Beer and no hijab: hypocrisy of modesty advocate exposed

Iranian state television presenter and actress Azadeh Namdari is facing accusations of hypocrisy on social media after a video emerged showing her drinking beer and not wearing her hijab while on holiday in Switzerland.

According to the Independent, Namdari is known for her fierce insistence that Muslim women should wear the hijab. Hard-line conservative Iranian newspaper Vatan-e Emruz published a photo of her in a full hijab in 2014 under the headline: “Thank God, I wear the veil”.

The TV presenter has also been a keen proponent of the black chador – a large piece of cloth that covers women from head to toe and leaves only the face exposed. It has been extolled by conservatives for offering women the best protection.

According to the BBC, after the video went viral she offered an explanation for her bare-headedness in a video published by the hardline Young Journalists’ Club (YJC) news agency under the headline “Azadeh Namdari’s reaction to the publication of scandalous photos in cyberspace”.

This time wearing a hijab, she explained she was sitting with family members and “maharem”  – close relatives among whom a woman does not need to wear a hijab – in a park. She said her scarf fell suddenly and the video was taken at that instant by an unknown person.

She gave no explanation about drinking beer in the video.

The explanation brought further criticism from social media users, citing Namdari’s “hypocrisy” and “dual-behaviour”.

Twitter user @merry_8_4 juxtaposed an image of the TV presenter in full hijab alongside two further photos of Namdari without a hijab and while drinking beer:

What she feeds us with versus what she feeds herself with!

And user @sisil4030 tweeted:

She does not have the right to encourage people to observe the rules that she herself does not observe.

A tweet from an account attributed to the pro-government cleric Abolfazl Najafi-Tehrani read:

The problem is not #Azadeh_Namdari or people like her. The problem is the ideology, culture and the system that forces individuals in society to have dual-behaviour for some reasons.

The Facebook page Iran Without Clerics addressed Namdari in a post and wrote:

We do not have any problem with you not wearing hijab or drinking beer. Our problem is that you … take the Iranian people for a fool!

Oh, that poor thing! What are the odds that her head scarf would fall just at the very instant someone decided to capture the moment?

Hypocrisy: the bread and butter of religious conservatives.

  2. Daz says:

“Her scarf fell suddenly,” exposing the huge pair of sunglasses she had inexplicably chosen to wear underneath it.

  3. Broga says:

Religion hides behind a vast façade of supposed belief. Dig a little behind that façade, often created and sustained by supposed believers, and there is no belief there.

Many of the clergy no longer believe and those keeping their jobs often use the internet to communicate with each other. The façade in the UK is supported by the BBC which spends licence payers money to pretend that we are a nation of believers.

    The Emperor has no clothes.

But Iranian state TV is long known for accommodating hypocrites. After all, a certain J Corbyn was taking money off the state-backed station, at the same time preaching gay rights for Westerners, while the Iran’s persecution of gays was well-known.

I suppose the beer bottle jumped into her hand at the same time as her scarf fell off. What a terrible day she was having!

  6. Broga says:

@barriejohn: We see here the same hypocrisy as that of the priest who fulminates against gays in the pulpit while sexually abusing alter boys.

  7. L.Long says:

She is religious! That alone makes her a hypocrite and liar!

  8. John the Drunkard says:

I wonder if she’ll be in physical danger now that her unveiled head has been revealed?

But then, how many rapist priests have been assaulted by outraged parents?

  9. Har Davids says:

And what was she doing in Europe, land of the Infidel, while she could have visited another devout Muslim country. Less chance of a beer-bottle accident.

  10. StephenJP says:

Her scarf must have “fallen off” pretty dramatically, because there’s no sign of it anywhere else in the photo. She’s showing a bit of neck and wrist as well. Now then, what happens when she goes home? And who is the fat bloke sitting behind (or in?) the baby’s buggy? I think we should be told.

  11. 1859 says:

Personally I can see what all the fuss is about – that ‘beer’ bottle pose shows she knows exactly how to perform oral sex – shameless! Her headscarf, of course, has fallen dramatically to the floor because her partner has been writhing about in sexual ecstasy. And she’s wearing the sunnies as a last act of modesty, because when she looks at herself in the mirror she won’t be able to stop the word ‘hypocrite’ from ricocheting around her mind.

  12. Paul says:

I don’t get it why she needs to say she doesn’t wear the hijab outside of Iran. It isn’t standard dress in a pub.

  13. barriejohn says:

Paul: Women not wearing the hijab in Europe are routinely raped, as everyone knows. Never happens in Muslim countries, of course:

Some 20 people from Multan, Pakistan, have been arrested for ordering the rape of a teenage girl, in revenge for a rape her brother allegedly committed.

Police said the families of the two girls are related.

Members of both had joined forces to decide what should be done.

“A jirga [village council] had ordered the rape of a 16-year-old girl as punishment, as her brother had raped a 12-year-old,” police official Allah Baksh told AFP.

    Give me strength!
