Helen Joyce; Edward Royle; Freethought Today; Cremation

Dear reader,

Our latest articles explore secularism, freethought and open enquiry.

Delving once more into difficult subjects, we have an interview with Helen Joyce on the harms that can arguably arise when society fails to distinguish between biological sex and gender.

Edward Royle, distinguished historian of 19th-century freethought, discusses the lives of the two founders of British secularism, George Holyoake and Charles Bradlaugh, and their legacies.

I was recently interviewed by Liberas, the Belgian institute for freethought and liberalism, about the place of freethought in the 21st century.

And the historian Carolin Kosuch looks at the modern origins of cremation in 19th-century Italy and Germany – a secularist heritage to be proud of.
