Religious jackass is Donald Trump’s choice to head the CIA
In Trump’s new administration, Mike Pompeo, above, a Kansas congressman, will feel right at home with the other Christian schizoids and psychopaths who will govern an America that’s lurched so far to the right that it’s in danger of sliding clear off the planet.
Last year, John Brennan, head of the CIA, suggested he would resign if a new president were to order his agency to restart the use of waterboarding.
I’m not going to be the director of CIA that gives that order. I think they’re going to need to find another director.
That issue, reported the Independent, became entirely moot after Donald Trump announced he had selected Pompeo, a hardline Republican who approves of the use of waterboarding, to head the agency.
In a statement posted on his website in September 2014, Pompeo criticised Obama for prohibiting the use of waterboarding and other harsh techniques, and during the 2016 election campaign, Trump said he approved of reintroducing waterboarding, which involves placing a cloth over a shackled suspect’s mouth and then pouring water over the cloth. The technique reportedly creates a sensation of drowning.
Speaking in South Carolina last February, Trump said:
Don’t tell me it doesn’t work – torture works … Believe me, it works.
In June 2015, Pomeo headlined a “God and Country Rally” at Wichita’s Summit Church. He declared:
To worship our lord and celebrate our nation at the same place is not only our right, it is our duty.
According to Michelle Goldberg, writing today for Slate, Pompeo’s speech was:
A mishmash of domestic culture war callouts and dark warnings about the danger of radical Islam.
He cited an inflammatory prayer that a pastor named the Rev Joe Wright once delivered before the Kansas State Legislature:
America had worshipped other Gods and called it multiculturalism. We’d endorsed perversion and called it an alternative lifestyle.
He lamented government efforts to “rip faith from our schools” and then segued immediately into a discussion of the jihadi threat: “This evil is all around us.” Pompeo concluded by describing politics as
A never-ending struggle … until the rapture.
However, ABC News reported that Pompeo vowed today that torture would “absolutely not” be renewed under his leadership.
