US evangelist denies ‘pay up or face God’s wrath’ warning

A number of media reports this week revealed that televangelist and Chair of Donald Trump’s Evangelical Advisory Board was urging people to donate up to a month’s salary to ‘God’ via her her church’s First Fruits campaign – and that those who did not cough up at least something could face dire consequences.

On her Paula White Ministries website, White – whose net worth is $5-million – wrote:

All Firsts belong to God. When you honor this principle it provides the foundation and structure for God’s blessings and promises in your life, it unlocks deep dimensions of spiritual truths that literally transform your life! When you apply this everything comes in divine alignment for His plan and promises for you.

Ominously, she added:

When you don’t honor it, whether through ignorance or direct disobedience there are consequences.

This threat put her in the direct line of fire from folk – many of them Christians – who despise her money-grubbing tactics.

Today, it was reported by Christian Post that a spokesperson for Paula White released this statement:

Pastor Paula White’s comments were originally reported out of their full context. She was actually speaking of her personal, longtime commitment to ‘put God first at the beginning of a new year’ and as part of that commitment she has often donated her entire January salary to charity in gratitude to God for his blessings.

She encouraged others to also be generous but she does not – and did not – suggest that other people must donate a month’s salary to her or her church or face divine punishment. Charity is at the heart of Christianity as it is at the heart of every religious tradition in the world, and anyone who has listened to White’s teaching within its proper context should come to this conclusion as well.

Here’s what she says about “GOD’S PRINCIPLE OF FIRST FRUITS”:

Each January, I put God first and honor Him with the first of our substance by sowing a first fruits offering of one month’s pay. That is a big sacrifice, but it is a seed for the harvest I am believing for in the coming year. And God always provides! Every year many others join us and sow a month’s pay, a week’s pay, others give a day’s pay, but everyone gives their best — The results are miraculous! First Fruits has impacted my life personally and the lives of countless others! But First Fruits is more than just an offering… it’s a principle.

Writing for The Friendly Atheist, David G McAfee asked:

Who exactly is Paula White giving money to? Her own bank account? Since every link on that website goes directly to her donation page, we can safely assume she is sending the money to … her own ministry. That means it’s not a ‘big sacrifice’ at all. It also brings new meaning to ‘God always provides!’

‘First Fruits has impacted my life personally…’
Of course it has – that’s why you’re worth $5million, Paula!

BTW, in light of his ‘Access Hollywood’ tape, isn’t it a bit creepy the way that Trump has his hand around her?

One other thing. Apparently when Andy Savage, a pastor at a Memphis evangelical mega-church, admitted to his congregation that he had been involved in a ‘past sexual incident’ with a teen, the 2,000+ worshipers gave him a 20-second standing ovation! Just how fucked up must you have to be to support charlatans like him and Paula White?

The criminals, thieves and hypocrites have now taken over. All they needed was the patina of religion. Shouldn’t the apparently less blatantly criminal – Christian politicians, Archbishops, cardinals – be exposing them?

  3. barriejohn says:

How can she deny it? If she says that “God will bless you” when people make donations to her “ministry”, then the corollary is that if they DON’T donate, God WON’T bless them. She can’t be saying: “If you donate God will bless you; and if you don’t donate God will bless you”!

Religion is just a business and therefore should be paying their taxes.

Your gawd can piss off! You need money? PRAY!!! A LOT!!!
then when money puff out of thin air, you will know gawd is blessing you!

Tithing – nothing new. Started with a tithe-barn near you. slightly ameliorated, I suppose, as it’s only 1/12 not the original 1/10. Progress?

Tragic how this all powerful god always needs money, you’d expect him/her/it to do the loaves and fishes magic trick like his son did – allegedly.

Of course Ms. White doesn’t actually believe any of the bullshit she peddles. She is doubtless terrified of the consequences of confessing her unbelief.

    The average American is stupid.
    Evidence:-
    a) They elected Trump.
    b) They get suckered everyday by brazen lying guttersnipe shitehawk evangelical con artists.
    c) The Evangelists are not taxed on their ill gotten gains.
I don’t have time or energy to rattle off the rest of the evidence.

Farmer Giles: In all fairness, the majority of Americans did NOT vote for Trump, and many are horrified by what is happening to their country!

Trump is spending to much time under his sun lamp. He looks broiled.

@Broga, going back to your earlier comment, the revealing thing is how far the faithful stick together, whatever their faith. Sure, you will get the lunatic fringe of all sects fulminating against everybody else; but most of the rest of them are far more willing to overlook their mutual differences than admit that any of them have problems, or even that they might be wrong about anything.

For instance, I have never heard a mainstream CofE pundit utter a word of criticism about the RCC, even given their dreadful record of child abuse. And the CofE themselves have, disgracefully, been eager to crawl up the backside of the Russian Orthodox church, despite the blood on their hands through their support for Putin’s corrupt regime.

The churches, synagogues and mosques in this country prefer to huddle together to defend the principle of faith rather than give an inch to reason and evidence. It is all jolly frustrating.

Farmer Giles : Good thing I’m not an “average” American or I might take offense to your generalization. For what it’s worth less than half of registered voters bothered to vote and over half of them didn’t vote for Trump so in reality less than 1/4 of registered voters voted for Trump. I haven’t even included the adult Americans who aren’t registered so less than about 20% of adult Americans voted for Trump. Conclusion : voter apathy played at least as big of a factor in his election as his faithful, foolish followers, so we aren’t as stupid as we are lazy.

You americans ended up with two of the worst imaginable candidates…
The lying opportunistic wife of an adulterous lying ex president and Trump. How could you get into such a mess if it was not for a system run by big bucks corporations, cartels of mega rich and powerful religious lobbying. You got what you deserve. Reap what you sowed and weep. But it was said that there are thousands of other Americans who could do a great job as president. You just need to fix the system. And quick.

It’s because they have a common powerful, actually unstoppable and correct, enemy for which they have no defence.
