Creationist Karl L Dahlstrom won’t get $58-m from Dawkins

Back in the mists of time – 1989 to be precise – Richard Dawkins wrote in a New York Times book review that ‘It is absolutely safe to say that if you meet somebody who claims not to believe in evolution, that person is ignorant, stupid or insane (or wicked, but I’d rather not consider that).

Well, Karl L. Dahlstrom, co-author of a 2013  anti-evolution book called The Organized Universe: Exclusive Scientific Proof that Darwinism is a Fraud, claimed that Dawkins had directly targeted him, and claimed in a lawsuit launched last year that had had suffered “emotional distress” and financial loss as a result of Dawkins’ attack :

Plaintiff Karl L. Dahlstrom not only does not believe in Evolution, but he is the only individual on earth in the history of man that has scientifically disproven Evolution.

This makes Karl L. Dahlstrom the number one candidate for Richard Dawkins attack, even though Karl L. Dahlstrom, i.e., the ‘somebody’, could not be ignorant, stupid, or insane or wicked as scientifically proven by the book, The Organized Universe by Karl L. Dahlstrom with C. Phillip Clegg.

Thus, the allegations or accusations/statement that Karl L. Dahlstrom, i.e. “somebody”, who does not believe in Evolution is ignorant, stupid, or insane or wicked is totally incorrect and false with results being a tort or worse against the Plaintiff Karl L. Dahlstrom.

Richard Dawkins has caused millions of persons to be prejudiced and biased against Karl L. Dahlstrom and injured his reputation and subjected him to hatred, contempt, ridicule and financial injury from persons not exposed to the truth about Darwinian Evolution and the position Plaintiff Karl L. Dahlstrom has taken on this issue.

When Dahlstrom, from Texas, filed his lawsuit, Friendly Atheist Hemant Mehta pointed out that the crackpot:

Is demanding that Dawkins pay him $8 million in actual damages and $50 million in punitive damages – numbers he’s pulling out of his ass, as far as I can tell.

Furthermore, he wants Dawkins to publicly apologize and destroy ‘by fire or shredding’ every publication that includes the statement. So every copy of a New York Times from 1989. He wants every online mention of that statement gone as well.

This week a court in Texas kicked the lawsuit into the long grass. The judgement says that:

The Plaintiff offers nothing more than his own far-fetched rhetoric that Dawkins’ statement refers to and was intended to personally harm him.

Plaintiff does not dispute, and in fact admits, that Dawkins has repeatedly made this same general statement in his books, at conferences, in interviews and debates, and that on its face, the statement does not attack any particular individual, but merely references ‘somebody’ …

Plaintiff’s allegations – that Defendant Dawkins’ statement about evolution referred to and was intended to harm Plaintiff – amount to nothing more than unsubstantiated conclusions, they are not entitled to assumption of the truth.

On Amazon, which offers Dahlstrom’s two-star book for a mere $19.95, a reviewer called Joseph Pancheri wrote:

It is absolutely safe to say that if you meet somebody who claims not to believe in evolution, that person is ignorant, stupid or insane or wicked.

Amazon tells us this about the creationist:

Karl Dahlstrom is a modern Renaissance man: author, inventor, educator, legal researcher, scientist and contrarian to conventional thought. Although he is degreed (an MS in physics), his prodigious talents lie in ‘thinking outside the box’ and finding hidden truths.

  1. L.Long says:

Well so called Renaissance men went too smart back then either.

  2. David Anderson says:

“Plaintiff Karl L. Dahlstrom not only does not believe in Evolution, but he is the only individual on earth in the history of man that has scientifically disproven Evolution.”

He just hasn’t bothered to let all those silly scientist working on evolutionary biology know yet.

“Karl L. Dahlstrom … is the only individual on earth in the history of man that has scientifically disproven Evolution.”
Well, I’m sure that his forthcoming Nobel Prize (value c. $1.5M) will be some consolation for the loss of the court case.

  4. Broga says:

With opponents with Dahlstrom’s “prodigious talents” Richard Dawkins should have been running for cover. However, it seems that the prodigious talents were for something other than rational thinking. It wasn’t Dawkins who ” injured his reputation and subjected him to hatred, contempt, ridicule and financial injury …” The injury was self inflicted from writing about his weird and incredible religious beliefs.”

I’d never heard of Dahlstrom before, and nor has anyone else it would seem, but he obviously has an ego the size of Mars. Here is what Prof Dawkins says:

We are not talking about Darwin’s particular theory of natural selection. It is still (just) possible for a biologist to doubt its importance, and a few claim to. No, we are here talking about the fact of evolution itself, a fact that is proved utterly beyond reasonable doubt.

Dahlstrom appears (is his book “self-published”?) to have discovered Benford’s Law, in which case he would presumably NOT be denying “the fact of evolution itself” (he believes in the Big Bang) but “Darwin’s particular theory of natural selection”, in which case Prof Dawkins was most definitely NOT talking about him or his ilk. Maybe I am jumping to conclusions here, but it seems to me to be the case – just look at the summary of his ideas on Amazon.

It’s a deeply disturbing characteristic of many human minds that they can accept the incredible assertion of the existence of a god without any supporting evidence whatsoever but reject the facts of evolution when the mass of evidence confirming its validity is totally and overwhelmingly irrefutable. It seems that the human mind contains,in many cases, a “one time permanent write” or “programmable read only”type memory. Give me the child and I will give you the man. This is why the pious crave unchallenged access to children. To steal their minds from under the noses of those who love them. The world will be vastly improved when the pious are denied access to our children.

I always find it hard to believe that anyone would ever seriously buy such a book in the first place.

Such books should all be shredded and used to make toilet paper or something useful like that.

  8. Angela_K says:

Dahlstrom is an insult to the scientific profession and clearly ignores the scientific method of looking at all sources including those that may contradict a theory. Like so many of “religious scientists”he has severe cognitive dissonance and refuses to let go of the religious nonsense that was indoctrinated into him. Dahlstrom appears to have dismissed the Lenski experiments and the ongoing studies of Finches, both provide over-whelming evidence for evolution.

    “(is his book “self-published”?)”
Well, according to Amazon.com the cheaper of the paperback editions (£23 vs £63!) is published by Outskirts Press, a print-on-demand outfit. (I would imagine the demand is very low!) In the old days, such a firm would probably be classed as a vanity publisher but p.o.d. can be more mainstream these days.

BTW since the book’s title includes “Darwinism Is a Fraud”: pot, kettle, black.

if Dahlstrom wants to sue some one then let him sue the people who taught him to be a creationist. they are the ones who have caused him emotional distress and financial loss.
