Fanatic jailed for the attempted murder of Danish cartoonist Kurt Westergaard

MOHAMED Geele, the Muslim fanatic who tried to kill Danish cartoonist Kurt Westergaard last year, was today jailed for nine years after he was found guilty of attempted terrorism and attempted murder.

Judge Ingrid Thorsboe, presiding over the trial of the 29-year-old Somali in the central Danish city of Aarhus said:

Mohamed Geele is sentenced to nine years in prison and expulsion from Denmark for life.

According to this report, the judge also ordered Geele to pay damages amounting to 10,000 Danish kroner (around £1,100) to Westergaard, as well as the costs of the trial.

The court had earlier found Geele guilty of attempted terrorism and attempted murder for his 2010 New Years Day attack on the 75-year-old cartoonist.

Prosecutors had requested he serve 12 years in prison before being deported back to his war-torn homeland and banned from ever returning to Denmark, while the defence asked that he only serve six years and not be forced to leave the country.

Geele broke into Westergaard’s home last year wielding an axe and screaming:

You must die! You are going to Hell!

Westergaard, who has faced numerous death threats since the publication of his drawing of Mohammed with a bomb in his turban in the Danish daily Jyllands-Posten in 2005, said he escaped “certain death” by rushing into a bathroom-turned-panic-room to call police.

A CCN report revealed that Danish intelligence officials had linked Geele to an East African Islamist militia allied with al Qaeda.

Kurt Westergaard narrowly escaped death

At a January 2010 news conference in the Somali capital of Mogadishu, al-Shabaab spokesman Sheikh Ali Mohamud Rage said:

We are very happy with the Somali national who attacked the house of the Danish cartoonist who previously insulted our prophet Mohammed. This is an honor for the Somali people. We are telling that we are glad that anyone who insults Islam should be attacked wherever they are.

The cartoonist has said he wanted his controversial drawing of Mohammed to show that some people exploited the prophet to legitimize terrorism. But many in the Muslim world interpreted the drawing as depicting their prophet as a terrorist.

Justice is so sweet …when it is just.

How silly a situation ….a trial for a man convicted of attempted murder for feeling hurt over cartoons about his imaginary friend.

Would that the Danish justice system be put to better use than to deal with lunatics.

You call him a fanatic, some might call him the logical extension of his belief system. Unfortunately if anyone wants to actually be any good at following any of the Abrahamic faiths, they have to be pretty bloodthirsty and willing to kill people over the smallest of offences. Perhaps it is time people stopped hand wringing over the extremists and fanatics and started looking at where these people get the idea that harming others is a holy and noble pursuit. I’ll give you a hint – it’s the same book you pore over on your particular holy day before giving yourself a pat on the back for being a ‘good person’.

I expect the cartoonist who drew the person who tried to kill the person who drew Mohammed will get killed next.

Am I seeing things, or has Geele trimmed his beard? What’s the punishment for THAT crime I wonder!

Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani Thursday said that Islam is the religion of peace and tolerance which teaches its followers to respect all religions of the world…

I don’t recall the artist, but AA published a painting, very detailed, and professionally finished, of Muhammed butt fucking a goat. Hilarious!!! I’d say that trumps a bomb turbin.

In America, attempted murder is treated in nearly every state, as being the same as murder, the intent being relevent, the outcome is not. Premeditated murder is life in prison, or the dirt nap in some states. Add to that, the religious motivation makes it a hate crime which stiffens minimum penalties. But, I guess you can’t kill them twice, unless you follow them to heaven and interrupt their wedding night with their seventy virgins.

Bottom line, in America, that asshole would never see freedom again, and quite possibly would meet Allah ahead of his destiny.

Nine years of your life, gone, has to give you pause. Plenty of time to think about your priorities. I hope the asshole appreciates how lucky he is.

    Bjohn,

I read the article at the link about Gilani. Isn’t it convenient when politicians and clerics can spew their spin without answering the tough questions? For whatever reason he is not quoted, yet paraphased (another political cushion) but the article states:

“He said that Islam was not spread by force rather the message was disseminated through the policy of religious tolerance of Sufis and Aulia Allah.”

Well, there’s a rack of bullshit!! Islam was spread into Europe by the Ottoman Empire and the Moors, by the edge of a sword. After the failure of the Crusades, again by the sword, Palestine became muslim because it was settled by Turks and Persians.

Another quote: “Unfortunately, Islam and Muslims are being bracketed with extremism and sectarianism which is an attempt to tarnish the image of Muslim Ummah.”

Uh, duh! Extremism, Al Qaeda and it’s branches. Somalia and it’s pirates. Sectarianism, Iraqi and Pakistani muslims killing each other over different views of how the holy prophet intended to will his festering cancer to his followers. Religious tolerence??? Doubting the clerics is a capital offense, and muslims and christians are getting along swimmingly in India.

One more quote: “The Prime Minister stressed upon the need for dialogue among all segments to solve national issues including religious extremism.”

I guess when religious extremism is the law of the the land, the national issues are solved.

    @ Anonymous,
thanks for the link, I just posted the following,
“Why should she have to change her name, address, go into hiding. The idiots who call for her death should be the ones running scared, not her.”

@Newspaniard – obviously I am using the colloquial collective ‘you’ which isn’t actually addressed to you, or most readers of this website. Not great English, I know, but I was a bit annoyed at the time.
