This just sucks!

Two more infants have been infected with herpes following mouth-to-penis circumcision rites

BOTH the New York infant boys are believed to have contracted the disease following metzitzah b’peh, an ultra-Orthodox Jewish ritual in which the circumciser places his lips on the infant’s penis to suction blood from the circumcision wound.

But despite warnings issued by health authorities after similar cases – two of them fatal – had occurred in the past, ultra-Orthodox groups insist that MBP is safe and many circumcisers (mohels) refuse to comply with a regulation that forced mohels to get written consent from parents before performing the rite.

Since 2000, 16 infants in New York City are suspected of contracting herpes following MBP. Two of those babies died and at least two others suffered brain damage.

In the first of the newest cases reported in an alert issued by the New York City Department of Health , the baby had pustular lesions on the penis and genital area. He tested positive for herpes and was admitted to hospital for intravenous treatment.

In the second case, the baby developed lesions on his penis, thigh, and foot. The health alert did not say how the baby’s symptoms were treated.

The alert stated that both cases were consistent with transmission of herpes:

During direct contact between the mouth of the ritual circumciser and the newly circumcised infant penis.

The city’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has tried to warn parents of the risks of MBP, which is particularly prevalent among the city’s ultra-Orthodox Jews.

In January, 2013, the city instituted a regulation that forced mohels to get written consent from parents, but  since the regulation was enforced, four infants have contracted the disease.

Meanwhile, we have just learned that an Alabama man who went in to a hospital last month for a circumcision is claiming that when he awoke after surgery he found his penis had been amputated.

Johnny Lee Banks Jr, 56, said in a lawsuit filed in state court earlier this week that no one at the Princeton Baptist Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama, had told him why it had been necessary to remove his penis. Said Banks’ attorney John Graves:

My client is devastated.

Banks, who is married and does not work due to a disability, did not recall the precise date of the incident but believed it occurred in June, his attorney said.

A spokeswoman for the hospital’s parent company said in a statement that Banks’ allegations were without merit.

Kate DeWitt Dardes, spokeswoman for Baptist Health System:

We intend to defend all counts aggressively.

The lawsuit does not specify a monetary value of the damages.

Named as defendants in the lawsuit are the hospital, the Simon-Williamson Clinic, Urology Centers of Alabama and two doctors, Graves said.

Representatives for the Simon-Williamson Clinic and the Urology Centers of Alabama did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

  1. If FGM is illegal, why isn’t male infant circumcision. Both are child abuse.

  2. Michael Glass says:

Mohels might defy the laws and regulations against metzitzah b’peh but they can do nothing to stop a tsunami of condemnation of this practice. Publicity, publicity, publicity is what is needed. All baby care books should carry warnings about the danger of MBP. All doctors should be alerted to the dangers of this practice and be urged to be on the lookout for suspicious lesions on Jewish infants.

Jewish parents should be urged to say no to metzitzah b’peh. To make it easier for them to avoid this danger to their child there should be a register of mohels who refuse to practice MBP. The list should be widely published and people will soon twig to the mohels who’ll suck. This will put pressure on the recalcitrants to change their ways.

Trying to ban the practice will turn mohel suckers into martyrs; feeding the suckers to the tabloid press should be far more effective.

Primitive, barbaric, deviant … abomination. Child abuse writ large.

  5. Broga says:

The spectators seem passive and unconcerned as they look on the torture of a baby screaming in agony. Would a group of atheists stand by saying and doing nothing as a baby is tortured and possibly being lethally infected? Or is it the peculiar role of religion and those indoctrinated by it that allows this kind of abomination?

  6. Graham Martin-Royle says:

Not only is it abhorrent to mutilate a childs genitals in the first place, for an adult to suck a babies genitals (especially for religious reasons, we’ve seen where that leads to) is just disgusting and perverted.

  7. barriejohn says:

Only religion is able to get away with this sort of thing.

  8. Angela_K says:

Barriejohn, I agree. In any other circumstance the perpetrators of this barbaric and perverted act would be locked up with the other nonces but no, again it is religion with its get/stay out jail free card.

  9. Mephisto says:

That’s a picture of a man with a child’s penis in his mouth. How fucked up is society that his can be in any way deemed acceptable?

  11. AgentCormac says:

Totally agree with your observations. How can these idiots just look on as a baby is not only disfigured and harmed but also defiled? The fact that these kinds of of archaic rituals are still allowed in the 21st century is simply horrendous.

As I will never tire of saying, if this was anything other than a religion these people would be in prison.

  12. Neutral Axis says:

Ask the smooth talking ex boss rabid J Sachs whether or not he agrees with this disgusting, barbaric, primitive sickening perversion.

  13. 1859 says:

This is probably one of the most perverse and disgusting things that any religion can do. How they can possibly justify this revolting practice on ‘spiritual’ grounds is beyond me. How do they think some god in the sky is going to be ‘honoured’ by cutting off a baby’s foreskin and sucking its blood. They may as well be fucking vampires! It nauseates me so much it inclines me to bomb every single synagogue, every single church, every single mosque in the whole goddam world!!!

  14. Robster says:

Yuk yuk yuk. Is this kind of carry on the reason the muzzies have such a hate for the jews? On the other hand, the muzzies seem to love disfiguring those unlucky enough to have been born as an islamic female, yet jewish people don’t dislike the muzzies as much as the muzzies dislike the jews. Go figure…

  16. Matt Westwood says:

“Jewish parents should be urged to say no to metzitzah b’peh.” No, the practice ought to be made illegal. No question about it.

  17. This is extremely disturbing and utterly foul. Unfortunately, politicians fight shy of criticising these and other barbaric rituals, for fear of offending the highly influential and well-organised client religious groups they feel they depend on. Secularists should be doing much more to publicise and raise objections to religious circumcision and religious animal slaughter, yet leading secular organisations also fight shy of challenging these rituals – why is that, I wonder?
