| Freethought for the week – special issueDear reader,

This week we interrupt our usual schedule to bring you a special report on the war in Ukraine. I interviewed a resident of Kyiv, Andrii Nehrych, who has remained in the city throughout the Russian invasion. He told me about what life has been like since the first missiles started falling, and shared some striking photos of the city during the conflict.

This week's image is of a painting of Charles Bradlaugh's study made by Walter Sickert not long after Bradlaugh's death. It is accompanied by a brief discussion of Sickert's relationship to freethought, and of how the painting of the study conveys the personality of the man who has just left it.

 New this week
 - A view from Kyiv: ordinary life during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine – special interview
 - Image of the week: Charles Bradlaugh’s study after his death, by Walter Sickert

 Coming up later in March
 - Kunwar Khuldune Shahid on threats to freethought in South Asia
 - Further update on Mubarak Bala
 ...and more.

I'll be writing again next week. As always, if you like what we do, please spread the word, and let us know if you have any questions or comments.

 Best wishes,
