Cop shoots Russian diplomat dead, shouts ‘God is great’

Russia’s ambassador to Turkey Andrey Karlov was shot dead earlier today by Mevlut Mert Altintas, above, a 22-year-old riot squad police officer.

The Telegraph reports that the assassin shouted Allahu Akbar – God is great – as he pulled the trigger, and said:

We die in Aleppo, you die here. We have made an oath to Mohammed to die in martyrdom … a revenge for Syria and Aleppo.

The gunman – an off-duty policeman – opened fire at an art gallery in Ankara as Andrei Karlov was making a speech.

The murder followed days of protests in Turkey over Russia’s role in Syria as a backer of President Bashar al-Assad.

The Turkish foreign ministry insisted it would not allow the murder to “cast a shadow” over Turkey’s improving relations with Russia.

Altintas was shot dead by police in a shoot-out that lasted 15 minutes. Three other people were wounded in the attack.

President Putin spoke on the phone to Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan after the shooting and Moscow said it was:

A tragic day in the history of our country and Russian diplomacy.

Later today, in what appeared to be another terrorist attack, at least nine people were killed and 50 others injured when a truck ploughed into a Christmas market in Berlin.

Give a mind frozen by the edicts of the 7th Century, the tools of the 21st Century and the result is carnage, mayhem and the resurgence of the 7th Century.

  2. 1859 says:

…In Ankara, in Berlin, in Nice, Paris, Aleppo, Yemen…an ‘oath’ to the devil that is mohammed …

I’m still waiting for the day I see the headline “Breaking news, God kills someone who offended him all by himself “. Not holding my breath.

Cali Ron: Not possible, I’m afraid. You may have seen the following on Friendly Atheist today (God made a church bus start in the cold weather). I fell about laughing!

  5. Robster says:

This all powerful god they constantly refer to seems to be remaining completely useless. Or, the ex-copper with a gun is more powerful than the preferred fairy.

  6. Cali Ron says:

barriejohn : So god made physics do what it always does anyway. I’ve got to wonder why god can’t get up to speed with Obama? Surely he could just pull a drone out of his all powerful ass and blow all of us infidels up. Drones are much more reliable than the religious. Or NATO!

  7. Trevor Blake says:

CAN’T WAIT to read non-Muslims say this has nothing to do with Islam, then caution against the anti-Muslim backlash that never happens. CAN’T WAIT.

Islam: always just one more dead body away from being the religion of peace.

  8. RussellW says:

Altintas was obviously ‘radicalised’ by Western prejudice against followers of the Religion of Peace. Someone flipped his hijab perhaps. Hang on, he’s a Turk in Turkey, that one isn’t going to work is it?

Given the Russians rather cavalier attitude to casualties, many more jihadis will be given a chance to become martyrs.

  9. Broga says:

If this had happened in the UK our many religious MPs would have had the solution. We need many more Muslims as MPs and in the House of Lords. Keep ignoring the barbarities of FGM as it is rooted in a traditional culture. And, of course, let sharia law run its course.

Women must have their faces covered, divorced by a word from their male lords and masters who must be free to beat them and treat them as sexual and domestic serfs in the home.

That would resolve the problems and we will then all live happily ever after.

Cali Ron: I was referring to the graph about God’s diminishing power, actually (posted in the comments), rather than the idiotic story. Did you see it?

  11. Stephen Mynett says:

OT, but will the religionist idiots like Carey who ramble on about a “war on Christmas” that does not exist bother to comment and/or condemn what could be described as a war on Christmas, the Islamic attack on a Weihnachtsmarkt in Berliner Zoo.

  12. Michael Glass says:

Another wonderful advertisement for religious zealotry.

  13. John says:

There are aspects to this report that I find odd.
Firstly, how was it possible for this individual to enter a public place with a firearm?
Secondly, I believe he was an ex-cop. He was only 22 years of age. Why was he not under closer scrutiny?
Thirdly, I would have expected either the Russian or the Turkish authorities to have had better diplomatic protection than the ambassador appeared to have had.
Fourthly, it seems it is official Turkish rhetoric that has caused this incident to occur. What steps are the Turkish authorities now taking to stop these kinds of incidents?
There are – no doubt – other aspects that require much closer scrutiny but will any changes now take place?
The man who died was apparently a great peace-maker.
His death should be considered to be a real tragedy.

  14. John says:

According to a report in the Mirror, the assassin was supposed to be providing armed protection to the ambassador.
How well did his superiors do in choosing him for that job?
The Turks are now trying to blame Britain, NATO – anyone else – for the shooting. See http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/britain-blamed-after-russias-ambassador-9488222.
Why would any rational person want to go there?

  15. Broga says:

Karlov seems to have been a mature, sophisticated, peace seeking man. In the increasingly barbaric religious world he had to die. Except for the religious it is impossible to understand how the cowardly shooting of him in the back could benefit anyone.

  16. barriejohn says:

I would be inclined to class the murder of the Ambassador as probably more politically motivated than anything, though we don’t know a lot yet, but we don’t know anything at all about the Berlin massacre, as the only suspect has now been released without charge, so how anyone can be drawing conclusions about it I have no idea!

  17. Cali Ron says:

John: He was an off duty officer, not ex, which is why he had access with a gun. Of course he passed the requirements to be a police officer in Turkey just fine-he was a Muslim. Who says politics and religion don’t mix? You just have to keep them shook up real good like salad dressing.

barriejohn: I missed the graph, having trouble with that web site. Wouldn’t god have to actually have some power before it could diminish?

  18. barriejohn says:

Cali Ron: I posted the link!

One of the funniest things I’ve come across on the net.

  19. John says:

Cali Ron: The Mirror claims ‘…Russia’s ambassador to Turkey assassinated by his police protection officer.’
Even more heinous – being killed by his own bodyguard.
    Source: http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/britain-blamed-after-russias-ambassador-9488222.

  20. Cali Ron says:

barriejohn : Hilarious! Appearing on toast. Lends new meaning to the phrase “he’s toast “.

John: Maybe he should not have left his security from Muslim radicals up to a Muslim nation. Currently I wouldn’t risk visiting Turkey, they seem to be going down the rabbit hole of radicalized Islam.

  21. Mass immigration is cultural suicide. The Islamic invasion of Europe by stealth must cease! Indigenous Europeans are not producing enough offspring to sustain their populations. This insanity cannot go on! Hopefully, Marine Le Pen and Geert Wilders will do well next year. As for Merkel, she should take a leaf out of Adolf’s book, retreat to her bunker and do away with herself. I recommend either cyanide or a loaded pistol. There, I’ve said it.

  22. I wonder how many attacks by not-truly-Muslim–nothing-to-do-with-Islam-non-terrorist-lone-wolves-suffering-from-mental-health-problems will occur in 2017? A lot, I suspect…..After which will surely follow several reports of women having their hijabs torn off or of bacon rashers being thrown at the doors of Mosques, plus the inevitable footage of a racist rant by a drunk on a bus. Titter. We’ve seen it all before.

  23. RussellW says:

    Miss Floribunda,

Of course it’s all the fault of those uppity Kuffars who never seem to accept their inferior status.
My favourite is “Muslims fear backlash”.

  24. Muslims fear back-passage is something one will NEVER hear.
