Sparks fly as fundies clash

A FEW weeks back, an episode of American Dad on BBC3 TV featured an attempt by the main character, Stan, to be a speaker at a Republican convention. When he is cold-shouldered, the diehard homophobe finds himself accepted instead by the local chapter of the Gay Republicans – with hilarious consequences.

Funnier still is the real-life row that’s erupted between two leading Christian nutters in the US – right-wing writer and commentator Ann Coulter and WorldNetDaily editor Joseph Farah over precisely the same issue: gay wingnuts.

Coulter called Farah a  ”swine” and a “publicity whore” after she was dismissed as a keynote speaker at WND’s upcoming Taking America Back National Conference.

Coulter was ditched because of her plan to address a gathering titled Homocon sponsored by the homosexual Republican group GOProud, which promotes same-sex marriage and military service for openly-gay people.

Farah said the decision was a gut-wrenching one for his team because of their fondness for Coulter as both a person and writer-speaker.

Ultimately, as a matter of principle, it would not make sense for us to have Ann speak to a conference about ‘taking America back’ when she clearly does not recognize that the ideals to be espoused there simply do not include the radical and very ‘unconservative’ agenda represented by GOProud.

The drift of the conservative movement to a brand of materialistic libertarianism is one of the main reasons we planned this conference from the beginning.

Farah added:

Ann is angry. I hope she calms down and there can be some restoration, repentance and forgiveness. She said some mean things about me, but I can sleep at night knowing I did the right thing in God’s economy.

This was all too much for P Z Myers, who described Coulter as a “crazy flaming psycho goon”, and asked:

God’s economy? What does that mean? I’d love to know exactly how his god is carrying out his economic plans. Does this mean god is an atheist, because he seems to be shipping our economy overseas to China?

Quick too to join the fray was 22-carat lunatic Peter LaBarbera, founder of Americans for Truth, a “national organization devoted exclusively to exposing and countering the homosexual activist agenda”. “Barbara” squealed:

As a fan of Ann Coulter, it pains me to see her cave into political correctness and lend credibility to the phony homosexual ‘conservatives’ over at GOProud.

Christopher Barron, chairman of GOProud, issued a statement about Coulter’s appearance at his event:

We did not invite Ann Coulter to speak at Homocon 2010 because we believe she has ‘evolved.’ Quite the contrary, we invited Ann Coulter because of who she is, who she has been, and who we know she will continue to be – the smartest, funniest, most provocative conservative author and columnist around. If anyone needs to evolve, it’s the uber-PC gay left and their enablers, not Ann Coulter.
