Islam and freethought; Hitchens and Paine; secularism; Sumption

Dear reader,

Welcome to our first newsletter of 2023. This month we examine the relationship between Islam, freethought and liberalism. Kunwar Khuldune Shahid argues that the flourishing of freethought in the Muslim world is necessary for progress. Niko Alm considers how far Islam is a political ideology as well as a religion, and why it is time for liberal Muslims to speak out.

There are two articles on historical themes. Daniel Sharp, who is writing a biography of Christopher Hitchens, looks at his relationship to Thomas Paine. Bob Forder examines the relationship between freethought and secularism through the ideas of Chapman Cohen, former editor of the Freethinker.

Finally, we have the second half of my interview with Jonathan Sumption, reflecting on his legal career, being a judge in Hong Kong, Brexit, and history. And a round-up of the six most controversial topics we covered in 2022.
