Muslim cleric engulfed in Indonesian porn scandal

Rizieq Shihab, the man who helped get Jakarta’s former governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama jailed for blasphemy, has been named by Indonesian police as as suspect in a pornography case.

According to the BBC, the hardline preacher, who heads the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) is currently in Saudi Arabia. He is alleged to habeexchanged graphic messages and nude pictures in text conversations with a woman.

Known for his fiery rhetoric, Rizieq has been jailed twice for violence and disrupting public order.

In this latest case, Mr Rizieq is accused of violating Indonesia’s strict anti-pornography laws by transmitting pornography to activist Firza Husein, who has also been named as a suspect.

Screenshots of what appeared to be text and picture messages between the two began circulating online earlier this year. Police have confirmed that the images contained in alleged WhatsApp chats between Shihab and Husein are authentic.

The BBC’s Ging Ginanjar says the case:

Is being by many as the height of hypocrisy. This is a man whose group’s core battleground has been against sexual promiscuity, prostitution and alcohol.

His group campaigned for the very laws that their leader is now being charged under, the controversial anti-pornography laws.

To his supporters, Rizieq Shihab is a hero who embodies the true face of Islam. Now he is being charged with transmitting pornographic content with a woman who is not his wife.

He faces six other charges including defaming the country’s founding principles and first president, and blasphemy against Catholicism for questioning whether Jesus was really the son of God.

Police have repeatedly summoned Rizieq for questioning since April, but he has yet to report to them. The preacher has been in Saudi Arabia with his family since late April.

An FPI spokesman told Reuters that the legal complaints were “unfounded” and “engineered to criminalise” clerics.

Rizieq’s lawyer has also said the allegations were fabricated by supporters of Mr Purnama, also known as Ahok.

He and the FPI campaigned for months last year against Mr Purnama, a Christian and ethnic Chinese, claiming that he could not lead Muslims.

When Mr Purnama addressed these claims in a speech while campaigning for Jakarta’s mayoral election, he was accused of insulting Islam, prompting even larger protests.

He was subsequently tried and found guilty of blasphemy.

It’s always those who shout the loudest.

The easiest place for a criminal to hide is in the open.
The easiest place for a perv to hide is openly in a hard line religious position.
    (Several puns intended).

“Hard line”, if you know what I mean.

A religious ‘cleric’ frothing against sex is caught with his pants down and his brain stuck at the top of his erection….no surprises there.

  5. John the Drunkard says:

Well, the Quran is pretty clear that Jesus (‘Issa’) is NOT divine, was not crucified, and was not resurrected.

You cannot BE a Muslim without being blasphemous by Catholic standards, and vice versa. So if you’re going to have blasphemy laws, you have to acknowledge that you cannot have a functioning modern state since no such state can function under the burden of 100% uniformity of religious affiliation.

  6. Dionigi says:

This shows how ridiculous blasphemy laws are. A muslim can be accused of blasphemy against christians because his religion does not recognise jesus as the son of god. therefore every muslim is a blasphemer as they do not recognise jesus as the son of gad. and every christian is a blasphemer because they do not recognise muhammed as the last prophet. Every catholic is a blasphemer because they believe transubstantiation anglicans don’t believe in speaking in tongues. Stop these delusional people from holding office, making laws and deciding how other people should live.

A Google image search for “Rizieq Shihab whatsapp” reveals the images in question.

I hope that the woman in the photos has has fled to a non-Sharia nation. She will suffer for his hypocrisy.

He protesteth too much … methinks.
Shakespear had it all worked out and had more humanity and wisdom than any cleric of any denomination you care to dredge up from the cess pit of religious doctrines

There seems to be something missing from those images. “Exchanging” implies that each sent pictures to the other, tit for tat. As it is, there’s no sign of the tat.

  10. Bart says:

All the execrable Rizieq Shihab has to do is use his get out of jail card which is to declare the woman in question as an instrument of djins. Claiming that he was led astray by an evil harlot possessed by evil spirits will secure his release.

  11. Har Davids says:

The more people are certain about their religious believes, the more they should be able to give proof of their delusions. If they fail, they should be punished in the way that pleases their God, which is death for those of the Abrahamic varieties.
