Saudis offer Germany mosques for migrants

Saudi Arabia has reportedly responded to the growing number of people fleeing the Middle East for western Europe – by offering to build 200 mosques in Germany.

According Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, which quoted a report in the Lebanese newspaper Al Diyar, Saudi Arabia would build one mosque for every 100 refugees who entered Germany in extraordinary numbers last weekend.

Germany is already home to the biggest mosque in Europe, the Cologne Central Mosque (above) which can accommodate up to 4,000 worshippers.

Syria’s richer Gulf neighbours have been accused of not doing their fair share in the humanitarian crisis, with Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and the UAE also keeping their doors firmly shut to asylum-seekers.

But the Independent said it would be unfair to suggest that the Gulf Arab states have done nothing to help the estimated four million Syrians who have fled their country since the start of the conflict in 2011.

Just this week, the al Hayat newspaper reported that 500,000 Syrians had found homes in Saudi Arabia since the civil war began – as workers, not refugees.

There have also been significant contributions from rich individuals towards the upkeep of refugee camps round the Syrian border, estimated by the BBC to total around $900 million (£600 million).

But amid a history of competition between the Gulf states and Iranian-allied nations, there is a deep fear that allowing an influx of Syrian refugees could also let in Syrians loyal to Bashar al-Assad.

There also exists a more general concern about demographic change, leaving the states opposed to the idea of welcoming refugees. In the UAE, foreign nationals already outnumber citizens by more than five to one.

Back in Germany, Angela Merkel welcomed two refugee families at a home for asylum-seekers in the Berlin suburb of Spandau on Thursday. She told reporters after the visit:

Their integration will certainly take place in part via the children, who will learn German very quickly in kindergarten. And I hope and believe that the great majority will want to learn our language very quickly.

Whether she will welcome Saudi Arabia’s reported offer, which Al Diyar noted would “have to go through the federal authorities”, remains to be seen.

    Looking on the dark side…
Of coarse they are offering mosques! Take the muslins from other countries…Please!!! We will build you mosques so that they can continue to be brainwashed into isLame so that when they get enough of them they can start taking over and putting their BS into law. Don’t think so? Look at what xtians have already done!
Get more secular, get out of any religion business and put laws in place and be ruthless about keeping them, no special privileges for religious and you will be better off!

    This will not end well.

” there is a deep fear that allowing an influx of Syrian refugees could also let in Syrians loyal to Bashar al-Assad”

Sort of like the ISIS fighters who are coming into Europe mixed in with the’refugees’. ISIS claims this to be true, and it likely is. There is little or no information on many of the arriving folks.

  3. Angela_K says:

Of course the Arabs want more mosques in Europe – as a way to claim land and spread their fascist ideology. Rather like the way a Dog urinates against lampposts to mark its territory.

  4. andym says:

I wouldn’t want to demonise the poor fleeing Syrians. If I’d lived there,I’d be on my way across Europe now.The fact that being in Assad’s bit would be a degree better than being in ISIS’s says it all.

But we have to be aware that this is an opportunity too good for any self-respecting Islamist to pass over.

That the Saudi government would rather have them worshiping in Germany than take them in, says something , but I’m not sure what.

Mosque is a misnomer for “Terrorist Training Centre”.

‘Mosque is a misnomer for “Terrorist Training Centre”.’

That’s a bit harsh. “Mosque” is a misnomer for “debilitating brain aneurysm.”

  7. I am evolved from a microbe says:

Perhaps the Saudis can pay for the new prisons needed to handle the geomerically escallating muslim convict burden …

I say no to mosques … muslims will treat it as their territory .. you know just like the one built on the temple mount in jerusalem. And they will preach jihad from it too. We must keep this invasion, for that is what it is, of muslims out of Europe. This is not a refugee crisis, this is an invasion. Why are fit men coming over … they should be fighting against their enemies. Well they are coming over to lay claim to Europe thats what. I say turn them away. We are importing an army of occupation … a ruthless guerilla army that will not comply with the Geneva Convention and that knows no moral code …. dont beleive me? Then take a look at what muslims do … stick this in your browser … … then weep for humanity and get ready toi give up everything you and your forbears fought for.

  8. Trevor Blake says:

It’s okay, Saudi Arabia welcomes new temples and churches and secular centers to be built in their country. Right?

  9. andym says:

Is this a humanist website, or have I inadvertently logged in to the BNP?

Whatever the failings of Middle Eastern states, refugees are coming here at least in part because they believe in the European Enlightenment history of tolerance, acceptance and freedom. I don’t want to throw that away.

  10. dennis says:

@Trevor Blake, I am ready to invade (ups I mean become a refugee) to Saudi Arabia.

the optics of the news pictures seems a little off to me with middle age men caring young children. I am not adding fuel to the conspiracy theory about ISIS coming into Europe but again it just looks funny.

  11. jay says:

I understand your concern for refugees, but start looking around at some of the unposed refugee photos. If there are any women, old people and children, they are all in the front for the photo op. The crowds of refugees are almost entirely young men (did these poor victims have to leave their parents, wives and children behind? –ha). The truckload of dead refugees in Austria was almost entirely men. This is not a normal flight from war, where the women and children are sent to safety and the men attempt to protect the homeland.

  12. Newspaniard says:

Remember the recent outcry of the baby on the beach and the heartrending story the father told how he tried to save them? Well, for a muslim, porkies seem to be the order of the day:

  13. jay says:

Some have questioned the authenticity of that photo (or the story itself).

Bodies washed ashore tend to naturally be depositied parallel to the waterline and the skin of drowning victims is normally blue or ashen.

  14. John the Drunkard says:

Saudi money will build mosques that propagate Saudi/Wahhabi Islam. The most aggressive, violent, and destructive version available.

The Saudi clan has already poured billions into mosque construction all over the world. And in every case, the tendency was to crush local expressions of Islamic culture that were not arab imperialist.

  15. Laura Roberts says:

I think an appropriate diplomatic response would be to impress upon the Saudis that the priorities right now are food, clothing, shelter, health care and education for the refugees, where education will come from secular schools. If the Saudis can help with any of that, great, but churches/mosques are not within a government’s purview here in the developed world.

Sadly I don’t think that’s the way it will transpire.

  16. Gilbert G. says:

Yep. They’re running from the horrors religion has wreaked upon them. Now they want to plant the seeds of that same cancer in the country that’s given them refuge! Brain-dead idiots, every one of them.
