The trouble with identity politics; religion in schools; and more –
Freethought update, 9-22 July

Dear reader,

In this issue, I interview Pragna Patel, former director of Southall Black Sisters and a long-term advocate for the rights of women in minority communities. Pragna considers how far authoritarianism plagues both left-wing and right-wing politics at the moment, why it needs to be resisted, and the trouble with identity politics.

Russell Sandberg, Professor of Law at Cardiff, analyses a recent case on religious education and collective worship in the High Court of Northern Ireland. He argues that its interpretation of the European Convention on Human Rights means that schools in England and Wales may well be in breach of their students' human rights, as a result of the inconsistent and un-secular legislation currently in force.

Finally, our earnest correspondent, Modus Tollens, reports on a truly staggering scientific discovery and its ground-breaking applications.
