Forced marriage: Welsh Muslim jailed

A 34-year-old Cardiff Muslim, described by a judge as  an ‘arrogant, manipulative and devious man’, has become the first person in the UK to be prosecuted under forced marriage laws introduced a year ago.

According to the BBC, the man, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, was jailed for 16 years after admitting making a 25-year-old woman marry him under duress last year.

He also pleaded guilty to charges of rape, bigamy and voyeurism at Merthyr Crown Court.

The court heard he threatened to kill her father unless she married him.

He was sentenced to four years for the forced marriage, 12 months for bigamy and 12 months for voyeurism to run concurrently with the 16-year rape sentence.

The court heard he became obsessed with the woman, a devout Muslim, and threatened to reveal videos he had secretly filmed of her in the shower and kill members of her family if she told anyone.

He had pleaded guilty on the second day of his trial, with the judge saying:

To the bitter end you sought to exert control over her, no doubt in the hope she would not go through with her allegations.

The judge said the offences began when the woman became engaged last year to another man. In March of last year the defendant took her to his house under the pretence of having a meal with his wife.

The judge said:

Your house was empty, you locked the front door and drew the curtains, you ignored her pleas to let her go and threw her mobile phone away and bound and gagged her with scarves belonging to your wife.

You tied her hands behind her back, she was bruised by the ties and she couldn’t breathe. She almost passed out and then you raped her.

She was a virgin, something which you knew and something which you used to ensure her silence. You took her innocence to ensure her silence.

The court heard he later pretended to be her fiancé on Facebook and when she disclosed the rape online, sought to persuade her to take the matter no further.

Less than a month later, he contacted her asking her forgiveness and then raped her.

The judge the defendant he told his  victim she was to be his wife and took her to a mosque, continuing his threats to kill members of her family and reveal the videos if she did not comply.

After the hearing, Det Supt Lian Penhale from South Wales Police praised the woman’s “courage and strength” to come forward. She said she hoped the case would “empower” others to come forward.

Iwan Jenkins, head of CPS Wales Rape and Serious Sexual Offences Unit, said:

Forced marriage wrecks lives and destroys families. We hope that today’s sentence sends a strong message that forced marriage will not be tolerated in today’s Britain.

The sentence is welcome. Too often, you might say invariably, the abuse of a victim by the abuser is accepted under the aegis of religion. Every day young Muslim girls are terrorised or tricked into forced marriages and condemned to a life of domestic and sexual servitude.

Their partners are often much older men lusting after young women and being given them by complicit and ignorant relatives. When will a similar sentence be given for FGM, that other horror of the Muslim culture?

Sorry to go OT, but the BBC is just reporting that Frankie has decided to set up a tribunal to hear cases of bishops accused of covering up child abuse by paedophile priests.

A positive move, some may say. I would say, why aren’t you handing them over to the police?

Arrogant? No – just doing what his god very conveniently told him to do:

So the girl has come forward and her rapist has been sent to jail.

When will her family kill her for bringing dishonour on them?

  5. Broga says:

AgentCormac: “The tribunal will have the power to punish bishops who failed to protect young victims.”

I wonder how that power will be exercised. Not by prison. Probably a “stern warning”, some counselling and maybe a move into a sinecure. They will certainly be asked to be prayerful. The Vatican has form on this.

  6. AgentCormac says:

As ever, they will look after their own regardless of how heinous the crime. The vatican has a vested interest in playing this down and the fact it can somehow avoid handing suspects over to the secular authorities is disgraceful. As I’ve said before, if this was anything other than a religious organisation it would have been shut down years ago and half its management thrown into prison.

A well deserved sentence for an utter scumbag .

and maybe if so called feminists in this country would spend more time on issues like this instead of moaning about pictures of boobs in a newspaper they might get somewhere.

Since it was the vatican office of the inquisition, then headed by the Rattenfaenger, that told bishops in 1997 not to report child rape to police how is this going to go down now?

    An example

The RCC tune was changed in 2014 but that doesn’t erase history. Could be some arkward moments for the “pope emeritus”.

    @ zombiehunter.
What makes you think feminist haven’t gotten anywhere? If it wasn’t for them we’d still be living in the 70s.

  10. Broga says:

sailor1031: The RCC Church moves its lips, makes some of the right noises, claims values and virtues but behind the façade is a moral sewer. The core purpose of the Vatican is to extend its power, rip off its followers, accumulate wealth and indulge every sexual perversion of its priests that might satisfy their lusts.

Ratty, now relaxing surrounded by either adoring or contemptuous nuns – depending on how independent minded they are – thinks he has succeeded in his life of scams.

this muslim is no different than evangelistic christians. older men looking for the trophy wife.
this pope is no different than his hierarchy. older men looking to cover up their sexual desires.

the point I was making was about certain feminists who waste their time on nonsense like trying to ban lads mags when there are forced marriages (among other things) going on.
