Statue Christians vow to destroy is unveiled
A public unveiling by the Satanic Temple of a statue of Baphomet was forced to take place at a secret venue yesterday after Christians vowed to destroy it.
According to this report, threats against the huge $100,000 bronze monument which stands almost nine foot high, included this gem:
This Is complete bullshit. I can’t wait until we take this bitch down and fuck it up. Fuck Satan!
About 100 religious protesters gathered yesterday in Detroit to protest against the unveiling ceremony.
The Temple originally planned to unveil the goat-headed statue in public on commercial property, but had to move the ceremony to a secret, ticket-only location after receiving threats from Christians.
Protesters gathered at Bert’s Marketplace, where the unveiling was to have taken place. But the property owner backed out of the agreement after Christians expressed their fury and threatened to destroy the artwork.
Bishop Corletta Vaughn of the Holy Ghost Cathedral in Detroit said:
This unveiling will not happen in the City of Detroit on my watch. I’m here to stand against this being in the City of Detroit. We will not turn over our city to Satanists. It’s a violent spirit that’s moving to the city and infiltrating that place. We will drive them out of Dodge.
The protest was organised by Pastor David Bullock of the Greater St. Matthew Baptist Church, who has been a vocal opponent to the Satanic Temple and its planned Baphomet unveiling.
Earlier this month, Bullock got into a heated debate with the Satanic Temple’s Detroit chapter leader, Jex Blackmore in a television segment where Blackmore explained that the Satanists don’t worship a deity, but adhere to the philosophical and literature-based notion of Satan as an anti-tyranny figure.
The private function invited folk to “dance with the Devil” and promised “a night of chaos, noise, and debauchery”. According to the site set up for the event, the Baphomet monument:
Is already the most controversial and politically charged contemporary work of art in the world. Weighing one ton and towering at nearly nine feet tall, the bronze statue is not only an unparalleled artistic triumph, but stands as a testament to plurality and the power of collective action.
The event will serve as a call-to-arms from which we’ll kick off our largest fight to date in the name of individual rights to free exercise against self-serving theocrats.
