Charlie Hebdo has ‘gone soft’ on Islamic extremists

Charlie Hebdo has ‘gone soft’ on Islamic extremists

Despite the fact that French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo continues to flourish – it has just launched a German edition – it has been accused of surrendering to Islamic extremists by avoiding depictions of the ‘prophet’ Mohammed.

The accusation was made by one of its staff members, Zineb El Rhazoui, 35, above, who survived the deadly attack on the publication’s offices two years ago, on January 7, 2015.

She was out of the building when Islamist gunmen burst into the Paris offices with assault rifles and began firing. Twelve of her colleagues were killed.

Charlie Hebdo marked the anniversary of the atrocity with the cover below, which says:

2017, at last light at the end of the tunnel.

According to this report,  El Rhazoui – the “most protected woman” in France – said she was  said she’s resigning from Charlie Hebdo.

Charlie Hebdo died on January 7. Freedom at any cost is what I loved about Charlie Hebdo, where I worked through great adversity.

She added that the jihadists may as well be editing the magazine now, ensuring “that Mohammed is no longer depicted”.  El Rhazoui said she hasn’t actually written anything for the publication in about a year due to the direction it has taken.

Last October, El Rhazoui visited the Women in the World offices in New York City for a wide-ranging interview with reporter Emma-Kate Symons. She elaborated on the survivor’s guilt she grappled with after escaping the grim fate many of her colleagues met.

Straight after the attacks, like many of my colleagues I felt guilty for having stayed alive. I said to myself ‘Those who are dead are dead for all our work, and some are dead when it wasn’t even their work.’

But it was my work because I am a journalist and I am still here. And then you understand this is all part of survivor syndrome, which is normal when you survive a massacre like that.

El Rhazoui has been one of the most outspoken critics in the world about Islamic extremism, to the point where fatwas calling for her death have been issued and she routinely receives death threats. She travels with a constant security presence surrounding her. Her latest book, Destroy Islamic Fascism, is just as incendiary, if not more so, than anything she’s done in the past.

Zineb El Rhazoui complains about violent Islamic extremism, so they respond by issuing fatwas calling for her death. Religion really doesn’t get irony at all!

The evil concept of god, the stupidity of people who believe it, the nastiness of lawless islamofacist imams who call for jihad against everyone who stands against them and the devastating power of easily obtained weaponry trump free speech and democracy. This is the true face of islam.

Well I say the poice should be applauded for taking out one such gun toting thug on the M62 last week. He was described as some kind of administrative clerk. But he is shown on social media with a Lamborghini and a BMW M3 and his house was festooned with CCTV. So he was a criminal thug with a gun, with utter contempt for the law and has previous form for discharging a firearm in public. His removal should make the citizens of the Northwest a bit safer. But there are more like him waiting for the chance to martyr themselves in the name of an abomination.

    Gary,

What happened to “innocent until proven guilty”? And whatever else he may or may not have been, he does not appear to have been an “Islamofascist” martyr by any stretch of the imagination.

Gary: What have those links got to do with this thread – or even this site for that matter? And contrary to what the Daily Mail has been bellyaching about recently (“another victory”, according to today’s front page), the money went to an Ethiopian women’s rights organization, not to a “girl band”. I don’t know how Paul Dacre manages to sleep at night!

Critics of Islam have different approaches; some are loud about it, some are quiet. Just as Muslims have different approaches: some kill critics, others are quiet about Muslims who kill critics.

If the majority of Muslims are peaceable, what prevents them from cleaning their own house?

  7. John says:

Instead of depicting Mohamed, why does not Charlie Hebdo expose the fact that no contemporaneous historical evidence exists that Mohamed ever existed?
The same is true for Moses and Jesus so that should be mentioned too to forestall accusations of islamophobia.
Ultimately, they should be challenging beliefs in all non-existent supernatural entities as they simply do not exist. Once enough people realise the truth of this, we should all then be able to live in peace and security.

If what Ms El Rhazoui says is true, and she should know, then we are truly fucked.

What I remember about the attacks, was the embarrassing display of cowardice both by our so called politicians and so called main stream media.

The blood of the Charlie Hebdo journalists was not even cold when the above mentioned cowards were rushing to tell us plebs that ‘Islam, is indeed, a religion of peace’.

  9. John says:

Unfortunately, this all began well before the attack on Charlie Hebdo.
Cowardly spineless politicians in this country failed to tell the Iranian Ayatollah Khomeini to FUCK OFF when he issued a fatwa against Salman Rushdie after he published his book “The Satanic Verses”.
We should have told Khomeini and the whole Muslim world then that if one hair on Rushdie’s head was harmed, we would bomb Mecca to smithereens.
If we timed such a mission for the annual haj, it would have the greatest effect possible.

I am going to buy this book not because I intend to read it but in order to express my support for this brave woman. Zineb El Rhazoui: “Destroy Islamic Fascism”.

  11. Stuart H. says:

Why does it have to be Charlie Hebdo, one smallish independent publication, alone that stands up to such thugs? No use whinging at them, at least they had a go.

If you’re going to get mad, then get mad at Murdoch & Co, billionaires who are happy enough to take a pop at any poor sod who can’t reply but wimp out totally when there’s a chance to name and shame real villains.

As a first step, how about one of the major publishers putting out an English language edition of Destroy Islamic Fascism? Shouldn’t be a problem for a US publisher, especially the kind that are mouthpieces for Trump, but I bet none of them will.

StuartH: Total hypocrisy from the press. The Mail rants and raves over “non-dom” non-taxpayers, yet never mentions Lord Rothermere and his family and their run-ins with the taxman (I wonder why that would be?). Not only them, but they never mention any scandal involving Richard Desmond, and, surprise, surprise, you’ll never read a word against the Rothermeres in Express newspapers. I remember reading years ago that J. Edgar Hoover, JFK and LBJ all lived within spitting distance of one another in Washington, and that each had enough dirt on the others to ensure that he himself was safe from exposure!

A truly funny, satirical magazine that attacks ALL religions is what is needed. What too many people forget – including contributors to this site – is that it is only when the core concept of a religion (the existence of a ‘god’) is undermined, only when the whole notion of a supreme being is shown to be an illusion, does this – more than anything else – shake the foundations of religious belief. It is easy – though I know it’s also important – to get mired and bogged down in all the political and social manifestations of religious delusions, but take away, destroy, reduce to zero, the existence of their god and you hollow out the core of their religion, you expose it for the shell it is, and importantly you will sow the seed of common sense that one day will make them turn their backs on institutionalised irrationality.

  14. John the Drunkard says:

    1859
While I’ve never really ‘got’ Charlie Hebdo, or most French humor for that matter, CH mocked religion across the board, and with a focus proportionate to its environment and audience. Right-wing Catholicism got more pokes from CH than Islam, and Haredi crazies in Israel received thrashings whenever their behavior got much exposure.

But of course, only the One. Single. Religion. that is NEVER the cause of any problem, is guaranteed to generate troops of murderous thugs whenever us dhimmis dare ‘disrespect’ it.
