Lashes & prison for Saudi man who posted atheist messages

A court in Saudi Arabia has sentenced a man to 10 years in prison and 2,000 lashes for expressing his atheism in hundreds of social media posts.

The Independent reports that the 28-year-old man admitted to being an atheist and refused to repent, saying that what he wrote reflected his own beliefs and that he had the right to express them. The man has not been named.

“Religious police” in charge of monitoring social networks reportedly found more than 600 tweets denying the existence of God, ridiculing Koranic verses, accusing all prophets of lies and saying their teaching fuelled hostilities. The court also fined him 20,000 riyals – or, just short of £4,000

In 2014 the oil-rich kingdom, under the late Saudi King Abdullah, introduced a series of new laws which defined atheists as terrorists, according to a report released from Human Rights Watch.

In a string of royal decrees and an overarching new piece of legislation to deal with terrorism generally, King Abdullah attempted to clamp down on all forms of political dissent and protests that could “harm public order”.

Article one of the new provisions defined terrorism as:

Calling for atheist thought in any form, or calling into question the fundamentals of the Islamic religion on which this country is based.

Speaking at the time the new measures were introduced Joe Stork, deputy Middle East and North Africa director of Human Rights Watch, said:

Saudi authorities have never tolerated criticism of their policies, but these recent laws and regulations turn almost any critical expression or independent association into crimes of terrorism.

If atheists are classed as terrorists what the fuck does the Saudi ‘government’ call those who daily detonate bombs killing hundreds every week throughout their precious muslim world? Are they classed as ‘petty crooks’?
The Saudi ruling clan are idiots.

Primitive beyond understanding. What a shit country … and what a shit religion … I mean really awfully shitty … much worse the the rcc which is bad enough.

  4. Trevor Blake says:

Allah is such a weak deity that the failure of just one man to spend his nights and days praising him his whole life long requires the force of an entire government to punish him. Why, it’s almost as if Allah can do nothing – nothing at all – except what his followers do. And what they can do is have a temper tantrum that not everyone wants to play with their imaginary friend.

Are these silly Saudi’s sniffing their refined oil products or something?

  6. 1859 says:

@Trevor Blake – really the persecution of this man has nothing to do with religion. It is all to do with crushing any dissent, any criticism which may make people think that being ruled by an unelected oligarchy is wrong. The Saudi ruling elite will do anything (in this case they are using their religion) to stifle freedom of speech because they do not want to lose their privileged life-style. Atheism is the seed they probably fear most because it leads to the liberation of the individual – and when people are liberated like this they are not so easy to rule. It’s a scenario that has happened time and time again throughout history.

@Trevor Blake: Based on how the Saudis behave, Allah must be the Donald Trump of deities.

@1859: Sad that history has to repeat itself over and over (and over and over and…) yet people still fail to realize that being part of a religion makes them easy targets for manipulation.

Thats exactly what the clerics of all religions have always done.

Millions don’t get a choice. Be a part, or play act as if you are and keep your mouth shut, otherwise you will get punished … severely punished … 100,000 lashes, hacked to pieces, stoned, immolated …And don’t forget its not that long ago when unbelief was punishable by death in England. Religion is coercion, blackmail and the ultimate protection racket. Believe or die. For muslims that is still the way today.

Oh what a wonderful thing it would be if a Tunguska sized impactor would stike the evil black place in the picture. The best thing for humanity would be its instant vapourisation. Humanity evolved because an asteroid expunged the dinosaurs … we need another one right now to extinguish islam.

And everyone suffers the consequences of islam … everyone … except those who exploit the masses … Saudi Princes, Ayatollahs, rulers of islamic states … who make a tidy comfy living from the cowed stupefied undereducated underclasses.
