Statue Christians vow to destroy is unveiled

A public unveiling by the Satanic Temple of a statue of Baphomet was forced to take place at a secret venue yesterday after Christians vowed to destroy it.

According to this report, threats against the huge $100,000 bronze monument which stands almost nine foot high, included this gem:

This Is complete bullshit. I can’t wait until we take this bitch down and fuck it up. Fuck Satan!

About 100 religious protesters gathered yesterday in Detroit to protest against the unveiling ceremony.

The Temple originally planned to unveil the goat-headed statue in public on commercial property, but had to move the ceremony to a secret, ticket-only location after receiving threats from Christians.

Protesters gathered at Bert’s Marketplace, where the unveiling was to have taken place. But the property owner backed out of the agreement after Christians expressed their fury and threatened to destroy the artwork.

Bishop Corletta Vaughn of the Holy Ghost Cathedral in Detroit said:

This unveiling will not happen in the City of Detroit on my watch. I’m here to stand against this being in the City of Detroit. We will not turn over our city to Satanists. It’s a violent spirit that’s moving to the city and infiltrating that place. We will drive them out of Dodge.

The protest was organised by Pastor David Bullock of the Greater St. Matthew Baptist Church, who has been a vocal opponent to the Satanic Temple and its planned Baphomet unveiling.

Earlier this month, Bullock got into a heated debate with the Satanic Temple’s Detroit chapter leader, Jex Blackmore in a television segment where Blackmore explained that the Satanists don’t worship a deity, but adhere to the philosophical and literature-based notion of Satan as an anti-tyranny figure.

The private function invited folk to “dance with the Devil” and  promised “a night of chaos, noise, and debauchery”. According to the site set up for the event,  the Baphomet monument:

Is already the most controversial and politically charged contemporary work of art in the world. Weighing one ton and towering at nearly nine feet tall, the bronze statue is not only an unparalleled artistic triumph, but stands as a testament to plurality and the power of collective action.

The event will serve as a call-to-arms from which we’ll kick off our largest fight to date in the name of individual rights to free exercise against self-serving theocrats.

Among the many things christians hate is competition. And the christians should get on their knees and worship Satan for helping to fill their churches.

  3. Trevor Blake says:

Weak liberal Christians want to destroy the statue. Honest Christians will follow their God’s commandments, such as Deuteronomy 17:1-5: “And hath gone and served other gods, and worshipped them, either the sun, or moon, or any of the host of heavens, which I have not commanded. Then shalt thou bring forth that man or that woman, which have committed that wicked thing and shalt stone them with stones, till they die.” Only by killing people can Christians show their moral superiority.

A timely reminder of how Christians can be as totalitarian and intolerant as Muslims.

Given the current state of humanity, Satan seems to have the upper hand (the Cathars were right) so it’s probably smarter to worship His Satanic Majesty— a Black Mass is much more fun than the boring Catholic version.

A religion based around satan and a religion based around god – two sides of the same fucking nonsense – worship of a deity. Pure and simple bullshit.

hmmm… ‘scuse my cynicism, but the first part of the ad for the event in the link provided talks about self serving theocrats , and then later on we learn of VIP ticket holders – not much punk egalitarianism there it seems !

Baphomet isn’t even a god – read the link. Ignorant religiots raising cain once more, just like the muzzies, but there is, as we have come to expect, total confusion in the Bible over the question of “false gods”:

“Therefore concerning the eating of things sacrificed to idols, we know that there is no such thing as an idol in the world, and that there is no God but one. For even if there are so-called gods whether in heaven or on earth, as indeed there are many gods and many lords, yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom are all things and we exist for Him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we exist through Him.” (I Cor.8:4-6)

Are there any “other gods” or not, and, if so, do they have any real powers? In one place the answer is “No”, and in another we read that they are making warfare against God, his archangels and all the saints. It’s pick-and-mix theology again – just choose the bit that you like and use it to back up what you say!

Great work of art. Is that Boy Scout salute the same one that the pope gives?
    Just askin’.

At least it looks better than the “man on a stick” we’re used to seeing 🙂

    “destroy the statue”
I suppose this is opening a new opportunity for Christian-Muslim cooperation. Or competition.

This group is The Satanic Temple, who seem to be an atheistic spiritual group who campaign for secularism and are pro-science and basically small-l liberal.

An older US group, the Church of Satan, are very anti-egalitarian, according to Wikipedia. Their worldview appears to be Ayn-Rand-style right-wing libertarianism and includes support for Social Darwinism, eugenics, capital punishment, cessation of the welfare system, abolition of affirmative action etc. Not very nice, in fact.

@Bubblecar the US group seems to be more related to conservative republican xtrians from the old confederacy.

Someone might want to remind the good bishop that even Dodge is getting out of Dodge. Chrysler only makes 2 of their vehicles there now, the rest are built in Canada and Mexico!

If these Christians have a problem with Satan they should take it up with their god who, if you believe in fairy tales, created him. If you don’t want Satan, don’t believe in God.
