Latest London terror attack a ‘perversion of Islam’ says PM

Following last night’s terror attack in London that claimed the lives of seven and injured 48, Prime Minister Theresa May said that the terrorists had been bound to an ‘ideology that is a perversion of Islam and a perversion of the truth’.

It is an ideology that claims our Western values of freedom, democracy and human rights are incompatible with the religion of Islam. Defeating this ideology is one of the great challenges of our time but it cannot be defeated through military intervention alone.

She vowed that “enough is enough” and said that there is “far too much tolerance of extremism in our country” as she set out plans to crackdown on terror.

She said that while the Manchester Arena attack which killed 22 people, the Westminster attack in March which left four people dead and the London Bridge attack are not directly connected there is now a “new trend” in the threat the UK faces as “terrorism breeds terrorism”.

Speaking in Downing Street after chairing a meeting of the Cobra emergency committee, she said:

It will only be defeated when we turn people’s minds away from this violence and make them understand that our values, pluralistic, British values, are superior to anything offered by the preachers and supporters of hate

Our society should continue to function in accordance with our values but when it comes to taking on extremism and terrorism things need to change.

All of the major political parties have suspended national campaigning ahead of the General Election and Mrs May said campaigning will resume tomorrow with polling day on June 8 to go ahead as planned.

The Prime Minister struck a defiant tone as she said that “things need to change” in the fight against terror and that the UK “cannot and must not pretend that things can continue as they are” as she suggested that longer sentences could be introduced for terror offences and pledged to review the Government’s counter terrorism strategy.

She needs to read a book called:
“Why I am not a Muslim”. by Ibn Warraq
    .
It’s not so easy to sort out one type of Muslim from another. Islam is very simular to radical protestantism. She is thinking of it like Catholocism. There isn’t truth and heracy.only.

    I love that…’enough is enough’…so Manchester wasn’t enough???
‘Things need to change’? well a secular society would be favourite…no more faith schools, not more privilege for religion.
What a load of twaddle, like the things teachers say when they are completely out of their depth.
I fear she means a reduction in civil liberty, which is what the bastards want too, so that’s nice.

  3. Graham Martin-Royle says:

A step forward. At last politicians are admitting that these attacks are linked to islam instead of just trotting out the phrase “This is nothing to do with islam”.

  4. Angela_K says:

Same old platitudes from the woman who wants more religious schools; can’t this fool see that religion is the root of the problem. Close religious schools, removing charitable status from all churches, mosques etc. and removing any type of religious privilege would be a good start.

  5. Laura Roberts says:

Typical political pandering: pull out No True Scotsman rather than face the fact that the real perversion is religious texts themselves.

  6. Ron Cooper says:

What needs to change is the insistence by the Govt. that faith schools are valuable, they are the source of much of the trouble by segregating children and by letting the religious turn the children’s minds, and this goes for ALL religions. Look at N. Ireland for confirmation of this!
Banning religious indoctrination in all schools would go a long way to solving the problem!

  7. Club Secretary says:

    Fine words butter no parsnips

  8. L.Long says:

They are not extremists they are following their book o’BS!
There is only one way to handle any religion or dogma!!! Ignore them, make them no different than any other business! because that is exactly what they are! ALL religions (or any other dogma) are in the con business. Mae them comply with ALL laws as any other charity has to do. And NO Blasphemy laws.

  9. Bart says:

Islam has not been perverted … the murderous trio were soldiers of allah doing the work instructed in the koran. Mrs May’s stupid comment betrays what the problem is here … sopping up to muslims to secure political power. Well Mrs May, that comment might just have signalled to the electorate what we can expect from a supine apologetic government. Mind you Corbyn is not exactly making the right noises either.

  10. Smokey says:

“It is an ideology that claims our Western values of freedom, democracy and human rights are incompatible with the religion of Islam.”

It’s ironic that she wants to defeat that ideology by removing our Western values of freedom, democracy and human rights.

  11. Barry Duke says:

Apologies to all whose comments did not appear. Thanks to Angela to alerting me to the fact that something was amiss. I think the problem is sorted now.

  12. Diesel Balaam says:

Unfortunately, Theresa May, despite her misrepresentation of Islam and commitment to faith schools, remains the best and only serious option for dealing with the Islamist menace. Corbyn can’t even bring himself to utter the words “Islamist terror” let alone stand up to Muslim extremists. The Liberal Democrats are even worse, led by a soppy Christian George Formby sound-alike, who sees no problem with an “open door” immigration policy and likewise soft soaps Muslims. Secularists will just have to suck it up – Theresa May is far from perfect, but the best of a very sorry bunch.

  13. Paul says:

Why can’t these people see that religion is the problem and not the solution. There is no tolerance in religion it is divisive by it’s very nature as either someone is in the club and OK or they are not. Stating that British values are paramount and this equates to Christianity and that’s all OK, blah blah blah same old tosh, sandals, beards and cardigans is backward, idiotic and frankly insulting.

  14. RussellW says:

What else can Theresa May say? Not the truth, which is that terrorism and violence are intrinsic to Islam. She also cannot say that the Muslim community is a practically inexhaustible source of instant jihadis. People might be offended.

  15. John the Drunkard says:

If we face the evil in Islam, we’d have to recognize the evils in Christianity and Judaism. True, Islam shows its worst potential most dramatically these days. But the potential is rooted in the heart of the Abrahamic traditions. And every branch can generate a new crop of Jihadis, Dominionists, lunatic Haredis at ANY time.

  16. Trevor Blake says:

Islam is always just one more dead body away from being the religion of peace.

Theresa May talking drivel again – easily refuted ; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmWJMuC_Jx8&feature=em-uploademail

  18. Angela_K says:

This morning on Radio 4’s “Today” programme during the odious TFTD slot some Bishop was dispensing nonsensical religious platitudes and droning about his mate Jesus. And, to add further insult, they let Justin Welby spout his bullshit about world-wide prayers – where was his god eh?

  19. gedediah says:

The main issue seems to be that a higher proportion of Islamic fundies have actually read their holy books than their Christian counterparts and are just following orders.

Maybe the various religious leaders could get together and agree to edit out all the bits in their holy books that judge others and advocate violence. Oh wait, that wouldn’t leave much would it!

Angela: I was miffed yesterday morning to find that Andrew Marr’s programme had been cancelled for the atrocious “rolling news” coverage that the BBC is wedded to nowadays (and was broadcasting on the BBC News Channel in any case), but noticed that nothing was going to stand in the way of Welby’s Pentecost drivel. The trendy wendies had a female, black cleric ticking as many boxes as possible (wonder whether she is gay?), but I bet they were literally wetting themselves at the appearance of a Christian rap group, with all the usual “cat-sat-on-the-mat” poetry that we’ve come to expect (“Because of your grace we see your face; no one else can take your place…”) – gawd ‘elp us. However, according to the Archbishop Prick the service was not a “distraction” from the events in London, nor “escapism”, because we can “bring to God” all the things that trouble us (I’m not making this up), and he will make everything right again because of his great love for us. Just listen to a little of it here, and you’ll see what I mean:

The irony of all this is that at times of turmoil or disaster church attendance mysteriously rockets. Are people mad?

  21. Gui says:

“The irony of all this is that at times of turmoil or disaster church attendance mysteriously rockets. Are people mad?”

Or perhaps they see in religion the support during troublesome times, thinking in get help of a kind of superior power.

  22. Paul says:

    Gedidiah
Actually muslims do not read the Koran at all, they are made to memorise it by rote. They do this from very young ages and are simply brainwashed into regurgitating the drivel it is. About 20% or more is incomprehensible primarily because it was written in Syriac and translated into Arabic and badly so. Thereby bypassing any necessity to actually read (and understand) it.

  23. andym says:

The defence is that you can only fully appreciate it in Arabic, which appears to be a lie to cover up that, even then, large parts are incomprehensible.

  24. Laura Roberts says:

@TrevorBlake: “Islam is always just one more dead body away from being the religion of peace.” Well said!
