Profit takes precedence over prudery: porn-again Mitt is a Marriott man once more

Mitt Romney

MARRIOTT International, Inc, is a hotel chain owned by devout Mormons. Check into one of its rooms and you’re likely to get both the “holy” Bible and The Book of Mormon. But if neither of these appeal, there’s always pay-to-view porn.

Mitt Romney was on the Marriott board, but resigned in 2011 when he decided he was better placed in the White House as US President.

And, given the fact that he had earlier come under fire from Christian zealots for his involvement with a company that made porn available in its hotel rooms, he obviously didn’t want the spectre of smut to sully his campaign.

But now that he’s been thrown back into the pond of bog-standard American multi-billionaire politicians, Romney was more than happy to rejoin the board a couple of days ago.

Questioned back in 2007 as to why the hotel chain continues to offer adult pay-per-view channels to its guests, he said:

I am not pursuing an effort to try and stop adults from being able to acquire or see things that I find objectionable; that’s their right. But I do vehemently oppose practices or business procedures that will allow kids to be exposed to obscenity.

According to Christian News, company spokesman Roger Conner remarked that although “conservative groups” were urging Romney to stop the sale of porn at the hotel chain, he would not be allowed to do so because it would adversely affect Marriott profits.

Mitt Romney, –  full name is Willard Mitt Romney – was named after the founder of the company, John Willard Marriott. The Marriotts are devout Mormons, and have been friends with the Romney family for decades.

CEO J W “Bill” Marriott, Jr, said in a statement this week:

We are delighted that Governor Romney has agreed to rejoin our board, on which he has served with distinction twice before.

In September Marriott Jr applauded Romney for helping to increase the acceptance of Mormonism to the nation.

He also told Bill Johnson, Executive Director of the Michigan-based evangelical American Decency Association that adult pay-per-view channels are a part of a movie package offered by entertainment providers, and that the two cannot be separated:

The in-room entertainment operators who provide our systems rely upon a certain volume of movie types in order to be economically viable. If we were to eliminate the ‘R’ and non-rated offerings, the systems would not be economic.

Focus on the Family’s Daniel Weiss had also criticised Romney for not taking a stand against porn as a board member, but the lunatic’s ministry backed the Republican candidate during the 2012 presidential election.

Weiss asked:

If [Romney] made money off pornography in the past, is he going to turn a blind eye to it if he’s President? Because as chief executive of the nation, it’s his responsibility to make sure our nation’s obscenity laws are efficiently and vigorously enforced.

Pornography is said to be a lucrative business in the hotel industry, and while estimates vary, it is stated that collectively $500 million is banked each year by hotel chains nationwide.

Mitt Romney is reported to have earned $25,000 annually plus stock for his role on Marriott’s board of directors when he served in the 1990s.

When J W Marriott’s office was asked how the company reconciles offering both the Book of Mormon and hardcore pornography to its guests, an administrative assistant who identified herself as Janet stated that she was unable to answer any questions.

But when pornography – kiddy porn at that – is found on a priest’s computer, it isn’t porn at all, according to defender of the Catholic faith, Bill Donohue.

Donohue argued, as he has before, that what was discovered on Rev Shawn Ratigan’s computer in Kansas City wasn’t porn at all.

Bishop Robert Finn, left, and Shawn Ratigan

A series of photos on the priest’s computer showed a little girl, face visible, standing and holding a blanket. In a “staged sequence,” the photos depicted a girl lying in a bed, from the waist down, and focused on the crotch. The girl was wearing a diaper, but with each photo, the diaper was moved gradually to expose her genitals. By the last photo, her genitals were fully exposed. The little girl’s face was not visible in the staged sequence, but due to her apparent physical size and the fact that the photos were in the same folder, it was assumed the photos were of the same little girl whose face appeared in the initial picture.

As a result of the discovery, Bishop Robert Finn, 59, was found guilty of failing to alert authorities to the Ratigan’s stash of kiddy porn.
