Deaf victims of Catholic abuse in Quebec get a huge pay-out

A judge has ordered a Catholic religious order, the Clercs de St Viateur du Canada, and the church-run Montreal Insitute for the Deaf to pay $30 million to a group of former students who were sexually assaulted by priests.

According to this report, the settlement for sexual assault is the largest in Quebec history.

At least 60 deaf students were assaulted by members of the religious community and lay people working at the school between 1940 and 1982. The school changed its name to the Institut Raymond-Dewar in 1984.

The judgment brings to an end a long and painful process that began with the authorisation of a class action suit in 2012.

The plaintiffs include students who were as young as eight years old when they were repeatedly assaulted at the boys boarding school.

Twenty-eight religious staff and six lay people were named in the class action, of which only five or six are believed to still be alive.

Which case do you think will be the one that makes catholics angry and starts them leaving this vile organization? No I don’t think so either…..

    Justice delayed is justice denied.

A boarding school means a captive audience, deaf students means a further handicap to public discovery.

Sheesh. How low can people go?

  3. CoastalMaineBird says:

So, who actually pays this $30M fine?

The perps themselves? Only a few are left alive.

The school? Maybe an incentive to keep an eye open.

The RCC in general? Pfff.. The cost of doing business.

The judge was far far too soft on the rcc.

    The judge should:-
    a) Have made the rcc pay much much more. 30 Million is peanuts to them. A hundred times more would have been comensurate with the crimes of rape and the crimes of institutional denial evasion protection and delay. It would also be a real hit against the public image of the rcc.
    b) Bring the surviving rapists to court for trial and punishment.
    c) Bring those who protected them to court for trial and punishment.
    d) Impose huge fines, or confiscation of property, seizure of assests if the rcc does not comply in full.

The USA actually arrested FIFA Officials in foreign countries. What is more important here? Corruption and profiteering inside FIFA or CHILD RAPE? Go on Canada … arrest Ratzinger and fellow conspirators and apply the full weight of the law. Its what all the victims of priestly rape deserve.

Now will come the appeals and endless time wasting by the RCC whilst assets are move out of the court’s jurisdiction, if they haven’t already been moved.

Lawyers will get fat fees and the victims little or nothing.

  6. Broga says:

Sexual abuse of a deaf eight year old! And these poor kids are at the mercy of the brutes who make comforting noises about “suffer little children.” This is sick and chilling. The RCC won’t pay up, of course. And they will have plenty of allies helping them avoid paying.

  7. Cali Ron says:

Hollow victory for the victims. We know most of the perpetrators have died, but what about the abused. How many of them passed away before this verdict. 34 years after the fact the church finally is forced to own up. Too little, too late!

Sometimes the RCs seem to be making progress where I would least expect it. I heard a woman representing Stonewall this morning on the religious programme “Sunday.” She said she was a Roman Catholic and said that gays had misunderstood the RC Church. Everywhere she went she was met with great kindness and understanding.

The RC Church needs support. Are gays, an increasingly influential group, now being courted by the RCs to get them on board?

  9. Trevor Blake says:

In Exodus 4:11 we learn that the Lord makes men deaf. In Mark 9:25 we learn that an unclean spirit makes men deaf. The Bible says the Lord is an unclean spirit. This would explain Leviticus 21:18, in which we learn deaf people (among others with a ‘blemish’) may not worship the Lord in a church. And being unable to worship, they are of course damned to Hell. That sounds like something an unclean spirit would do: create men only for the purpose of torturing them for eternity.

But of course I’m an atheist and have no moral compass, so what do I know? Since I’m an atheist, raping and beating children might be a good thing and I’m not able to tell. It sure seems popular among Christian clergy.

rcc – the biggest, the most successful and the most disgusting crime syndicate the world has ever seen.

  11. Justin Badby says:

And the biggest, the most successful and the most disgusting crime syndicate the world has ever seen operates in plain view of everyone on the planet. They wear fantastically opulent and obvious accoutrements as a kind of camoflage … it is know as dazzle. Wear fancy gear, sport an enormous crucifix, peddle your your feigned humility as ostentatiously as is possible and people will be conned. Its called DAZZLE. People cannot see the truth for the glaring lights and hysterical praise. But look closer and check this out to see the falsity of catholic pomp.

Sorry … here is the link.
Fuck children but wear fancy gear and tell the world how good and godly you are and you can carry on unnoticed.
