KORANS tend to get overworked in pious places like Pakistan. So much so that they sometimes fall apart, in which case they must be disposed of in an Islamically correct manner: by casting them in flowing water, burying them in the ground, or by burning, if the first two options aren’t possible.

Burning a Koran is permissible under certain circumstances
Well, devout Muslim student Junaid Ahmed, 20, who attended a seminary attached to Imdadia Mosque on Rawalpindi Road in Chakwal, chose the latter, as a well designed to hold discarded bits of the Koran was already full.
The student is now languishing in Pakistani prison, following his arrest for blasphemy.
He was, according to this report, spotted burning pages of the book by some vile little snitch called Akhtar Nisar. He raised “a hue and cry”, as a result of which Ahmed was tortured by a crowd that had gathered. He kept pleading that he was burning the holy pages to protect them from desecration after getting permission from a teacher, but the crowd refused to listen to him.
After his arrest, the student told a court that he was a devout Muslim and could never think of desecrating the “holy” book. Â He was then committed to prison to await formal charges.
The student said:
Had I known that this act could be considered as a blasphemy I would never have done it.
Mufti Rehman is quoted as saying:
Junaid could not even think of blaspheming the holy book, which he used to recite passionately and devotedly. He said sharia permitted burning the torn pages of Quran to save them from desecration. We will fight the case in the court and I hope we will get justice.
When contacted, complainant Akhtar said:
I have heard from Qazi Lateef (a cleric) who received his religious education from India that burning the torn pages of Quran is blasphemy.
There is an interesting opinion piece on the subject of blasphemy in Pakistan here.

Just plain stupid. Can’t even follow their own rules in their thirst to be offended and have someone punished.

Cast it in flowing water…
Good to know I was not blasphemous, when I flushed that quran down the toilet;)

In their quest to out-devote each other, the religious turn on each other. The only way to avoid serious trouble with a co-religionist in some parts of the world is by denouncing the other first.

I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. This goes to show that there is no point in acceding to the wishes of those islamists who insist that we who are not muslims should also have to abide by their rules when it comes to respecting their holey books, prophets, customs, etc. If they can’t decide among themselves just what the correct procedures should be, why on earth should we even waste our time thinking about how we should treat these things?

Would it help at all to point out to these idiots that worshipping a book constitutes idolotry?

The only thing that stops me from burning a koran is the lack of one to burn. I feel like im missing something…..in my fireplace.

WTF?! The koran is an arrangement of words that tell a lie that’s printed on a few sheets of paper. But what the feck, let’s just torture somebody for not disposing of it ‘correctly’! These idiots really are morally bankrupt.

It’ll be the printers next, I bet they have teams of proof readers going over every last inch to make sure nothing is wrong.

Ah, the differences in dogma that come from Islam’s lack of an ultimate earthly authority. What the poor things need is a pope.
