have been caught rubbing linseed oil into the school cormorant”.

@faz
i think you need some of chazs magic medicine.
The states trick of hiding the publics contempt for chaz is a deft feat, the so called publics acceptance of Camilla is more ‘we couldn’t care less about chaz or his bloody horse’ i personally have never met anyone who likes him. Unfortunately hes destined to become the worst monarch in history (and we’ve had quite a few useless fops), hes incredibly stupid, has no common touch and couldn’t lead a horse to water. Unless he keeps his trap shut we’ll be a republic within a decade of Brenda passing, thank god for William who seems reasonably sane and intelligent.
