Christian parents jailed for life for causing their son’s death

Christian parents jailed for life for causing their son’s death

Rather than seek medical help for their diabetic son Alexandru, above, a Calgary couple – Emil Radita, 60, and Rodica Radita, 54 – prayed for his recovery.

The result was that Alexandru Radita, 15, died a painful death in 2013 – and his parents, found guilty of first-degree murder, were jailed for life this week.

Justice Karen Horner found the Raditas, members of the Romanian Pentecostal Church, equally guilty of murdering 15-year-old Alexandru.

The boy, who was one of the Raditas’ eight children, weighed less than 37 pounds when he died in 2013 of complications due to untreated diabetes and starvation.

The judge said:

Mr and Mrs Radita intended to and did isolate Alex from anyone who could intervene or monitor his insulin treatment aside from themselves. Alex died as a result of bacterial sepsis brought on by extreme starvation. His physical condition at death was not a sudden or quick occurrence but rather took place over months and possibly, probably years.

Horner said by isolating Alex he was unlawfully confined and totally reliant on his parents. She said it was also clear that the Raditas knew what they were doing in denying him a sufficient amount of insulin and the long-term consequences.

The evidence underscores that the Raditas were well aware how ill Alex was and still refused to treat his medical condition with proper insulin protocol and medical care. They knew he was dying.

Sentencing the couple to life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years, the judge said:

Your actions in starving your son Alex to death are beyond comprehension. You persisted in arrogant confidence … until he was dead.

Witnesses testified that the Raditas refused to accept that their son had diabetes and failed to treat his disease until he was hospitalised near death in British Columbia in 2003.

BC social workers apprehended Alexandru after his October 2003 hospital admission and placed him in foster care – where he thrived – for nearly a year before he was returned to his family, who eventually moved to Alberta.

Patricia MacDonald, the BC social worker who fought against Alex being returned to his parents, was in court for the verdict.

I’m happy with the verdict. I think that it really is justice for Alex. He went through a horrible ending to his life and I’m glad to see his parents being held accountable.

She said of the parents:

I just feel like they’re so empty. They’re void of any kind of emotion, any kind of feeling. I’ve never met parents like them in my life.

The trial heard that the parents’ religious beliefs included not going to doctors.

The day the Alexandru died, the family went to church and said that the boy had died, but that God had resurrected him.

Said Crown prosecutor Susan Pepper:

This was a really difficult case for all involved. The facts that Justice Horner found were such that you really did see the magnitude of Alex’s suffering, how long it was and how extensive it was. Certainly the evidence that was presented in court does show that the system and the social safety net in our province and in our country did fail Alex.

Pepper said she hopes that Alex’s case eventually leads to changes in how children in care are tracked in the future.

Why do these idiots think their god created pigs, if not to produce insulin?

  2. Graham Martin-Royle says:

They are where they deserve to be, in jail. Long may they stay there.

  3. Playonwords says:

Funny how a miracle didn’t save these 2 torturers from justice

  4. Angela_K says:

They obviously didn’t pray hard enough or could it be that their god just doesn’t exist. I hope their other children are OK.

  5. AgentCormac says:

Strange how devout xtians like these two monsters constantly try to tell us that abortion is murder and a crime against life. Bloody hypocrites.

And if Alex’s case does indeed eventually lead to changes in how children in care are tracked in the future, maybe the authorities should start with assessing how deluded the parents are. With religious views being top of the list for tell-tale signs of madness.

  6. barriejohn says:

I really am lost for words, except to ask why on earth was he returned to these two monsters? No doubt they think that he is “in a better place” now, which is the way that religion perverts normal thought processes.

  7. Trump, build that Wall and bring on the heavy vetting! Make America great again by keeping these lunatics OUT of your country! Not just Islamists, but Pentecostals too, and all other fanatics. If such people break the law, revoke their citizenship and deport them. There can be no place in the USA for these truly mental fundamentalists.

  8. Trevor Blake says:

I hope the police are investigating the leaders of the church that Emil and Rodica Radita attended as accomplices to murder.

    @MFR
FFS do grow up. Or better still just shut up.

  10. 1859 says:

@MFR….Calgary is in Canada, as is British Columbia. AgentCormac made a good point.

It’s not just blind and arrogant believers (like these two monsters) whose children need protecting, but the whole notion that chidrens’ minds belong to their parents also needs examining. Children can be made, in a multitude of ways, to follow the religion of their parents – and naturally the more fundamental the parents are the less chance their children have of growing up with free and open minds. But my guess is that such a proposal – for the state to legally prohibit parents from inculcating one single religious belief into their own children – would never be accepted. Maybe, if we are not all in a state of fossilisation, by the year 2200?

  12. @1859. I seldom bother reading the articles–or I read a few lines and then give up. Perhaps I should read them more thoroughly? Titter. By the way, Canada needs its own Trump! Trudeau needs to go. And since the Left is losing the working-class vote all over the West, Canada included, this may well come to pass.

  13. Broga says:

I note that, as usual, these two sadistic sickos kept on breeding. They, and their like, are determined to fill the world with children damaged by perverted, religious indoctrination.

  14. Paul says:

This is just incredible – how do you starve a child to death like this? Let alone not provide medical care.
And in a country like Canada. Apart from the social worker the rest of the authorities ought to feel
Intense shame and remorse for Putting the little lad back into their hands to be slowly murdered.
And I don’t usually comment on people’s appreances but how well fed those two scum look. Whales.

  15. Newspaniard says:

…and I get condemned for wanting the death penalty. Nothing excuses the activities of these parents, There is no doubt that they deliberately murdered their son. After there execution there would be no smart arsed lawyer coming forward declaiming that they were innocent. String them up before they are released on parole.

  16. Edwin Salter says:

The mundane utter lack of the ‘true, good and beautiful’. It’s like looking into a void. And what will the other seven be like?

  17. Cali Ron says:

MFR: Hopefully, the vetting will prevent you from coming here, too! If this was too long for you to read I could write in bullets.

  18. John says:

My understanding is that in Romania – as in Russia – the state authorities are handing over massive amounts of cash, land and property to the official state orthodox churches.
This is designed to boost nationalism and to provide the opiate of the masses in order to keep the mass of the population in line behind the authoritarian state.
Like these poor excuses for parents, all very depressing!

  19. Cali Ron, I shall turn the other cheek.

  20. Cali Ron says:

MFR: Is that troll snark? “Turn the other cheek” on an atheist site? More evidence you are just a troll and provocateur.

  21. Cali Ron, Miss Floribunda Rose CANNOT be insulted! Calm, peaceful, gazing upon the world with true equanimity and entirely incapable of rancour, she is quite simply unable to take offence–no matter what the provocation may be.
