Archbishop sparks a moral panic over Girl Scout cookies

A ‘spiritual crisis’ over the selling of  Girl Scout cookies on Catholic premises has been triggered by the archbishop of St Louis, Robert Carlson, above.

In a letter circulated to the region’s priests and scout leaders, he questions whether the Girl Scout movement is spiritually in line with the teachings of the Catholic Church, according to this report.

His letter questions whether Girl Scouts USA, the nationwide network with more than two million young female members, and its parent body, the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, should be entrusted with the spiritual formation of its charges given the groups’ support for such horrors as contraception and abortion.

He also accuses them of promoting “inappropriate role models” such as the feminist writers Gloria Steinem and the late Betty Friedan, and of forging partnerships with human rights groups such as Amnesty International and Oxfam that advocate reproductive rights.

Girl Scouts is exhibiting a troubling pattern of behavior and it is clear to me that as they move in the ways of the world it is becoming increasingly incompatible with our Catholic values.

We must stop and ask ourselves – is Girl Scouts concerned with the total well-being of our young women? Does it do a good job forming the spiritual, emotional and personal well-being of Catholic girls?

Though he does not order an immediate severing of ties with the Girl Scouts and their cookies, Carlson does urge each pastor in the region to consider ejecting them from Catholic property and replacing them with other forms of social networking for young female parishioners.

Some 4,000 Girl Scouts are currently understood to meet on Catholic premises in St Louis.

Carlson added:

Our primary obligation is to help our girls grow as women of God. Several alternative organizations exist, many of which have a Catholic or Christian background.

Girl Scouts USA has not risen to the bait of the archbishop’s letter. In a statement, it said with measured diplomacy that it looked forward to:

Extending our longstanding relationship with faith-based organisations, including the Catholic Church and Catholic communities throughout the country … We remain committed to building girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place.”

Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri said it had enjoyed cooperation with the archdiocese for almost 100 years.

Although we are a secular organisation, we greatly value our long-standing partnerships with religious organizations across many faiths.

    I’m with the Archbishop on this one. Look at the appalling role models these innocent girls are being encouraged to follow;

” such as the feminist writers Gloria Steinem and the late Betty Friedan, and of forging partnerships with human rights groups such as Amnesty International and Oxfam that advocate reproductive rights.”

These girls have to be protected from these messengers from the devil. Let them be guided instead by rapacious priestly paedophiles and taught fetid superstitions such as an abhorrence of contraception. Let the priests put them on a path that will lead them to breed like rabbits, stay married even if their partner is violent and, above all, give plenty of money to the RC Church.

Spouting such anachronistic opinions means only one thing – this guy isn’t even worth irony or criticisim . Stupid springs to mind.

“Girl Scouts is exhibiting a troubling pattern of behavior and it is clear to me that as they move in the ways of the world it is becoming increasingly incompatible with our Catholic values.” NO, it’s catholic values that are incompatible with rational, intelligent human beings.

“Our primary obligation is to help our girls grow as women of God.” Exactly. They are more concerned with indoctrinating them and keeping them in the church than they are with the girls well being on any level, but especially spiritual.

Wake up catholics! Why should you take advise concerning young girls from any priest or catholic authority given their history of abuse towards children and women. To the church the primary purpose of women is to have as many children as possible, raise them to be catholics and be subservient to men.

A bigoted ahole member of the RCC criminal elite says something, great now do the exact opposite and you can be wrong!!!

  5. Justin Badby says:

He does not like girl guides biscuits … he prefers to get his hands on their buns.

“At other schools, they send young girls unprepared into a cold merciless world. But here at St. Trinian’s, it is the merciless world which must be prepared.” “The Belles of St. Trinian’s,” I think.

Perhaps a compromise could be arranged.

  7. Marcus says:

Given that he’s a Catholic archbishop, Justin Badby, one can assume he’d prefer Boy Scout buns.

  8. Matthew Carr says:

I see nothing here that conflicts with the slippery concept of official catholic doctrine. What is new is that at every age the church insists that women choose between it and “the world”. There is no longer any presumption of her choosing what is in her own best interest, the power and wealth of the church is paramount.

The end result can easily be imagined by thinking of the most vulnerable of the catholic young women; the poor, the orphans, the LGBTQ, the disabled, the mentally ill, the crime victims and just as importantly, the ones who are left wanting because they are part of an overly large catholic family.

  9. Trevor Blake says:

Easier to criticize little girls than his fellow clergy who are rapists. And criticism of his fellow clergy rapists who are rapists should be every word coming out of his mouth until they are all exposed and out and the policy of hiding them – a policy that everyone on planet earth now knows about – is formally disavowed.

But it’s easier to pick on little girls selling cookies, I guess, for a weakling like this.

  10. Justin Badby says:

Marcus … yes but there are priests, those for whom masturbation is not enough, who have the compulsion to abuse children for sexual relief. And when that priestly urge is overwhelming and there are no boys around then I am sure that girls will suffice. And I am damn sure that there is a contingent of priests who prefer young girls anyway. Meanwhile the rcc will carry on bullying, lying, politicising, interfering, lobbying, blackmailing, mudslinging, retarding, strutting and exploiting the poor in the full knowledge that for many of their priests the sexual abuse of chilren is seen as a perk of the job and is the reason why so many sexually repressed inverts, social misfits and pedoplhiles sign up in the first place.

If the rcc was truly interested in ridding itself of this crime it should allow the priests to have grown up relations with men or women according to their taste. Or if thats not acceptable form an order of uber nuns and pay them a goodly salary for servicing the needs and depravation of the pious brethren. I am sure if the money is right there will be no shortage of women, or guys, who would be up for it. And why not? The rcc has done and is doing far worse things than this. And its much cheaper than paying out hundreds of millions to the child victims of priestly sexual abuse. To introduce such a scheme would surely count as a miracle leaving Frankie only one more to conjure up for his ticket to sainthood.

    Jesus fucking Christ.

Following the same logic presumably this purple hatted prick thinks that Catholic girls (and boys) should now be excluded from the Public School system wherever Sex-Ed classes teach about contraception.

  12. Robster says:

Why don’t they get together with the Guides and bake the Jesus wafers for the “Dine on the deity” church ritual? Girl Guide Cookies could morph into Jesus Flavour Girl Guide Cookies. To make them attractive to the non believers why not add some choc chips and perhaps offer a dip? Get the kids interested too, the priestly types would like that.

The same Archbishop was involved in covering up clerical child abuse. He claimed he didn’t know it was a crime, and forgot an awful lot about it under legal deposition- see – http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/06/10/archbishop-carlson-sex-abuse-crime_n_5479915.html.
    This is high-level Christian morality.

  14. barriejohn says:

Steve: That was, indeed, highlighted on this site. As child abuse is not strictly forbidden in the Bible one can, perhaps, forgive his uncertainty over the matter. It’s not as if it is actually mentioned in his holy book of guidance, as is the case with such matters as the consumption of fish with scales, or the trimming of beards and hair!

We learn today that Franklin Graham won’t be buying the cookies either:

    http://www.pinknews.co.uk/2016/03/01/franklin-graham-wont-buy-girl-scout-cookies-because-they-support-lgbt-people/

Archbishop Carlson is exactly right—the “ways of the world” are incompatible with biblical values. More church leaders need his boldness in speaking the truths that set those who follow God’s Word apart from the rest of the world. I don’t know about you, but I won’t be buying any Girl Scout cookies this year.

    So childish!
