Steven Nadler is Vilas Research Professor and the William H. Hay II Professor of Philosophy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a noted expert on the life and work of the great philosopher Baruch Spinoza. His most recent book is Spinoza, Atheist, in which he argues that, contrary to most academics’ interpretation of Spinoza as some kind of theist, pan- or otherwise, Spinoza was, in fact, a full-blooded nonbeliever—and that it is only in this light that Spinoza’s philosophy can be properly understood.
