AMERICA stands on the brink of collapse – not because of the avarice of US banks which played a key role in precipitating the global economic crisis, nor through the insane cost of the “War on Terror” which is expected soon to top more than $4-trillion.
Nope. America is in imminent danger of falling prey to the Antichrist – and subsequent “disgrace” – because New York voted to allow gay marriage.

Rev Bresciani, with his signature roadkill skull-topper
That’s the view of lunatic “prophet” Rev Michael Bresciani, with whom we crossed swords back in 2009, after he excoriated Barack Obama for proclaiming June LGBT Month in celebration of America’s lesbian, bi-sexual, gay and transgendered community.
He took particular exception to us labeling him:
An inbecile AND a fascist.
Now, writing (badly) for Renew America, the ghastly old homophobe rants:
The Israelites knew God had strictly forbidden homosexuality so the idea of trying to sanctify what God called an ‘abomination’ with marriage would be doubly offensive. Today we flaunt it among our notables as a perfectly normal bit of nascent social ethics. In fact we are very close to tempting God with our worst behavior and defying him to enter into judgment with us. This is dangerous territory …
The condensed version of the pattern God uses is this; A call to repentance, a graduating scale of calamities, natural disasters and disruption of nature, a collapse of the powers and the economy of a nation. Need I remind anyone that America is already in stage three of this pattern? After this it gets far more serious, what exactly does that mean? My answer is both; you don’t really want to know and stay tuned there is more to come.
He then declares:
I don’t need science to confirm my predictions … Suffice it to say that in my own calling not one revelation in some forty years has ever come up wrong. In real prophecy there is nothing to prove. Being right is not the purpose of prophets but reaching others before they go wrong has always been the urgent and most pressing purpose in any prophetic calling.
For those with a modicum of moral fiber left to them; the sense of shame and disgrace has already begun. Yes, if we do not turn away from these openly sinful social trends that fly in God’s face, disgrace will surely overtake us.
Bresciani’s warning was parroted by the equally loopy Pat Robertson, who said on his The 700 Club that God would destroy America just like God destroyed Sodom. He warned that:
There’s never been a civilization ever in history that has embraced homosexuality and turned away from traditional fidelity, traditional marriage, traditional child-rearing, and has survived.

Hurricane Katrina? That’s the only one I can think of.
2000 people died. That’s rough on them – but hardly a disaster on the scale of the Indonesian Tsunami.
And what was “God” at in Japan. Wipe out Japan to get at the Americans – now that’s a whole new level of passive aggressive.
The United States is relatively disaster free – and it’s just posturing to suggest otherwise.

Pat Robertson: “There’s never been a civilization ever in history that has embraced homosexuality and turned away from traditional fidelity, traditional marriage, traditional child-rearing, and has survived.”
You can cut out the middle bit. There’s never been a civilization ever in history that … has survived. Nothing lasts forever. Blaming it on whatever is like people banging pots and pans to bring the sun back after an eclipse … it works every time!
Superstition is so much easier than science.

WTF is it with religious nutters and homosexuality? As far as I’m aware, ‘keeping the Sabbath’ is mentioned way more often than homosexuality, yet very few of ‘em seem to have a problem with Sunday trading. I’m sure a little thought could provide a lot more common transgressions of various things.
Oh and Pat Robinson, Sodom was not destroyed because of ‘teh geyz’:
Nope, the cities were destroyed because of, erm… people like Pat Robertson.
June 30th, 2011 at 10:51 am
Even reading the account in Genesis, it is obvious that the story of Sodom is an old one that was “got at” and made to say something completely different to what was originally intended. So much for “truth”.
Bresciani has a fascinating website, if you have a few hours to while away – there seems nothing upon which he doesn’t have an opinion!

I say we let he and his sheep fade into eternity— as they will. No sweat.

So how come the celestial wizard isn’t smiting all those other countries that allow gay marriage?
June 30th, 2011 at 11:37 am
If Bresciani wants to know what a real homosexuality-based disgrace looks like, he should try reading this.

If superstitious nutters can claim tax relief by registering a religious organisation as a charity, maybe it’s time for a new tax category for the groups that need to exist to counter such bollocks.
We could call ourselves Not-For-Prophet organisations.

“There’s never been a civilization ever in history that has embraced homosexuality and turned away from traditional fidelity, traditional marriage, traditional child-rearing, and has survived.”
The Catholic Church has practiced homosexuality with young boys for centuries and seems to have done just fine in terms of…. longevity while steeped in what it calls sinful conduct.
A bit of the pot calling the kettle black.
June 30th, 2011 at 12:34 pm
Pat Robertson can’t produce a single shred of evidence for that ludicrous statement. The great civilizations of the past have flourished and then faded for numerous reasons, and homosexual behaviour was NOT a factor. I would like to challenge him to produce an example of one civilization that “embraced homosexuality” and then suddenly collapsed!
June 30th, 2011 at 1:04 pm
“….not one revelation in some forty years has ever come up wrong” yeah right, evidence? Thought not. Those who are virulent homophobes often turn out to be repressed homosexuals; I wonder if….
Stuart H. That’s an old one. Atheism: a non prophet organisation.

“I don’t need science to confirm my predictions”
Well, if I were science, I’d cancel out your immune system. Or how about all those other systems that *evolved*.
In the case of this particular idiot, the only system that seems to have failed, despite nature’s best efforts, is the one that occupies space above the shoulders.
In the Gay Friendly US State of Massachusetts, first in the nation to provide this basic human right and equality, we note that marriage and families have not fallen apart, evidenced especially by our rate of divorce which is one of the lowest in the nation. If the “reverend” resides within one of the more bible-friendly territories, he may note the rate of divorce is almost consistently high.
If he can read.

You’re not wrong there barriejohn. The Romans indulged in all sorts of ‘sinful’ practices; homosexuality, polytheism, incest, orgies etc. And their civilisation flourished for over a thousand years. It was only when they adopted Christianity that the empire went tits up.
June 30th, 2011 at 4:01 pm
Mad though these Christian homophobes may be, they pale in comparison with the Muslim crazies who have been executing gays by the thousand in “Islamic law” countries like Saudi Arabia and Iran.
But don’t try to point out facts like this in Guardian Cif Belief. Posters here who are used to seeing me in Cif Belief will appreciate that the reason I’m no longer posting there is because I’ve been banned, for criticising Islam for its atrocities.
I suspect the Guardian is now Saudi-owned. But if not, it might as well be.

And what will be his excuse when no divine vengeance is suffered upon us?
June 30th, 2011 at 5:20 pm
Paul: Like “The Rapture”, it will always be “imminent”. Don’t forget, not one of his prophecies has actually failed in forty years!
June 30th, 2011 at 5:52 pm
Why do you even bother to refer to these assholes as reverend So and So. We need to invent a new title for these idiots. It’s as ludicrous as referring to Rasinger as Holy Father or His Holiness!|

As far as I am aware, Hurricane Katrina was a fairly regular storm, the problem was that the sea defences were poorly maintained. I believe that various authorities in the US had been repeatedly warned that one decent hurricane in the area would cause widespread devastation unless the sea defences were sorted out.
When I read the Bible, one thing that struck me was the very limited and parochial worldview of both the writers and their god. Bresciani is no different in that his god is supposed to rule the entire universe but is obsessively concerned with how one little country on one little planet treats gay people. He even appears to be unaware that European countries have been legalising gay marriage too. Why is he not threatening Europe with God’s wrath? The good news is, of course, that all this blustering is because his side are losing. Little by little, the world is leaving the likes of him and his bronze age barbarism behind.

Speaking of drama queens, the Chief Rabbi has just told Parliament that UK equality laws are leading to new Mayflower exodus (!) with religious people forced to flee the country because they are being denied the freedom to discriminate against whoever they like ie. teh gheys:

As much as I am not looking for a conspiracy theory, I too have had Cif comments deleted which referenced the tenets of Islam.
Bubblecar, you were a poster I admired there, but “I suspect the Guardian is now Saudi-owned” is below you. I do understand your frustration, however. It’s nice to have you here.
Regarding the nut in this post, I’m pleased to say I’ve never heard of him.

The condensed version of the pattern God uses is this; A call to repentance, a graduating scale of calamities, natural disasters and disruption of nature, a collapse of the powers and the economy of a nation.
You gotta wonder why this “God” character doesn’t just come right out and say what he wants us to do. I mean, he’s omnipotent and all, why doesn’t he find some way to get his moral message across? He should know by now that we just don’t believe these people who claim they speak for him. Any normal intelligent being would surely have come up with some better tactics by now!

DPD: As I have said before, I have personal experience going back to the 1950s of evangelical preachers producing incontrovertible statistics that demonstrated beyond all doubt that natural disasters were on the increase, and stating that this presaged the IMMINENT return of “Jesus Christ”. I’d just love to know what all these “unfailing prophecies” are that Bresciani has been making over the years, because my guess is that they are all in the same vein!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; homosexuals must be the most powerful people on earth. If they can cause biblical-scale disaster and the collapse of civilization simply by having gay sex and gay marriages, they are truly a force to be feared.
July 1st, 2011 at 12:05 pm
@Ivan: The more who leave the better. The Chief Rabbi is also upset because he objects to the move to have animals stunned before having their throats slit. A cruel practice he supports. I hope he joins the exodus. One ancillary benefit is that we would be spared his oily and patronising Thought for the Day efforts.

DPG
Totally agree, but…
These people do not have morals. They have instructions which they (claim to) follow, in hopes of gaining heaven/avoiding hell. Not the same thing at all.
July 1st, 2011 at 2:04 pm
Daz: He was referring to “God”. Still no “moral message” in the Bible though, apart from a few platitudes that we miserable unbelievers are supposed to stand in awe of!
PS I should have referred to DPG in my previous comment, not DPD.

Oops, yes. Sorry DPG, dunno how I misread you the first time.
July 1st, 2011 at 4:38 pm
@barriejohn: How about this for christian morals? By chance the book “Seminary Boy” by John Cornwell ended up with me. I started reading and was fascinated by the indoctrination, or perhaps terrifying into belief, of RC children in the first few chapters, which is all I have read so far. These relate to the 1940′s. The episode that really caught my interest was when the young boy turns up at school and finds that a nun has stuck a picture on the wall. This shows naked people being roasted on red hot coals. The children are left in no doubt that this is what happens to sinners and the torture is forever.
It struck me that in order to enforce what the RCs judge as morality they, and their god, are immoral to an infinite degree.
