Atheist uses truck to highlight the sheer nastiness of the Bible

Atheist uses truck to highlight the sheer nastiness of the Bible

America probably has more vehicles than any other country in the world plastered with words exhorting folk to embrace Christianity or face eternal hellfire.

But Virginian Tom Hicks believes the same tactic can effectively be used to emphasise the hateful contents of the Bible, as the picture above shows.

Tom Hicks: ‘Right now I don’t believe there’s a God so I guess you would say I’m an atheist.’

Hicks, from Chesterfield said he painted the message on the tailgate of his truck about five years ago. The verse is drawn from the First Corinthians, and reads “Women shall be silent and submissive.”

Along with the verse, Hicks painted on three crosses, the fish symbol and the expression “Read The Bible.”

The reason I put this particular message on, I want people to read the Bible.

Hicks says that, as an atheist, he is literally driving drive home the message that the Bible itself is offensive.

It’s a hateful, hateful piece of work which Christians try to turn around and they talk about love.

Pastor Joey Anthony, of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, said:

As you look at that, you can definitely see it is completely taken out of context. Especially when you think about what the Bible says.

Jesus really did raise women to a level – where as in that culture they were seen as second class citizens – but Jesus loves all people and he raised women up to a different level, really.

There is violence in the Bible, Anthony acknowledged, but there is also love.

The very person who wrote that passage of scripture in Corinthians, also wrote in Ephesians that husbands are to love their wives just as Christ loved the church, which is an unconditional love, and it’s a sacrificial love.

Hicks said he’s never thought about taking the scripture verse off his tailgate, but he has considered highlighting different verses.

He also said he’s become accustomed to people taking pictures of his tailgate and mouthing obscenities at him.

But he also said one of the most common responses, is other drivers flipping him off.

In Bradley, Tennessee, police cars bear the slogan ‘In God we Trust’, much to the disgust of American Atheists.

Meanwhile, it is reported here that fewer than one in four Americans (24 percent) now believe the Bible is “the actual word of God, and is to be taken literally, word for word,” similar to the 26 percent who view it as:

A book of fables, legends, history and moral precepts recorded by man.

People like Pastor Anthony are living in a dream world. They are reading the Bible through the prism of 21st Century enlightenment, and making it say what they want it to say. (The Bible also fully endorses slave-ownership, but according to Christians it contains a very different message!) An article in Huffington Post claiming that Muslims are the “real feminists”, highlighted again by Jerry Coyne recently, just shows the level of self-delusion that is possible where religion is concerned. Its main arguments are well answered here:

@barriejohn. I’m always infuriated by comments from some muslim women about how they feel the wearing the veil “liberating.”They are nearly always from western countries. The solipsistic arseholes obviously care nothing for women in the Islamic world where the “choice” is between the veil and risking having acid thrown in their faces. They are incapable of understanding how their behaviour reinforces that oppression.

@andym: It’s exactly what I heard time and time again in the Brethren. The women, who are expected to remain silent in the churches (not even being allowed to teach Sunday School classes in some quarters), subject themselves to their husbands, not express opinions, bear children and look after the home, are being “liberated”. As I have said before, the clamour for “Women’s Prayer Meetings” and “Women’s Conferences” (strictly forbidden by many) shows just how “liberated” many truly feel!

Comment: “This verse use to trouble deeply as a woman, but when I studied the passage I began to see that the command to not let women teach publicly over men in the church was a form of protection. As women we tend to be emotional and vulnerable, and I think that verse was commanded by God because he understood that women can be vulnerable and thus easily deceived, so it’s not restrictive but more protective.”

“….. husbands are to love their wives just as Christ loved the church….” OH! you mean like when jesus ran off and left us high & dry, and has yet to show any real evidence that he is real!!! Ya! I know lots of women who’s husbands treated them that way!

Ah, the old “taken out context” or “it’s allegorical” defence! It amuses me the way so few Christians actually know what is written in their bible; rather than reading the book itself , they accept the interpretation from their Pastor.

I couldn’t agree more with pastor dimwit.
“As you look at that, you can definitely see it is completely taken out of context. Especially when you think about what the Bible says.”
Yes absolutely! Kill everyone else but us, annihilate everything and everyone, kill gays, people who work on Sunday’s, adulterers, have slaves, rape, torture and maim people, make them slaves to gawd etc
Yes it’s all out of context isn’t it.

I just looked at Bradley sheriff.com.
Hilarious but sheriff Watson’s web page at his ‘Community Involvement’ page lists these !
    ‘National Rifle Association
    Southern Gospel Music Association’
Further down the list is his baptist church.
Holy f***k. How is being in the NRA and a church COMMUNITY involvement ?
No wonder these people are so dangerous.
    His Personal Info has this:-
‘1998 – 2005 Eric Watson and Tennessee Harmony charted six top 80 songs across America in the Christian music charts’.

Another crazy cleric, quoting his disgusting bible, to a new standard of ongoing embarrassment: “husbands are to love their wives just as Christ loved the church, which is an unconditional love, and it’s a sacrificial love”. Is the cleric proposing husbands sacrifice their significant others? It does look like that or is it out of “context”?
